Imagine everything you would need to manage Missouri’s public forests, lakes and streams. Gather a random selection of all that used gear in one place and call out “What are you gonna give for it?” Now you have a mental picture of what will happen at the Missouri Department of Conservation surplus property auction October 17th in Salem. The auction gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Conservation Department Maintenance Center at the junction of Highways 72 and 32. Auction items will be on display from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday. You can pre-register at the auction site from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friday or starting at 7:30 a.m. the day of the sale. The more than 450 items to be sold at auction include cameras, televisions, VCRs, copiers, projectors, a public address system, a weather station, office furniture, tractors, bulldozers, bush hogs, front-end loaders, planters, plows, seed drills and mowers. Camper shells, lawn mowers, used tires, a fork lift, a battery charger, an auto diagnostic analyzer, floor and hydraulic jacks, table saws, garage doors, generators, bathroom sinks, a water fountain, water tanks, space heaters and air conditioners. More than 75 half-ton and three quarter-ton 4X4 pickup trucks, passenger vans, sedans, utility trailers, 15 boat trailers, more than 20 boats ranging from 14 to 20 feet, 19 outboard motors from 4 to 175 hp, fish finders, two canoes and nine all-terrain vehicles. A complete list of sale items will be available at the registration desk the day of the sale. All property must be paid for on the day of the sale and before removal. Acceptable methods of payment include cash, MasterCard or Visa or personal checks with proper ID.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. Board of Education pictures will be taken for the yearbook, then after approval of the consent agenda, which will include the minutes from the previous meeting, the attendance report, food service report and substitute list, Superintendent Steve Bryant will then address communications. During the Superintendent’s report, Bryant will give a September membership count, the SCA September 21st PD report and a facilities update. In new business, there will be program evaluations on instructional effectiveness, guidance and counseling along with transportation. There will be a CIA-instructional practices inventory IPI process, the Board will adopt the Assessment Plan, approve bus routes and address the 2008/2009-auditor report. The Board will then adjourn to go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel and discipline. The regular monthly meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public. 

The Annual Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, November 12th at the Commons. The annual fundraising event will feature a silent auction, a live auction and dinner catered by Salem Catering. The Chamber will honor the 2009 award winners during the banquet. Awards for 2009 include; business of the year, for a business having more than 15 employees; small business of the year for a business having 15 or less employees, a customer service award will recognize the efforts of an individual or business and a visionary award will be given to a business, individual and a youth. To place your nominations for the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce 2009 awards stop the Chamber office located at 200 South Main by Friday, October 30th.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Chamber office. A mine rescue team from The Doe Run Company, referred to as the Maroon Team, successfully captured the Best in State title for a record fourth consecutive year during the 27th annual Southeast Missouri Mine Rescue Contest at Missouri University of Science & Technology (MS&T) in Rolla. In addition, Doe Run’s Gray Team took third place and several individuals also earned awards. The competition featured 15 teams from five states. Gray Team member Ken Wood, a surface maintenance employee at Fletcher Mine/Mill won second place in the TMS0412 Gas Bench man competition. Luke Davis, a hoist man at Fletcher Mine, won third place in this competition. Maroon Team members are: Captain Steve Setzer, Luke David, Shawn Pratt, Jerry Laramore, Andrew Hampton, Denny Dickerson, Ricky Martin, Kevin James and Richie Brewer. The Gary Team’s Garry Moore, Jr., an underground maintenance employee at Sweetwater Mine, won first place in the BG-4 breathing apparatus bench man contest. Moore has won this contest in four of the last five years. He is also a previous National Champion in this contest. The Gray Team members are: Captain Wayne Marlin, Charlie Walker, Randy Hill, Gary Moore, JR., William Johnston, Ken Wood and Brad Beck. Dan King is the team trainer.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will be at Mountain Grove tonight to face the Lady Panthers in SCA play starting at 6:00 with the JV contest followed by the varsity match.

The Salem Football 7th and 8th grade football Tigers will wrap up their season against West Plains today at West Plains starting at 5:30.

The Salem Football Tigers begin District play tomorrow night as they host the Owensville Dutchmen starting at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and ksmoradio.com.

The St. Louis Blues will be in Phoenix tonight to face the Coyotes. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 9:00.

Funeral services for Bob Blankenship of Salem, age 76, will be held today at 10:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Licking Cemetery.

Funeral services for Olive May Dooley of Salem, age 81, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral arrangements for Nora Broyles of Salem, age 96, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.

Funeral services for Johnnie W. Stevens of Farmington, formerly of Bunker, age 81, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Bunker Tabernacle in Bunker. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Conway Cemetery in rural Bunker. Memorials may be made to the Stevens family. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for James Winford Emory of Salem, age 79, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Salem Care Center.

Funeral services for Alice Alma Wood of Steelville, age 82, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Graveside services for James Gordon Clayton Jr. of Salem, age 57, will be held Monday morning at 11:00 at North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to a fund for the Grandchildren.

Funeral services for Everett Boulch of Salem, age 77, will be held Monday at James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Sam Crocker Cemetery.
