The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will be conducting a Workshop, called by Chairman Jerry Craig, tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:00 pm. The Workshop will be to discuss a plan for development of a map to show the city limits and codes in force by area. There will be an open discussion of high priority needs from prior meetings, observations from city inspectors, a review of mobile home and mobile home park codes currently in effect and enforcement of code violations, other codes that members of the Commission would like to discuss and to develop a list of priorities and the process to attain goals. The Workshop of the City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released its report for October 2nd and 3rd. On Wednesday, October 2nd at 2:00 in the afternoon, a 67-year old Salem female was transported to New Hope in Sullivan in lieu of a mental commitment order.  Later that afternoon at 3:35, an officer observed a 17-year old male and a 16-year old male juvenile fighting near the intersection of Macarthur and Gibbs. Both were taken into custody for disorderly conduct. The 17 year-old was issued a summons to appear in court and released, while the juvenile suspect was released to his mother and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. At 9:00 that evening, an officer was called to a residence in the 600 block of West Fourth in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence and took items valued at $700. At 11:47 that night, an officer made contact with a 27-year old male near the 900 block of East Third who had an active arrest warrant from Rolla. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition. On Thursday, October 3rd at 10:49 in the morning, an officer made contact with a 22-year old Salem male near the 1000 block of South Highway 19 who had an active arrest warrant from Jefferson County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated pending extradition. At 2:45 that afternoon, an officer was called to the Casey's General Store located on Macarthur in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that the driver of a blue Jeep Cherokee pumped $20 in fuel and left without paying. About the same time another officer was dispatched to Mobil to investigate a theft from a vehicle. The investigation revealed that someone took a JC Higgins 22 caliber rifle, valued $200, from the trunk of a car that was parked in the lot. At 10:33 that night, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 21-year old Salem male on an active arrest warrant from Phelps County. He was released and given a date to appear in court after posting bond. Anyone with any info regarding the thefts and burglary may contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

An accident occurred at 11:20 Sunday morning in Dent County on Highway O about half a mile north of Lecoma. According to the highway patrol report, 26-year old Joshua Heimburger of Salem was driving a 2001 Ford Focus north when he lost control, causing the vehicle to run off the right side of the road, return to the road, skid into the left ditch, and overturn. Heimburger suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. He was wearing his seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released a report. On Tuesday, October 8th deputies responded to County Road 4140 for a report of a vehicle off in the wooded area.  Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 1997 Jeep Wrangler that had previously been reported stolen from the Horseshoe Saloon Bar and Grill on September 8th. Whitaker Auto Body towed the vehicle, and the owner was notified of the recovery.

Flu shots are now available at the Dent County Health Center on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday.The cost is $25. The Health Center will bill Medicare and Medicaid but you must bring your card. The Center for Disease Control recommends an annual flu shot for all those 6 months and older. The Health Center is located at 601 S. MacArthur here in Salem. The Mountain Grove Panthers scored 35 unanswered points to beat the Salem Football Tigers Friday night by the score of 35-6. The Tigers lone touchdown came on a 12-yard pass from Dylan Wisdom to Tristan Dubois. The Tigers have now lost four straight games and are 3-4 on the year, and are 1-3 in the SCA. They will be at Mountain View-Liberty Friday night to face the Eagles starting at 7:00.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host Plato tonight starting at 6:00 at the Salem High School Gym with the JV contest with the varsity contest to follow. The Lady Tigers are still looking for the first win of the year.

Rookie Michael Wacha outdueled former Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw with another stellar postseason performance, and the St. Louis Cardinals took a commanding lead in the National League Championship Series with a 1-0 Game 2 edging of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Busch Stadium. Wacha (1-0) limited a slightly depleted Dodgers lineup to five hits while striking out eight over 6 2/3 frames in his second career playoff outing. Four St. Louis relievers preserved the shutout, with Trevor Rosenthal striking out the side for the save. Game 3 of the NLCS will be tonight in L.A. and you can hear it on KSMO starting at 6:32.

The 25th-ranked Missouri Tigers snapped the seventh-ranked Georgia Bulldogs' 15-game home winning streak with a 41-26 victory, but lost quarterback James Franklin for the year to an injury in the process. Franklin completed 18-of-27 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown before leaving early in the fourth quarter with a separated right shoulder. L'Damian Washington caught seven passes for 115 yards and two scores for Missouri (6-0, 2-0 SEC), who are off to a 6-0 start for the first time since beginning the 2010 campaign 7-0. The Tigers will host the 22nd ranked Florida Gators on Saturday.

David Backes potted a pair of goals and assisted on another, helping the St. Louis Blues achieve their first 4-0-0 start in franchise history with a 5-3 decision over the reeling New York Rangers from Scottrade Center on Saturday. Alex Steen had a goal for the fourth consecutive game and chipped in three assists for the surging Blues, who have outscored their foes by a 19-7 margin during their surge. The Blues will host the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday at 7:00.

Three of Sam Bradford's 12 completions went for touchdowns and the Rams defense stood tall as St. Louis upset the Houston Texans, 38-13, from Reliant Stadium. Bradford connected on 12-of-16 for 117 yards and three scores to three different receivers. The Rams will be in Carolina to face the Panthers Sunday at noon.

Fans at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium set a world record for loudest outdoor arena on Sunday and they had a lot to cheer about. Jamaal Charles had two touchdown runs and the Chiefs had 10 sacks and three interceptions in a 24-7 victory over the Oakland Raiders that kept Kansas City's best start in a decade alive. The Chiefs will host the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Funeral services for Carol Ann Burgess of Washington, Missouri, age 71, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the Salem Chapel of James and Gahr. Visitation will be held from 10:00 in the morning until service time Tuesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Herbert Eugene Shanor of Salem, age 57, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. There will be no interment. Memorials may be made to Wilson Mortuary for family expenses.

Funeral services for Douglas Eugene Swearengin of Salem, age 57, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the children of Doug Swearengin.

Funeral services for Bobbie Lee Mead of Salem, age 81, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
