The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5020, 6040 and 6220 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5630. Simpson also said that material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 5450, 5460 and 5480. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2020, 2030, 3300, 3310 and 3180; and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 3150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended an Ozark Riverways Solid Waste Management meeting on Tuesday and a Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee meeting yesterday afternoon in St. James. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that October 29^th is the last day to request a mail out absentee ballot, and Monday, November 3^rd is the last day to absentee vote in the clerk’s office for the November General Election. Curley also wanted to let everyone know that the clerk’s office will be open Saturday, November 1^st from 8:00 am to noon for anyone who would like to absentee vote. Also at the meeting, Commissioner Simpson read a letter from the Sheriff’s Department requesting that the county help pay for a generator that the department needs. The bid for the generator was through MRPC and was awarded to A+ Electric for $14,565. The Sheriff’s Department received a grant for $10,000 and has $2,000 they can use from the Restitution Fund, leaving a balance of $2,565 and all three commissioners agreed to pay the remaining balance out of the General Revenue Fund. The Commission also agreed to accept the bid from Century Signs of $760 for the sign that will be placed at Salem TCRC for rural addressing. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report involving a burglary attempt. On Thursday, October 16^th at 12:39 in the morning, the Dent County Sheriff's Office received a report of an alarm sounding at the Anutt Country Store. An entry attempt was made to the back door of the building. A window had been broken and partially pried away from the doorframe. Upon responding, deputies noted a vehicle coming from Route C and entering 72 Highway. One of the responding officers stopped the vehicle for investigative purposes. Evidence was collected from the vehicle and the store building in regards to the incident. Investigation led to a 22-year old male and a 20-year old male being taken into custody with charges being sought for Burglary Attempt in the 2^nd degree  and for Non-Residence and Property Damage in the 2^nd degree.

The Salem R-80 District discussed their latest audit report Thursday night at their regular meeting. R-80 is required by law to have an audit every other year, but R-80 has opted to have their audit done every year. Matt James from Willow Springs addressed the R-80 2007/2008 audit report and reported that everything went well. R-80 uses a cash basis of accounting system for their audits. The assessed valuation for this year was $63.5 million, which is up from last years $59.5 million. There was one State Finding reported and that was on June 30th of this year, the school had money deposited at the bank and there was $5,800 that was uncollateralized above the FDIC limit. There were three Federal Findings that were reported: one was the segregation of duties, which is more than just one or two people doing all the bookwork; the second was that the auditor reported that he does the financial statements as well as the audit and it would be best per the Federal guidelines that an internal auditor such as a CPA do one and someone else the other was recommended; and thirdly it is now required to have a risk management program implemented for better control of cash and payment of bills. The board accepted the audit report and findings.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers dropped their final home match of the season, losing to Mountain Grove in two straight games, 25-13 and 25-12. Salem will particpate in the Grand Slam Tournament this weekend before traveling to Ava next Tuesday to end the regular season.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers are seeded 5^th in district play this year which will be held at the Union High School Gym. Salem will face Sullivan in the first round on Monday, October 27^th at 5:30. The winner of the Salem-Sullivan matchup will face St. Francis Borgia Tuesday at 5:30.

The Salem Football Tigers district play begins tonight against the Owensville Dutchmen at Owensville. Salem enters the game with a 6-1 record. You can hear the game tonight on KSMO radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com starting at 6:20 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt.

Brad Boyes recorded a goal and an assist and Manny Legace made 29 saves to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 6-1 thrashing of the Dallas Stars at Scottrade Center. Eric Brewer, Keith Tkachuk, Yan Stastny, Steve Wagner and Jay McKee each tallied for St. Louis, which has won three of four to start the season and scored at least five goals in each of the three wins. The scoring output is a change from last season's Blues team that tallied just 2.5 goals per game. Legace was especially effective in the final two periods, stopping 22-of-22 shots for St. Louis.

The Missouri Tigers will face Texas tomorrow night as they face the Texas Longhorns at Texas. Missouri dropped to 11^th in the nation after losing to Oklahoma State last week. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:00 with the pre-game show.

The Tampa Bay Rays will have to wait if they are to win the American League pennant, as the Boston Red Sox staved off playoff elimination by erasing a seven-run deficit in a miraculous 8-7 win over Tampa Bay in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. J.D. Drew hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning, while David Ortiz belted a three-run home run for the Red Sox, who scored eight times in the last three innings to send the series back to St. Petersburg. The Rays still lead the series, three games to two.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson will miss Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans. Chief’s head coach Herm Edwards said Johnson broke team rules and that he will return for the October 26 game against the New York Jets. Johnson, earlier this week, was charged with simple assault. He has run for 417 yards and three touchdowns this season for the 1-4 Chiefs. That includes a 198-yard, two-TD performance in their lone win of the season, 33-19, over Denver on September 28.
