An accident occurred in Dent County Saturday at 7:25 in the morning on Highway 32 about two miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire driven by 19-year old Brittany R. Klemp of Salem, crossed the centerline and ran off the left side, striking an embankment and a mailbox. The Pontiac then overturned and struck another mailbox, coming to rest off the roadway. Klemp was seriously injured and airlifted by Air Evac to St. Johns Medical Center in Creve Coeur. The Pontiac was removed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, Klemp was not wearing a safety restraint.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting at the Salem TCRC Monday night after a reception for the new City Administrator Clayton Lucas. The board approved the request from the Salem United Methodist Church to close Doss Road for the Trunk and Treat celebration on Halloween from Highway 32-72 to Roosevelt from 5:00 to 9:00, and they approved the closing of Water Street from Franklin to Hunt Street for the Grace Community Church celebration on Halloween from 4:00 to 9:00. The board voted not to purchase a new one ton wire rope hoist until it can be determined if the old motor can be repaired. Public Works Director Bill Huffman gave a report on what the individual departments would be doing the next couple of weeks before City Administrator Clayton Lucas reported that he met with the city employees and handed out the new employee manual. He said that he also has been reviewing the city ordinances and projects, and will be working on the strategic plan for the city with the aldermen through public hearings and workshops. Mayor Gary Brown wanted to remind everyone that Fall Clean-up Week is currently going on now through Friday on your regular pickup date. He also said that he wanted to thank the Methodist Church who had 60 people out cleaning up the city prior to the community betterment judges came to town. Brown stated that this Saturday will be an electronic recycling at Third and Grand Streets from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM and there is a charge for TVs and monitors. He said that last month 1,179 people attended the Salem TCRC and another 1,574 have gone through the Wellness Center. The Board approved Bill #3243 that repealed Section 2-129 of Article III, Division 6 of the code of ordinances that eliminated the power of the Public Work Director position; and approved Bill #3244 that amends Section 2-124 and 2-128 of Article III, Division 6 of the code of ordinances that sets the duties for the Public Works Director. Police Chief Keith Steelman recommended that Halloween Trick or Treat hours be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM within the city of Salem and the board approved the recommendation. Mayor Brown then discussed having an electric rate study for the city and the board agreed that a request for qualifications from firms would need to be done. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

The Department of Conservation will be holding their surplus equipment sale on Saturday, October 15^th starting at 10:00 in the morning at the Salem facility on Highway 32-72 West. Pre-registration will be held on Friday, October 14^th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on the day of the sale beginning at 7:30. Items in the sale  may be viewed on Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This year, there are some new Missouri Department of Conservation public auction procedures  being implemented. They include cash and cashier’s checks will be accepted for payment of items without presentation of buyer identification. Also, Master Card and Visa debit cards will be accepted for payment only with presentation of a valid driver license as identification. Master Card, Visa, and Discover credit cards will be accepted for payment only with presentation of the buyer’s valid driver license as identification. The Department of Conservation will accept a personal check along with presentation of a valid driver license as identification, but the title to the vehicle, outboard motor, trailer, or boat will be held until the check clears the bank. If the item is a tractor or heavy piece of equipment, the item will be held until the check clears the bank. Dealers must present a copy of their dealer certificate and a valid driver license as identification.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released arrest reports for Dent County. On Sunday, October 2^nd at 1:05 in the afternoon, 39-year old Donald Barton of Boss was arrested and charged with felony cultivation of marijuana. He also had an Iron County warrant out for his arrest for felony distribution. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. On Saturday, October 8^th at 1:44 early in the morning, 26-year old John Hoodenpyle of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to register a motor vehicle, and no seat belt. He was then released.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Thayer Lady Bobcats tonight at the SHS Gym. It will be Senior Night between the JV and Varsity contests. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com starting at about 7:00.

Alex Pietrangelo and Jason Arnott each notched a goal and an assist as the St. Louis Blues took a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames. Andy McDonald recorded two helpers and Jaroslav Halak stopped 15 shots as the Blues recorded their first victory of the season.  St. Louis starts a four-game road trip on Thursday at Dallas after playing its first two games of the season at home.

Albert Pujols was a hitting machine Monday night in Milwaukee, going 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored to help the Cardinals crush the Brewers, 12-3, in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series. Pujols had a homer and three doubles for St. Louis, which bounced back from a 9-6 loss on Sunday. Nick Punto added two runs batted in for the Cardinals, who are back in this round for the 10th time in team history. St. Louis starter Edwin Jackson gave up two runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. Lance Lynn (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the fifth to pick up the win. Game 3 will be held Wednesday night.

St. Louis Rams signed wide receiver Nick Miller and cornerback Brian Jackson on Monday. The moves came at the same time St. Louis placed wide receiver Danny Amendola and cornerback Bradley Fletcher on injured reserve.

Funeral services for Bobby Bryan Young of Salem, age 78, will be held today at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edward Duncan of Salem, age 77, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Richard Lee McWhorter of Fulton, formerly of St. James, age 59, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Wednesday. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
