Twelve local volunteers, including three youth, and one non-profit organization from the Meramec Region will be honored for community service efforts on Thursday, November 10^th, during Meramec Regional Planning Commission’s 2011 Annual Dinner celebration at the Knights of Columbus’ Visitation Hall in Vienna. Those locally to be recognized by MRPC for community contributions and volunteer efforts include: Anne Springer of Bourbon, nominated by Mary Heywood the MRPC treasurer; Matt Bramel of Doolittle, nominated by Paul Smith an MRPC board member; Nick Barrack of Rolla, nominated by Laura Antolak an MRPC board member, and Jacob Kettner, a Salem youth, nominated by Donald Dodd an MRPC at-large representative for transportation and James Coffman, nominated by Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles. The Eugene E. Northern award, the highest honor given by MRPC for volunteerism and community service, will also be named at the dinner. The public is invited to attend the event. Hosts are Maries County and the city of Vienna. Maries County Bank is sponsoring the reception. The Annual Dinner will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a reception from 5:00 to 6:30,featuring a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, bar and exhibits. Entertainment for the evening will feature Harold Rowden & Friends, a group of Maries County bluegrass musicians. Dinner will be from 6:30 to 7:30 and will be prepared by the Vienna Knights of Columbus. The program and awards presentation will follow the dinner and is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Cost of the event is $25 per person. Reservations can be made by calling the MRPC at (573) 265-2993.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of September. During the month, they wrote 11 equipment repair orders, 22 summons to appear in court, 21 warning tickets, and 14 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 19 accidents, seven assaults, one burglary, four reports of disorderly conduct, three reports of domestic assault, two reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, two reports of forgery, one report of fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, five fugitive warrants and one two reports of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a missing/runaway juvenile, 13 reports of property damage, 14 reports of stealing, one report of tampering, and one report of trespassing. The police department received 1,813 calls for service during the month, handled 123 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 110 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 15 hours in court testifying, and three hours as court bailiff. The calls in September included 44 calls for escorts, five calls for an intoxicated driver, three calls for a prowler, seven calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, four intoxicated pedestrian calls, six calls for domestic disputes, four calls for a wrecker, 15 911 calls, four calls for a peace disturbance, 12 calls for alarms sounding, 13 calls for fights in progress, eight ambulance assist calls, and six calls for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 10,548 miles and arrested 20 males and 10 females during the month of September.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the roadwork that will take place in our area this week. In Dent County, partial surface overlay will take place on Route BB between Route K and the end of state maintenance today and Tuesday. In Crawford County, concrete replacement will take place in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 44 at mile marker 205. This will start Tuesday and work will continue until Thursday. Roadway resurfacing in the westbound lanes of Interstate 44 between Route H and the Phelps County line will also continue through early December in the overnight hours. In Phelps County, partial surface overlay will take place on Interstate 44 south outer road at the mile marker 176 exit today and Tuesday, and then on Interstate 44 north outer road from the mile marker 176 exit to the end of state maintenance on Wednesday and Thursday. During each of these projects, one lane will be open and crews will flag traffic through the work area.

October 17^th through October 24^th is Federal Radon Action Week according to Surgeon General. Health agencies throughout the United States have joined forces to promote awareness of the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers. The American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control, and the National Cancer Institute all agree that radon is a National health problem and encourage radon testing during the October awareness drive. Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible and odorless radioactive gas. It caused more American fatalities last year than carbon monoxide, fires, and handguns combined. If a home has not been tested for radon in the past two years, contact your state radon office for information on locating qualified test kits or qualified radon testers. Owensville scored with 15 seconds left in the game to defeat the Salem Tigers, 27-21 Friday night. Sammy Ibrahim had 142 yard and a score for Salem, which falls to 4-4 on the year and 0-1 in Districts. Junior Rictor added two rushing touchdowns. The Tigers will continue District play Friday night, as they will host St. James.

The Salem Lady Tiger volleyball team will be in Plato today with the JV starting at 6:00. 

With a chance to secure a berth in the World Series, St. Louis didn't waste any time as the Cardinals scored nine runs in the first three innings Sunday to beat Milwaukee, 12-6, in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series and win their first pennant in five years. David Freese smacked a three-run homer in the first inning, Rafael Furcal added a solo shot in the second, and Albert Pujols homered during a four-run third. Freese finished with three hits for St. Louis, which chased Brewers starter Shaun Marcum after one inning. The Cardinals face the AL-champion Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the Fall Classic on Wednesday.

St. Louis Cardinal outfielder Lance Berkman has been named the 2011 National League Comeback Player of the Year.

Bobby Ryan scored twice and added an assist on Francois Beauchemin's goal, which ignited a string of three straight third-period goals that lifted the Ducks over the Blues, 4-2. Patrik Berglund and Alexander Steen scored for St. Louis, which received 19 saves from Jaroslav Halak. The Blues play in L.A. Tuesday.

James Franklin accounted for five touchdowns to lead Missouri over Iowa State, 52-17 in Big 12 action at Faurot Field. Franklin completed 20-of-28 for 289 yards with three passing touchdowns and ran for 84 yards with two rushing touchdowns for Missouri (3-3, 1-2 Big 12). Mizzou will host Oklahoma State Saturday.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 310 yards and three first-half touchdowns as Green Bay continued its superb start to the 2011 season with a 24-3 decision over St. Louis at Lambeau Field. Sam Bradford completed 28-of-44 passes for 321 yards and one interception as the Rams (0-5) opened up a campaign with five straight losses for the second time in three years. Steven Jackson had 96 yards on 18 carries. The Rams play the Dallas Cowboys Sunday.

Funeral services for Robert Garland Douglas of Salem, age 82, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem. Memorials may be made to the family.

Memorial service for Edith H. Lutzen of Rolla, age 89, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran School Tuition Assistance Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
