Come to the Missouri Mines State Historic Site in Park Hills on Saturday, October 20th for an autumn evening of family fun and education. The event, which is sponsored by Missouri State Parks and The Doe Run Co., will run from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and is free to the public. The entire family will enjoy games and activities relating to mining, mineral resources, and recreational safety. Admission to the site’s museum will be free and refreshments will be offered. Missouri Mines State Historic Site preserves and interprets the important buildings and structural elements of the former St. Joe Mineral Corp.’s largest mine-mill complex. The site’s museum features restored underground mining equipment, a large display of mineral specimens, exhibits on mining history and a short video on lead mining and the milling process. The site is located on the south side of Highway 32 at the Flat River Drive overpass in Park Hills. Each year the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) honors residents of the Meramec Region who give to their communities by volunteering their time, talents and support. This year a total of 12 volunteers, including two youths, and one non-profit organization will be honored at the 2012 MRPC Annual Dinner celebration on November 8th at Hermann Hill Village in Hermann. No one from Dent County is being recognized among the 12 nominees this year. The Eugene E. Northern award, the highest honor given by MRPC for volunteerism and community service, will be announced at the Annual Dinner. The public is invited to attend the event. The City of Hermann and Hermann Hill Village are serving as hosts. The City of Hermann and the Hermann Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a reception held prior to the dinner. The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. and will include a silent auction and exhibits. The Annual Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a program and awards presentation to follow. The cost of the event is $25, and reservations may be made by calling the MRPC at 573-265-2993.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will continue to perform roadway maintenance on Route DD in Dent County between Route H and the end of state maintenance through Tuesday, October 23rd. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area. Weather conditions may cause postponements in the work schedule. An accident occurred at 7:40 Monday evening in Reynolds County on Route KK about a mile and a half northeast of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Saturn Vue driven by 38-year old Jason Kanouse of Steelville was traveling northbound on Route KK, crossed over the center line, and struck a 2004 Chevrolet Truck driven by 23-year old Joseph Gant of Bunker and then continued southbound impacting a ditch and overturned. Gant suffered moderate injuries but refused medical treatment at the scene. The EMS then responded to transport Gant to the Advanced Health Care in Ellington. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Saturn Vue was totaled and removed from the scene by Hills Body Shop in Ellington. The Chevrolet truck was released at the scene.
Admirers of the wild turkey in Missouri have cause for celebration for the second year in a row, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). Each summer, citizen volunteers and MDC staff record the number of wild turkey hens and recently hatched turkeys they see. This year’s wild-turkey brood survey showed strong reproduction, bolstering gains posted last year. Resource Scientist Jason Isabelle, MDC’s turkey program leader, divides the number of young turkeys, called poults, by the number of hens. The resulting poult-to-hen ratio is a good measure of turkey nest success and poult survival. From 2007 through 2010, the statewide poult-to-hen ratio ranged from 1.0 to 1.2. This year’s survey showed a ratio of 1.7, the same as in 2011 and up 42 percent from the average over the past five years. This year’s poult-to-hen ratio exceeded the five-year average in all nine of Missouri’s turkey-production regions. The eastern Ozarks had the highest number, with 2.5 poults per hen. The Mississippi Lowlands in southeastern Missouri was not far behind with 2.2 poults per hen. Poult-to-hen ratios ranged from 1.5 to 1.7 throughout the rest of the state. The 2011 and 2012 brood survey numbers are dramatic improvements from 2007 through 2010, when the ratio ranged from 1.0 to 1.2 poults per hen. Approximately 15,000 hunters buy firearms turkey hunting permits each fall, compared with spring permit sales of more than 100,000. The hunters who pursue turkeys in the fall often have the woods to themselves. Hunters harvested 7,077 turkeys during MO’s 2011 fall firearms turkey season.
The Salem Police Department has released a couple theft reports. On Tuesday, October 2nd at 1:59 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a ladies Cardinal’s wallet and contents valued at $17.26 from a white 2012 Ford Focus parked at the Salem City Park. On Wednesday, October 10th at 12:36 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted in reference to a stolen license plate. That investigation revealed that someone took a Missouri license plate, bracket, and frame valued at $25 from a gold 2007 Dodge truck. The Dent County Health Center has flu shots available. The shots are available on a walk-in basis. The price of the flu vaccination is $25. The Health Center will bill Medicaid and Medicare, but you must bring your card. The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team finished up a rough regular season on Tuesday, losing to Mountain View in two sets, 25-11 and 25-13. Salem has two wins on the year and will play Owensville in the first round of their District Tournament in Union on Monday.
Game Three of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants will be held this afternoon. Kyle Lohse will take the mound to pitch against Matt Cain as the series is tied 1-1. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio at 2:30.

Funeral services for Myrtle Tyree of Owensville, age 93, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from noon until time of service at the church.
