The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday. At the meeting, it was reported that Commissioners Dennis Purcell and Gary Larson attended a meeting of the South Central County Commissioners in Licking where State Treasurer Clint Zweifel spoke to those attending the meeting. He gave an overview of the state budget as well as the need for action concerning jobs in the state, open government and education issues. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was elected vice-president of the group for the coming year. Dent County Emergency Management Director Brad Nash and George LaJoie of Air Evac met with the Commissioners to discuss the interoperable communications system and submitted a sample system overview for their review. Nash was given approval to put together a packet outlining system requirements and to request the submission of bids for final approval by the commission. Nash was given approval to spend $2,000 for equipment for the emergency operations center. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5170, 5630, and 5680, and brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 5630 and 5670. Purcell also said that District 1workers would be repairing chip and seal roads 4210, 4220, 4128 and 5510. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that workers were working to repair a bridge on Dent County Road 5525 that was severely undermined. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3090. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a meeting of the MRPC Emergency Planning Committee in St. James on Wednesday to review the application for a hazmat training grant for the area. Skiles will be attending the Missouri Conservation Commissioners meeting today in Kirksville to discuss the elk restoration. The commissioner’s quarterly meeting has been set for Monday, October 18^th at 7:00 p.m. at the Judicial Building. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to request mail out of absentee ballots for the November 2 election would be Wednesday, October 27^th. The Dent County Clerks office will be open Saturday, October 30 from 8 a.m. until noon for absentee voting. If anyone has questions contact the clerks office at 729-4144. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Jay Johnson was crowned the Netcoming King last night between the JV and varsity volleyball games. Other candidates were seniors Ryan Smith and Lane Howard. His court was filled out with junior attendant Dustin Sercl and sophomore attendant Luke Swiney. Congratulations Jay!

The 12th Annual Octoberfest sponsored by the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department will be held this Saturday on Main Street in Bunker. The parade lineup starts at 9 AM and the theme this year is “Decades.” Booths will be set up from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM with numerous events being held through out the day. There will be a car show from 9;00 AM until 2:00 PM with a $10 entry fee. New this year will be a Quilt Exhibit at the First Baptist Church on Main Street from 9:00 AM until 2:00. The winners of the Cutest Baby Contest will be announced at 1:00. Also at Octoberfest will be numerous kids’ games and a silent auction as well as the fire department’s traditional pork steak Bar-B-Cue. Then at 6:00, an evening concert will be held as there are four bands scheduled to perform: Crimson Gold, the Harpers, Logan Creek Band and New Highway. There is an admission charge for the concert and there will be refreshments available. Octoberfest is the Bunker Fire Department's annual fund-raiser.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers moved to 4-2 in the SCA as they defeated the Mountain View-Liberty Lady Eagles in two straight games, 25-23 and 25-22. The Lady Tigers will participate in the Ozark Grand Slam this Saturday before finishing out their regular season next Tuesday night against Mountain Grove.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers are seeded 4^th in District play as they will face the St. Clair Lady Bulldogs on Monday, October 25^th at 5:00 at Owensville. The winner of that match will face the top seeded St. Francis Borgia Lady Knights on Tuesday, October 26^th also at 5:00 at Owensville.

The Salem Football Tigers will travel to Owensville tonight to face the Dutchmen starting at 7:00. Salem enters the game with a 5-2 record and Owensville is 6-1 on the year. You can hear the game on KSMO radio and on ksmoradio.com starting at 6:30 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt.

Derek McClain caught a 73-yard touchdown pass with 1:30 seconds left in the game and Dylan Wisdom added the two point conversion to give the 7^th grade football Tigers a 16-12 win over West Plains on Thursday night. Wisdom also added an 11-yard run and a two-point conversion in the 2nd quarter. They finished the season 4-0-1.

West Plains had an 8-0 lead at halftime and never looked back, beating the 8^th grade football Tigers, 24-6. Paul McClain caught a 12-yard pass from Nate Stallings for Salem's only score in the fourth quarter. The 8^th grade finished the season with a 2-3 record.

The Missouri Football Tigers will face Texas A & M Saturday morning starting at 11:00. Missouri enters the game with a 5-0 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Steve Sullivan netted two goals to help the Nashville Predators beat the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, at Bridgestone Arena. T.J. Oshie, Patrik Berglund and Matt D'Agostini each had a goal for St. Louis, which posted home wins over Philadelphia and Anaheim to begin the season. Jaroslav Halak was beaten four times on 22 shots. The Blues remain on the road as they will travel to Dallas to face the Stars Saturday night at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Memorial services for Joann Ellen Portwood of Salem, age 77, will be held today at 1:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Dottie Bohnenkamp of Cherryville, age 67, will be held today at 1:00 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Steelville. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Shirley Ann Shoemate of St. Charles, age 75, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Dale E. Casey Belflower of Rolla, age 99, will be held at 11:00 Monday at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 4:00 to 6:00. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral services for Dorothy Richardson of Columbia, formerly of Steelville, age 72, will be held Tuesday at noon at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice.

Funeral services for James Ottis Devall of Salem, age 84 will be at 1:00 Thursday, October 21^st at Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery with full military honors.
