The 12th Annual Octoberfest sponsored by the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department will be held this Saturday on Main Street in Bunker. The parade lineup starts at 9 AM and the theme this year is “Decades.” Booths will be set up from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM with numerous events being held through out the day.  There will be a car show from 9;00 AM until 2:00 PM with a $10 entry fee. New this year will be a Quilt Exhibit at the First Baptist Church on Main Street from 9:00 AM until 2:00. The winners of the Cutest Baby Contest will be announced at 1:00. Also at Octoberfest will be numerous kids’ games and a silent auction as well as the fire department’s traditional pork steak Bar-B-Cue. Then at 6:00, an evening concert will be held as there are four bands scheduled to perform: Crimson Gold, the Harpers, Logan Creek Band and New Highway. There is an admission charge for the concert and there will be refreshments available. Octoberfest is the Bunker Fire Department's annual fund-raiser.

A total of 22 violations were issued and 54 warnings as a result of a sobriety checkpoint conducted in Phelps County on Highway 63, approximately one-half mile north of the Rolla city limits. The checkpoint was initiated at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, September 24^th and concluded at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 25^th.  There was one commercial vehicle violation, six seat-belt violations, six non-moving violations, two driver’s license violations, four uninsured motorists violations and three misdemeanor drug violations.

Trying to predict the peak of fall color is difficult. Missouri is blessed with a great variety of trees, shrubs and vines. Their leaves turn at different times and, as a result, Missourians enjoy a fall color season that may last four to six weeks. The peak of fall color in Missouri is usually mid-October. This is when maples, ashes, oaks and hickories are at the height of their fall display. Normally by late October, the colors have faded and the leaves are beginning to drop from the trees. In this area, the trees are still mostly green, with some dogwoods and maples showing red. The sumacs are already displaying red foliage, as is Virginia creeper, which spreads across the ground and crawls up the trunks of trees. More cool nights and warm days will encourage our multicolored autumn farewell. Some of the best areas to view the colors are around the Current River, Jacks Fork Rver, Meramec River and the Huzzah Creek. A Fall Float can show the vibrance of color the Ozarks have to show as the abundant moisture allows for many colors to florish. Driving routes in this area can include Highway 19, Highway 119, Routes K and KK in Shannon County, and Route KK in Reynolds County. Areas of interest include Montauk State Park, Sutton’s Bluff, Shawnee Mac Lakes, Akers Ferry, Indian Trail State Forest and many of the conservation areas in the region.

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the City of Salem and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will offer a tire and electronics collection this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the utility/construction department’s parking lot at corner of Third and Grand Streets in Salem. Hard drives, printers, phones, microwaves, VCRs and most other electronics may be dropped off free of charge. Fees will be charged for TVs and monitors. Televisions will cost $5 for households and $10 for businesses. Each computer monitor will cost $5. Fees will also be charged for tires. Passenger tires will be $1.50 each; truck tires will be $5 each; and tractor tires will be $10 each. Tires from businesses are not accepted. You must unload the items yourself. The collection is open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties.

The Dent County Health Center will be holding a Flu Clinic, this Thursday, October 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The clinic is open to the general public. The costs of the shots are $25 or Medicare and Medicaid will be billed. Be sure and bring your cards, and supplemental cards. The Centers for Disease Control is recommending vaccination for everyone 6 months and older. Flu shots will also continue to be available on a walk-in basis at the Health Center at 601 S. MacArthur, 8 to 4, Monday through Fridays.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4^th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award.   Criteria/eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office, 200 S. Main St. Nominations will be accepted through tomorrow. Completed nominations can be mailed, faxed or brought to the Chamber office. Banquet tickets can be purchased for the evening’s festivities at the Chamber office for $20 each.  Need further information - please call Chamber Director Genie at 729-6900.

The Ozark Rivers Audubon will meet on Thursday, October 14^th at 7:00 pm. "Tanager Trails Nature Photographs" by Connie Roberts will open the program, followed by a discussion of the future of Tanager Trails.  The meeting will be at the Eugene Northern Community Center at 400 West 4th Street in Rolla, one block north of the Phelps County Courthouse. Refreshments are provided, and all meetings are free and open to the public. For more information, please call 364-8567.
