The Salem FFA Chapter took First Place in the South Central District Grassland Management Contest in Rolla on October 14th. The FFA Team was comprised of Cody Lough, Lane Howard, Ashley Greenshields and Nick Weslak. The High Individual Award went to Cody Lough, the Second High Individual Award went to Ashley Greenshields and Third High Individual Award was presented to Lane Howard. The Salem 4-H Team comprised of Alyvia Toman, Ryan Blaylock, Eddie Fleetwood and Wes Tatom took fifth overall, but First Place in the 4-H Division of the contest. Alyvia Toman was the High Individual in the 4-H Division. Both teams will compete at the State Contest to be held October 28th at Ashland. Congratulations teams!!!

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving possession of marijuana, theft, and vandalism. On Monday, October 11th at 2:31 p.m. an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to a student who was in possession of drugs. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 16-year old male juvenile of Salem for possession of marijuana. He was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. Later that afternoon at 3:15 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a phone that was taken from a purse at the Salem High School. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of an 18-year old male of Salem for stealing. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Wednesday, October 13th at 7:37 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Personal Touch Cleaners in reference to vandalism. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke a window valued at $300. Please contact the Salem Police Department at (573) 729-4242 if you have any information regarding the vandalism, which is still under investigation.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers starting at 7:00. After the roll call and approval of the consent agenda, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will discuss the current existing pole agreements and franchise fees. The President of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Sean Curley, will report on the Planning and Zoning meeting held prior to the board meeting in which a special use permit at South MacArthur for an in-home counseling business. Mayor Gary Brown will give the Director of Public Works report on the Sho-Me power rates for 2011 and recycling. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present Resolution NO. 3-2010, which is required for the grant the City received through the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District for another recycling trailer and recycle bins. In new business, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will present an application from Bigos Restaurant for a liquor license for approval, as they have met all City and State requirements. After the bills are approved, the meeting will adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The World Health Organization and EPA have identified radon gas as the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. To address this epidemic, National Radon Awareness Week has been announced for this week, October 17th to October 24th. Radon is a problem in nearly twenty percent of the homes in many areas of the United States and claimed the lives of approximately 20,000 Americans in 2009. The Owensville Dutchmen scored two 4th quarter touchdowns in less than two minutes as they came back from a 17-14 deficit to beat the Salem Tigers Friday night, 28-17. Salem had touchdowns from Ben Adams and Kevin Presley, and Presley added a 30-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter, but the Tigers fall to 5-3 on the year and 0-1 in District play. They will travel to St. James Friday night to face the Tigers.

Blaine Gabbert threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns, leading 21st-ranked Missouri to a 30-9 rout of Texas A&M at Kyle Field. Gabbert completed 31-of-47 passes without an interception and Wes Kemp hauled in 10 of those throws for 89 yards with a pair of scores. T.J. Moe added six catches for 110 yards and touchdown for the Tigers (6-0, 2-0 Big 12), who played their first true road game of the season. Missouri will host Oklahoma in their Homecoming game this Saturday.

Steven Jackson rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown, and iced the game with some clutch running late in the fourth quarter, as the St. Louis Rams held on for a 20-17 win over the San Diego Chargers at the Edward Jones Dome. Sam Bradford managed the game well, throwing for 198 yards and a score on 18- of-31 efficiency for the Rams (3-3). St. Louis has won three of it last four.

Matt Schaub threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Andre Johnson with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Houston Texans to a 35-31 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Reliant Stadium. Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel converted 20-of-29 throws for 201 yards and three touchdowns, two of them going to Dwayne Bowe. Thomas Jones had 100 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown for the Chiefs who are 3-2. Jamaal Charles had 16 carries for 93 yards.

Loui Eriksson netted the equalizer in the second period and had a no-goal call reversed in the shootout, helping the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues Saturday night at American Airlines Center. Patrik Berglund and Andy McDonald scored for St. Louis, which has dropped two in a row. Ty Conklin made 23 stops. The Blues will try to get back on the winning track tonight when they travel to Chicago to face the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Game time is set for 7:30 and you can hear the contest on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Dale E. Casey Belflower of Rolla, age 99, will be held at this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral services for Joe Bobbitt of Cherryville, age 79, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cherryville Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services for Dorothy Richardson of Columbia, formerly of Steelville, age 72, will be held Tuesday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice.

Funeral services for James Ottis Devall of Salem, age 84 will be at 1:00 Thursday, October 21st at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery with full military honors. 

Memorial services for Anne Rutledge of Salem, age 71, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Salem Christian Church. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
