An accident occurred at 4:55 early Wednesday morning in Dent County on Highway C about two miles west of Highway 72. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Volkswagen Beetle was traveling west on Highway C when it ran off the right side of the roadway, traveled through the ditch, and then struck an embankment. The driver then fled the crash scene and has not yet been identified. A passenger, 19-year old Kelsey Scott of Rolla, suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial Hospital by the Salem ambulance. Scott was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Volkswagen sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.
A couple of accidents occurred in Phelps County early Wednesday morning. The first accident happened at 3:05 on Highway BB about two miles west of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, 25-year old Phillip Sledge of Rolla was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado south when he ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, and ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle then struck a fence and overturned. Sledge suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center then transferred to the University Medical Center in Columbia. The Chevrolet Silverado sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing. The second accident occurred at 3:10 on Highway CC about four miles west of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, 29-year old Robert Garn of Lecoma was driving a 1997 Ford Ranger east when he traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, struck a tree, and then overturned. Garn suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center then airlifted to the University Medical Center in Columbia. An occupant, 23-year old Rachel Warren of Rolla, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the University Medical Center in Columbia. Neither were wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Ranger was totaled and removed from the scene by C&C Towing.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their October meeting tonight at the boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal will update the Board on the September membership count, facilities and the MSBA/MASA Annual Conference. In new business the Principals from each building will give updated reports on happenings at their respective buildings and the Board will address resignations. In old business the Board will consider bids on surplus property. The Board will then adjourn the regular meeting and go into executive session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The October meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.
The MU Extension will offer a free evening program that will help you interpret your soil and hay test results, as well as learn how you can use this information to make your enterprise more profitable. Flu shots are now available at the Dent County Health Center on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday.The cost is $25. The Health Center will bill Medicare and Medicaid but you must bring your card. The Center for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot for all those 6 months and older. The Health Center is located at 601 S. MacArthur here in Salem.
