An accident occurred at 4:35 Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway K about eight miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 37-year old Tommie Hawkins of Salem was driving a 1999 Jeep Cherokee north when he crossed the centerline, sideswiped a 1994 Ford Ranger driven by 62-year old Gary Wells, and struck a 1995 Ford Taurus driven by 16-year old Alicia Kitts head on. Hawkins suffered moderate injuries and was flown to the Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Kitts suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. Hawkins was the only one not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep and Taurus were totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The Ford Ranger sustained minor damage but was driven from the scene.
An accident occurred at 3:13 Monday afternoon on Highway V at Phelps County Road 2220. According to the highway patrol report, 19-year old John Wernert of Wichita, Kansas was driving a 1994 BMW 325I north and attempted a U turn and contact was made with a 1997 GMC truck driven by 52-year old Jesse Nelson of Rolla, who was traveling north behind the BMW. Wernert suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Nelson suffered minor injuries but refused treatment. Nelson was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The BMW sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by C & C Towing. The GMC sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.
An accident occurred Tuesday morning at 8:05 in Texas County on Highway C four miles north of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, 85-year old James Lingo of Licking was driving a 2010 Ford F150 south when he ran off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch. Lingo and a passenger, 76-year old Irene Lingo of Licking, sustained minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Ford sustained moderate damage was removed from the scene by Kinder’s Towing.
A special electronic and tire recycling collection will be held on Saturday, October 19th at the Water and Sewer Construction Building at Third and Grand Street from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Electronics may be submitted free except for TV’s and monitors which are $5.00 each, and tires are $1.50 for passenger tires, $5.00 for truck tires and $10 for tractor tires.
Due to a lapse in appropriations that has caused a federal government shutdown, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facilities and lands are now closed to the public and public use activities have been suspended nationwide. This includes all National Wildlife Refuges, Waterfowl Production Areas, National Fish Hatcheries, Fish and Wildlife Coordination Offices and Ecological Services Offices. In Missouri the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has closed nine national wildlife refuges, one ecological services office, one national fish hatchery and one fish and wildlife coordination office totaling more than 61,000 acres of land. Squaw Creek, Swan Lake, Great River, Clarence Cannon, Big Muddy, Middle Mississippi, Pilot Knob, Mingo and Ozark Cavefish national wildlife refuges and Neosho National Fish Hatchery are all now closed to public access and any events scheduled at these facilities have been cancelled. In addition, the Columbia Fish and Wildlife Coordination Office, Ecological Services Office and Private Lands Office are also closed. Wildlife-related recreational activities on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands, such as hunting, fishing, environmental education or other public events scheduled at any of these facilities are cancelled. In the Midwest Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which covers the states of Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin, more than 800 employees have been placed in unpaid furlough status and 55 national wildlife refuges, 12 wetland management districts, six national fish hatcheries and more than 1.2 million acres of federal public lands are closed.
Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, wants to remind drivers that deer are more active this time of year, and to please be especially vigilant during evening and early dawn hours. Deer behavior changes due to mating season, which may cause an increase in sightings and roadway crossings. Hunting and crop harvesting may result in these animals being in places they aren’t usually seen. Drivers are urged to remain alert. Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,980 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred every 2.2 hours in the state. In these crashes, five people were killed and 411 injured. Deer often travel in groups--stay on guard after a close call or when you see a single deer. In areas where there are streams or wooded corridors surrounded by farmland, look for more deer to cross roadways. The majority of deer strike crashes occur from October through December each year, with the largest number taking place in November. Most deer strikes occur between the hours of 5 p.m. and 6:59 a.m. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds drivers that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic.
Flu shots are now available at the Dent County Health Center on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday.The cost is $25. The Health Center will bill Medicare and Medicaid but you must bring your card. The Center for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot for all those 6 months and older. The Health Center is located at 601 S. MacArthur here in Salem.
