The Salem Quiz Bowl team traveled to Columbia to compete in the University of Missouri Fall Quiz Bowl Tournament. Salem Quiz Bowl took the 1^st place trophy in the Small School Division and 4^th ranking overall in the tournament. Salem was the only small school to make the final Eight. The tournament used an especially difficult pyramidal format and required teams to play at least 11 games and won against Ladue, Villa Duchene, North Shelby, Hickman and Pilot Grove. The 2009/2010 Varsity Quiz Bowl team members are: Bret Hagler, Phillip Moser, Patrick Witbrod, Caety Brantley, Sarah Gollhofer and Kendra Case. The JV Quiz Bowl team members are: Lane Howard, Ashley Greenshields, Kaycee Webber, Sarah Elliott, Tarynn Huitt, Mitch Lo, Emily Moser and Rachelle Hayes. The teams are coached by Susan Sheeley and Wanda Nickles. Winning this tournament secures Salem a seat at two prestigious National tournaments one on Memorial Day weekend in Chicago and one held in June in Washington, D.C.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a stolen handgun, threatening involving a knife, an illegal weapon, possession, a commitment order, theft, and a disturbance. On Tuesday October 6 at approximately 12:40 p.m. an officer was contacted by a citizen and requested to check a handgun to see if it was stolen. A check on the handgun revealed it was stolen from Hillsboro in Jefferson County. The handgun was taken as evidence. Later that afternoon at approximately 3:08 p.m. an officer was detailed to Roosevelt and Maple in reference to a juvenile threatening other juveniles with a knife. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 12-year old male juvenile of Salem for 3^rd degree assault. The juvenile was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. On Wednesday, October 7, at approximately 2:45 pm, an officer was sent to the Salem High School in reference to an illegal weapon. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old male and the detention of a 16- year old female both of Salem for unlawful use of a weapon. The male suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The female suspect was released to her parents and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. Later that evening at approximately 5:46, an officer on patrol observed underage smoking. Further investigation led to the arrest of two 17-year old males of Salem for possession of marijuana. The suspects were issued a summons to appear in court and released. A little later that evening at approximately 5:47, a commitment order was issued on an 88 year-old male of Salem. An officer transported the 88 year-old male to the New Hope Hospital in Sullivan where he was released for treatment. On Thursday October 8 at approximately 10:17 an officer was detailed to Studio 573 on Fourth Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed a 28-year old female and a 32-year old female both of Salem took $67.00 in hair products. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspects who were issued summons to appear in court and released. On Friday October 9 at approximately 4:13 AM, an officer was detailed to the 400 block of North Park reference a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 20-year old male of Salem for disorderly conduct. The suspect was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee (HSOC) would like to show area residents how it has been spending homeland security dollars in the region over the past three years. As a part of its annual meeting on Thursday, October 15^th, Region I HSOC will showcase some of its equipment purchases that are now located in the region and available in the event of an emergency. The group will hold its annual meeting at the Nelson Hart Community Center in the Nelson Hart Park in St. James. The public is invited to come out from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. to see equipment exhibition. Items to be on display include a Veterinarian Medical Assistance Trailer, Rolla Homeland Security Response Team Mobile Command Unit, Phelps County Regional Medical Center Mobile Office and Prime Mover, Red Cross Shelter Supply Trailer and Prime Mover, Mass Casualty Incident Response Trailer, Elliot Data Badging System, Satellite Phone, and
Mobile Handheld Radios. The Region I HSOC, established along the boundaries of the State Highway Patrol Troop I, includes Crawford, Dent, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Laclede counties.
