The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, property damage and a shoplifter. On October 4^th at 3:56 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that person(s) unknown entered a 2000 Saturn parked at the Salem High School and took a silver Motorola cell phone valued at $200. On October 5^th at 10:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took approximately $100 in quarters from a soda machine. On October 10^th at 12:10 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 1100 block of West Hunt in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown damaged a blue 1997 Chevrolet Beretta and a maroon 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck by scratching the paint. The value of the damage is unknown at this time. At 6:33 that evening, an officer was detailed to the Dollar General Store in reference to a shoplifter. The report led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male for stealing $14.00 in merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done in the Current Township on Dent County Roads 652, 661 and 662.  Simpson also said that grading would be done on Dent County Road 408 and gravel would be hauled to Dent County Road 601. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that conditions are too dry for grading, so crew members would be bush hogging on Dent County Roads 216, 253, 259, and 259A. Tune also said that crew members would be putting up road signs and hauling gravel to the crusher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting Thursday in St. James. At the meeting, members rated bridge and highway issues in this area that need to be addressed, and those issues will be taken to Jefferson City on November 19^th and be presented to State Legislatures and MODOT. Representatives from the City of Rolla also attended that meeting to discuss the possibility of adding to the priority list, a Highway 63 west by-pass around Rolla from Interstate 44.  Members of the committee said that if the City of Rolla could find an alternative source of funding other than MODOT, the idea would be added to the list. Skiles also said that the straightening of curves on Highway 32 West from Salem to Licking is under contract for the year 2009. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that bids for propane for the courthouse would opened at 10:00. Herman Vance, a representative from the Disabled Citizens Alliance for this area, attended the meeting to discuss with the Commission the handicap accessibility of the courthouse and judicial building. He said that in order for the courthouse to be within state statutes, an elevator would need to be installed to make the second floor courtroom accessible and the restroom needs to have a five-foot turning radius for wheelchairs. Commissioner Tune said that when the issue of handicap accessibility to the second floor courtroom does arise, the courtroom in the Judicial Building is used, because it is handicap accessible. Tune wanted to know if an elevator would still be needed in the courthouse, since there is an alternative courtroom other than the one on the second floor. Mr. Vance said he would look into the issue and get back with the Commission.  Commissioners Skiles and Simpson both said that they are aware of theses problems, including the issue of the Prosecuting Attorney’s office being on the second floor of the judicial building, and are looking into ways of fixing them. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After the approval of the consent agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant will discuss the September membership count the SCA September 24^th PD day report, the CSIP committee progress, as well as discuss the PTO installing playground equipment. Bryant will also give a CEE update and a safety/crisis committee update. New business will include the CIA-Art department performance events, a program evaluation on guidance and counseling, the Board will consider the Newton Summer School Contract and numerous policy revisions, followed by the auditors report. The Board will then go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, discipline and real estate. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

At the City of Salem Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night in closed session, Jack Emery submitted his resignation as Emergency Management Director for Salem and Dent County. The city and county will get together to appoint a new director as quickly as possible. The closed session was then adjourned.

The Salem JV Football Tigers dropped a 26-8 decision to the Knights of St. Francois Borgia Monday. Buck Edwards scored on a 70-yard touchdown run for Salem for their only score in the second quarter while Borgia answered with a touchdown of their own, but Salem led at the half, 8-6. But the knights dominated the second half with three touchdowns. The Salem JV ended the year with a 2-3 record.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers are seeded third in district play that begins next Monday at Marshfield. Salem will play Ava at 4:00, and if they win, they would face the #1 seed, Logan-Rogersville at 7:00. There is a $3.00 admission charge at the gate.

The St. Louis Blues will return to action as they travel to Chicago to face the Blackhawks. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 7:30. The Blues have won three straight game and are 1-1 on the road this year.

Funeral services for Bessie “Betty” Washburn of Holts Summitt, Mo, formerly of Steelville, age 90, will be today at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will also be today from 1:00 to 2:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services for James J. Forgey of St. James, age 87, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Methodist Church in St. James.

Funeral services for Wayne E. Lunn of Tucumcari, New Mexico, formerly of Salem, age 83, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Elmer L. “Tug” Martin of Viburnum, age 86, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Elmer Martin Family in lieu of flowers.
