An accident occurred at 8:32 Saturday night in Dent County on Dent County Road 6470 about eight miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1993 Jeep Wrangler driven by 52-year old Richard Hobson of Salem was traveling westbound, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a utility pole, and then he fled the scene. Hobson was arrested at 4:40 Sunday afternoon and charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash and 1st degree property damage. He suffered moderate injuries, but refused medical treatment. Hobson was taken to the Dent County Jail and released. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Jeep Wrangler was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing to their lot.

The Salem Police Department released a report. On Saturday, October 12th at 7:59 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the Dent County Veterinarian Clinic in reference to a report of a theft. The investigation of the report revealed the clinic had closed for business on Friday, October 11th at about 5:00 pm. Upon opening the next day at approximately 7:30 in the morning, it was discovered that a person or persons unknown entered the building without the use of force and took a yellow Labrador retriever named Phineas. At this time there are no identified witnesses or suspects to the incident. The report is under investigation. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released several arrest reports. On Wednesday, October 9th at 11:56 in the morning, 33-year old Thomas Mabe of Steelville was arrested in Crawford County and charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest by fleeing. He also had six misdemeanor Crawford County warrants that included failure to register a motor vehicle, failure to wear a seat belt, driving while revoked, speeding, 2nd degree tampering with a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest. He was taken to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and put on a 24-hour hold. On Thursday, October 10th at 11:37 in the morning, 23-year old Megan Greene of Viburnum was arrested in Crawford County on a felony Franklin County warrant for dangerous drugs (possession of drug precursors). She was also charged with failure to register a motor vehicle. Greene was taken to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and held on bond. Later that evening at 7:10, 26-year old Charles Hornebeck of Steelville was arrested in Crawford County for felony possession of amphetamine and possession of meth precursor drug with intent to manufacture. He was taken to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and held on no bond. On Friday, October 11th at 7:41 in the evening, 26-year old Marcus Kitson of Salem was arrested in Dent County for failure to appear for felony passing bad checks of $500 or more. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on no bond.

On October 12th at about 6:00 in the evening, the Dent County Sheriff's Office received a report from a woman that a vehicle had been taken from her father's farm on Dent County Road 2020. The party stated that the last time anyone had seen the vehicle was approximately 3 weeks ago when they were out working on the property. The vehicle is described as a 1975 green Ford Maverick, the family does not have the title or vehicle identification number. The reported value of the vehicle is $1,000. On Sunday, October 13th at 4:30 in the afternoon, a reporting party called and said that her friends’ bike had been taken from her residence. A deputy responded and met with reporting party and the owner of the bike. The victim stated that they had bought the bike last week and was working on it. The bike is described as a 26", 18-speed, red Roadmaster with an estimated value of $50.00. The bike was last seen on Friday, October 11th and was discovered missing on Sunday, October 13th at 3:30 pm. Anyone with information that would assist on the above reports is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff's Office at 729-3241.

The Missouri Department of Insurance is encouraging consumers who are eligible for Medicare to review their plan options and costs during this year’s open enrollment. To help consumers choose a plan that best meets their needs, the department offers assistance through the CLAIM program. Funded by the department and Medicare, CLAIM provides free, unbiased help to Missourians on Medicare and their caregivers. During the annual open enrollment period, which runs now through December 7th, consumers can change their Part D drug coverage or Medicare Advantage plans. Missouri consumers can ask questions by phone or arrange one-on-one counseling by calling 800-390-3330 or visiting missouriclaim.org. The website also offers a list of free open enrollment events that CLAIM is hosting throughout Missouri during open enrollment. CLAIM also can assist consumers on limited income determine whether they qualify for federal or state help in paying for prescription drugs. Medicare offers the Extra Help program, and the state offers the MoRx program. Medicare has strict rules on forbidden sales practices. Also, remember that Medicare is not part of the federal health insurance marketplace (exchange) under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The marketplace is not meant to serve people with Medicare.

Flu shots are now available at the Dent County Health Center on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday.The cost is $25. The Health Center will bill Medicare and Medicaid but you must bring your card. The Center for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot for all those 6 months and older. The Health Center is located at 601 S. MacArthur here in Salem. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers won their match last night with Plato and will host the Willow Springs Bears tonight at the SHS Gym starting at 6:00. The varsity game will follow.

Hyun-Jin Ryu scattered three hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0, in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series at Chavez Ravine to avoid falling in a 3-0 hole. Adam Wainwright (0-1) tossed seven innings while giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five. The Cardinals still lead the best of seven series 2-1 and Game 4 will be held tonight. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:32.

The St. Louis Blues will host the San Jose Sharks tonight at the Scottrade Center at 7:00. The Blues are 4-0-0 on the year.

Funeral services for Carol Ann Burgess of Washington, Missouri, age 71, will be held today at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr. Visitation will be held from 10:00 in the morning until service time today. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Herbert Eugene Shanor of Salem, age 57, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to Wilson Mortuary for family expenses.

Funeral services for Douglas Eugene Swearengin of Salem, age 57, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the children of Doug Swearengin.

Funeral services for Elder Kenneth Parker of Bunker, age 73, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the United Baptist Tabernacle in Bunker. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 at the United Baptist Tabernacle in Bunker. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker.

Funeral services for Bobbie Lee Mead of Salem, age 81, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
