An accident happened Friday night at 8:30 in Morgan County on Highway 50 just east of Highway 135 that left four people dead and two more with serious injuries. The accident happened when a 1999 Chevy Malibu driven eastbound by 22-year old Kelsey Toebben of Jefferson City, attempted to pass a tractor- trailer and collided head-on with a 2005 Volvo S60 driven westbound by 42-year old Philip Allen of Rolla. Both vehicles came partially to rest in the roadway. Both drivers, Kelsey Toebben and Philip Allen, were pronounced dead at the scene along with a passenger in the Volvo, 44-year old Carin Allen of Rolla. All three bodies were taken to the Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Home in California, Missouri. Justin Gaddis, age 25 of Knob Noster who was a passenger in the Malibu, suffered serious injuries in the accident and later died at the University Hospital in Columbia. Suffering serious injuries from the Volvo were 14-year old Patrick Allen and his sister, 12-year old Corinna Allen, both of Rolla. Corinna was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City by Lifeflight Eagle while Patrick was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital in Columbia. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident and were removed by Don’s Towing of Sedalia. Everyone in both vehicles was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. 

An accident happened early Sunday in Crawford County at 2:27 in the morning at 403 Glassey Road. According to the highway patrol report, Jared Doss of Steelville was walking on Glassey Raod when 22-year old Brandon Boyer of Cuba backed his 1997 Ford F-150 Pickup out of a driveway and struck Doss in the road. Doss suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan before being transported to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. The pickup was driven from the scene with no damage. 

The Salem Police released reports on a couple of accidents within the city limits. On Wednesday October 1st about 9:07 in the evening, Donna L. Jarvis of Salem stopped a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox on Jack Street, stepped out of the vehicle, and failed to put the vehicle in park.  The Chevrolet proceeded to roll backwards to the west, striking Jarvis with the drivers’ door knocking her to the ground. The drivers’ side door then collided with a parked and unoccupied 1985 Chevrolet Scottsdale owned by Sherry Lynn Moore of Salem. Jarvis suffered minor injuries in the accident. The Equinox sustained moderate damage and the Scottsdale sustained minor damage. On Tuesday October 7th about 5:47 in the afternoon, a 2014 Dodge Avenger driven by Kurtis Harwood of Rolla and owned by Dana Brake of Salem, was traveling east in the turn lane on Highway 32. At that time, a 2002 Dodge Ram driven by Gabriel Parris of Salem and owned by Kimberly D. Parris, was making a left turn off of Washington on to Highway 32 West. According to the report, Gabriel Parris was unable to see due to a stopped vehicle and was waived on by the driver of the stopped vehicle. The Ram collided with the Avenger resulting in extensive damage, while the Ram sustained moderate damage. All persons involved reported minor injuries, but refused transportation by ambulance for medical treatment. According to the Salem Police report, a witness stated the Dodge Ram being operated by Harwood was traveling at a high rate of speed and was using the turning lane to pass several vehicles. 

At the Salem Tiger Football game Friday, Emily Owen was crowned the 2014 Homecoming Queen. Her court was comprised of other senior candidates, Alexis Crocker and Chelsey Williams, junior Natalie Leathers, sophomore Kristen Strebe and freshman Trista Heavin. The 2013 Homecoming Queen Gabby Sanderson crowned Owen at the ceremony.

A representative from the Central Missouri Agency on Aging will be available to assist during the Med D open enrollment period.  The Salem Community Center @ the Armory Computer Lab will be used to help participants review their current plan and shop for the Part D plan that best meets your personal needs and financial situation. Appointments are available on: Thursday, October 23rd, Friday, October 24th then again on Thursday, November 6th and Friday, November 7th and the final one will be held on Thursday, November 13th. The Sullivan Eagles pushed across a run in the top of the 8th inning and held on to beat the Salem Lady Softball Tigers by the score of 5-4 in the District Semi-Final at Union Saturday. The Lady Tigers had homeruns in the game by Savannah Hanning and Camryn Pryor. The Lady Softball Tigers finished with a perfect SCA record of 5-0 for their third straight SCA Championship. They finished the season with a 16-6 record. The Lady Eagles went on to win the District 9, Class 3 Championship by beating St. James who upset Union earlier in the day, by the score of 11-6. The Lady Eagles will face Bolivar on Wednesday.

The Salem Football Tigers hung with the Mountain View/Liberty Eagles through the first half and trailed only 6-0 at halftime, only to have the Eagles explode for 35 points in the 2nd half en route to a 41-6 win over Salem. Salem’s only score was touchdown pass from Zak Eplin to Paul McClain. Salem falls to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the SCA on the year and will host Cabool Friday night at 7:00 and it will be Senior Night.

Kolten Wong capped a dramatic four-homer night for the Cardinals by belting the winning solo blast off Sergio Romo in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Giants, 5-4, and tie the National League Championship Series after two games. Matt Carpenter, Oscar Traveras and Matt Adams also homered for St. Louis in the game. The win came with a cost as Yadier Molina suffered a strained left oblique in the sixth inning and may be lost for the rest of the year. The two teams will play In San Francisco Tuesday afternoon in Game 3.

Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain came through with run-scoring hits in the top of the ninth to lift the ever-resilient Royals to yet another narrow postseason win, a 6-4 Game 2 verdict Saturday over the Baltimore Orioles that gave Kansas City a commanding 2 games to none lead in the American League Championship Series. Cain's late RBI single was his fourth hit of the game, while Eric Hosmer went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the Royals' sixth consecutive victory of the 2014 playoffs. The Royals and Orioles will play tonight at Kansas City.

The Georgia defense intercepted Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk four times and also forced him to fumble en route to a 34-0 whitewashing of the Tigers. Mauk finished the contest just 9-of-21 passing for 97 yards. Missouri managed just 147 total yards and only 10 first downs in the game and fall to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the SEC. They will be at Florida this Saturday night.

The St. Louis Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers in Monday Night Football tonight at 7:30.

Funeral services for J.C. McCarthy, Sr. of Steelville will be Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Alan Dewayne Skaggs of Salem, age 40, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dewayne Skaggs Memorial Fund at the Bank of Salem.

Funeral services for June Heavin of Salem, age 61, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00, with an Eastern Star Service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Salem Christian Church.

Funeral services for Charles Haas will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be held at the church Friday morning from 9:00 to 11:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Funeral services for Donald E. Coleman of Leasburg, age 81, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery.
