The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, property damage, a suspicious vehicle, and a stolen debit card. On Monday, October 3^rd at 4:01 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of East Third Street in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a DeWalt cordless drill valued at $250 from the porch of a residence. On Tuesday, October 4^th at 11:19 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 200 block of South Warfel Street in reference to property damage. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown damaged a park bench. The value of the damage is $30. At 11:13 later that night, an officer was sent to investigate a suspicious vehicle. The investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year old Salem male for possession of amphetamines and a 28-year old Salem male for possession of synthetic narcotics, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Both men were incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Thursday, October 6^th at 4:00 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen debit card. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown used the debit card of another on two occasions for a total of $5 in purchases. Anyone with any information regarding the theft, property damage, or stolen debit card reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

An Electronics Collection Recycling, sponsored by the City of Salem, the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) will be held on Saturday, October 15^th from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at the corner of Third and Grand Streets in Salem. Computers, CPU’s, keyboards, printers, VCR’s, cell phones, and other electronics will be accepted free of charge from residents. Fees will be charged for TV’s at the cost $5.00 for residents and $10.00 for businesses. The fee for computer monitors is $5.00 per resident. Computers WILL NOT be accepted from businesses. Caring for your woodland is a long-term proposition where one decision can have impacts for decades. Call Before You Cut, a new outreach effort, provides information to help Missouri woodland owners conduct tree harvests wisely. The Call Before You Cut campaign encourages landowners to call 877-564-7483 toll-free for free information. A live operator is available from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays except holidays. Callers receive information packets to help them set up timber sales and other management information for their woodlands. Forest covers roughly one-third of Missouri, and private landowners own 83 percent of those timberlands, which covers roughly one-third of the state. They are key providers of trees to produce some of Missouri’s widely sought-after wood products, such as flooring, white oak for wine barrels, and black walnut products. There will be an ice cream social at Twin Pines Conservation Education Center on Saturday, October 15^th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm featuring homemade ice cream, a variety of desserts, and music from the Bakers. A special treat this year will be the unveiling of a new exhibit. The fall festival has been held each of the past two years celebrating the opening of a new feature at Twin Pines. The past two years has seen the opening of the restored Vann School and the Dedication of the ADA accessible archery range.  This year’s exhibit has long been awaited by many and will feature callers from each of the local artisans featured in the Turkey Call Makers Past and Present  (1994) and the Rest of the Best (1999) by Earl Mickles. The Bakers, featuring Trustin Baker, who placed third in the 2011 American Heritage Music Festival, will be playing during that time. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently awarded a contract for improvements to Route 49 in Iron County. The $78,415 contract was awarded to CE Contracting, Inc. from St. Genevieve and the project will complete improvements to the sidewalks on Route 49 in Viburnum to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Weather permitting, the work could begin as early as Monday, October 17^th and will be completed by mid December. Work zones will be marked with signs as the improvements are being made. MoDOT will alert drivers prior to any change in traffic. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to Thayer Tuesday night in three games. After losing the first game, 25-23, Salem came back to win the second game, 25-23. Thayer took the third game by the score of 25-11. The JV faired better as they won in two straight games, 25-22 and 25-16. Salem plays at Mountain View Thursday starting at 6:00.

Game 3 of the National League Championship Series will showcase a pair of aces, as Chris Carpenter for the St. Louis Cardinals will be up against Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo. The series is tied at 1-1. You can hear Game 3 tonight on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 6:30

University of Missouri senior basketball guard Marcus Denmon was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Additionally, junior Ricardo Ratliffe and senior Laurence Bowers were preseason honorable mentions selections, although Bowers will miss the upcoming season after suffering a knee injury last week. Denmon was also named to the Wooden Award watch list.

Funeral services for Edward Duncan of Salem, age 77, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Richard Lee McWhorter of Fulton, formerly of St. James, age 59, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
