An accident occurred at 11:00 Monday morning in Texas County on Highway 32 about five miles east of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1985 GMC Sierra driven by 18-year old Jacob Conway of Salem was traveling eastbound on Highway 32, traveled off the roadway and overturned down an embankment, coming to rest in a field. Conway suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the Salem Memorial Hospital by EMS. He was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The GMC Sierra was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Tuesday night at the city hall council chambers. The board approved the bid from Rolla Asphalt for hot mix asphalt overlay that included installation for $77.07 per ton. The streets that are to be paved are Park Street from Route J to Center Street, First Street from Pershing to Hickory Street, Third Street from Pershing to Water Street, and Oak Street from Fourth Street to Center Street. The cost to do this paving would be $54,220 and the city only had $52,479 left budgeted. There was money left over in the Special Street Fund that could be used, so the board approved the bid from Rolla Asphalt and also approved making the necessary budget adjustment to make up the $1,741 difference. City Administrator Ray Walden said the City Wide Yard Sale on October 4th was a success with 40 spaces being sold on the City Administrative Parking Lot and good weather. He went to say the Fall Clean-Up week was held last week and anyone who still has items that the street department has not picked up yet, please call the administrative office at 729-4811. The Blue Oval Car Rally was held at the courthouse square this past Saturday and organizer Randy League said the group may want to make this a two-day event in the future. Walden said the city was working on the certification on being a Work Ready Community and there will be a kickoff meeting next week. Somewhat in conjunction with that, Walden said Intercounty Electric wants to do a joint economic assessment related to the local work force and determine the economic impact. Walden stated the auditor should be at the next meeting with the audit for the city, and he would be attending the Missouri Community Betterment Annual Conference in Jefferson City this Sunday and Monday. Mayor J.J. Tune presented a plaque to Gary Cook for his 35 years of service to the City of Salem from 1977 to 2012 in the Electric Department as a lineman, foreman and supervisor. He said the city received a letter from the Dent County Museum thanking them for the $300 donation to preserve the history of Dent County. Tune wants the Utility Committee and Finance Committee to meet soon after the water and sewer rate study is complete. He also said the city will have to make some temporary repairs to the sidewalk on the McArthur that would be corrected next year. The board approved setting the Halloween hours from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 31st at homes that have outdoor lights on. The board postponed any action on an ordinance requiring convenience stores to offer “Gasoline Pre-Payment or Pre-Approval” until it can be further investigated by the board. The board then went into closed session to discuss litigation and personnel.

Roadwork continues this week in Dent County. Roadway resurfacing continues on Highway 19 between Highway 32 and Route KK in Shannon County. The contractor will install shoulders this week, weather permitting. The project is scheduled for completion in November. Roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 68 between Highway 19 and the Phelps County line now through Friday, October 24th. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area. Pavement and drainage improvements continue on Route J between Highway 72 and Highway 32. The road is closed between Highway 32/72 and 3rd Street during the work. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route around the work area. The project is scheduled for completion in November. For more information about a project, please contact MoDOT at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636).

Brandon Crawford scored from second base on a throwing error by reliever Randy Choate in the 10th inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Tuesday in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series. Choate (0-1) fielded Gregor Blanco's bunt and threw wide to first base for an error, touching off a celebration for the Giants, who took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Randal Grichuk had tied the game for St. Louis with a solo homer in the seventh as the Cardinals came close to building on their postseason narrative. Game 4 is tonight in San Francisco with Shelby Miller going for the Cardinals against fellow right-hander Ryan Vogelsong for the Giants.
