The Salem FFA Chapter took First Place in the South Central District Grassland Management Contest in Rolla on October 14^th. The FFA Team was comprised of Cody Lough, Lane Howard, Ashley Greenshields and Nick Weslak. The High Individual Award went to Cody Lough, the Second High Individual Award went to Ashley Greenshields and Third High Individual Award was presented to Lane Howard. The Salem 4-H Team comprised of Alyvia Toman, Ryan Blaylock, Eddie Fleetwood and Wes Tatom took fifth overall, but First Place in the 4-H Division of the contest. Alyvia Toman was the High Individual in the 4-H Division. Both teams will compete at the State Contest to be held October 28^th at Ashland. Congratulations teams!!!

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving possession of marijuana, theft, and vandalism. On Monday, October 11^th at 2:31 p.m. an officer was detailed to the Salem High School in reference to a student who was in possession of drugs. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 16-year old male juvenile of Salem for possession of marijuana. He was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. Later that afternoon at 3:15 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a phone that was taken from a purse at the Salem High School. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of an 18-year old male of Salem for stealing. He was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Wednesday, October 13^th at 7:37 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Personal Touch Cleaners in reference to vandalism. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke a window valued at $300. The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers starting at 7:00. After the roll call and approval of the consent agenda, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will discuss the current existing pole agreements and franchise fees. The President of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Sean Curley, will report on the Planning and Zoning meeting held prior to the board meeting in which a special use permit at South MacArthur for an in-home counseling business. Mayor Gary Brown will give the Director of Public Works report on the Sho-Me power rates for 2011 and recycling. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present Resolution NO. 3-2010, which is required for the grant the City received through the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District for another recycling trailer and recycle bins. In new business, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will present an application from Bigos Restaurant for a liquor license for approval, as they have met all City and State requirements. After the bills are approved, the meeting will adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The World Health Organization and EPA have identified radon gas as the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. To address this epidemic, National Radon Awareness Week has been announced for this week, October 17^th to October 24^th. Radon is a problem in nearly twenty percent of the homes in many areas of the United States and claimed the lives of approximately 20,000 Americans in 2009.
