The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday night. After the minutes were approved from the previous meeting and bills were reviewed, there was a discussion on the 2011 budget, which is still in work. The signature card was updated for check signing to reflect new board member Mike Godi. Reimbursements for the month of August were reviewed and there were a total of 29 calls made in September that brings the year-to-date total to 282 calls. In old business, propane bids were reviewed by the board with 2 bidders, Chilton Oil Company @ $1.75 / gallon and Titan @ $1.59 / Gallon. The motion was made to accept the Titan bid, and the motion carried all for with 1 abstention. Strategic Planning was tabled as more information was needed but it is progressing, and the garage doors should be installed this week. The board discussed the completion of the meeting / training room and approved a quote of $2,607.97 for carpet from Lansing Carpet Plus. The board reviewed quotes for cabinets for the meeting room and they approved the bid from David Richmond to complete the cabinets for $3,856. The roof situation was discussed in great detail. The Real-Tek Company is still working on it but have had no results as of yet. It has been discussed that money would be refunded for the original roof repair. The roof has to be repaired before the fall rain and winter months.  The board approved a previous quote from Ferranto’s Roofing for $3,900 to repair roof. In new business, inventory is still in progress. The board discussed Leadership and Management and set goals for the 2011 year. Chief Nash then discussed problems on Truck 80 and Engine 81. These will be taken for repair. Chief Nash presented the board a donation check of $1,500 from Salem Wood Products. This check is in appreciation of the work that the district does. The board, district and Firefighters are all extremely appreciative of the donation from Salem Wood Products and it will be used to better the district for all the patrons.  The board then set the date for the next scheduled meeting, for November 2^nd @ 6:00 PM at the Dent County Fire Protection District building. The meeting was then adjourned.Eleven local volunteers, including two youth, who have served the Meramec Region will be honored for their community service efforts on Tuesday, November 9^th, during the Meramec Regional Planning Commission’s 2010 Annual Dinner celebration at Linn State Technical College in Linn. The event will be held in the college’s new 84,000 square feet state-of-the-art Vehicle and Power Center. Some of those to be recognized by MRPC for their community contributions and volunteer efforts include Betty Frink of Steelville, nominated by Franky Todd, at large commissioner for seniors; Jay Anderson of Salem, nominated by Salem Mayor Gary Brown; Adam Birdsong of Rolla, nominated by Doolittle Mayor Paul Smith; Jim and Diane Boulware of Salem, nominated by Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles; and in the youth category, Lane Howard of Lecoma, nominated by Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles. The Eugene E. Northern award, the highest honor given by MRPC for volunteerism and community service, will also be named at the dinner. The public is invited to attend. The evening will begin with a tour of Linn State Technical College’s Vehicle and Power Center, the site of the Annual Dinner at 4:30, reception from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., featuring a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, open bar and exhibits. Dinner will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and will be prepared by Argyle Catering. The program and awards presentation will follow the dinner and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. David Kerr, director of the Missouri Department of Economic development, will be the guest speaker and will share information on the department’s efforts to develop a strategic economic development plan for the state, an effort that has involved several leaders from the Meramec Region. Do you have old tires beside the garage? Wondering what to do with that old computer and that television that are piled in the basement? There’s finally an answer. Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the City of Salem and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will offer a tire and electronics collection on Saturday, October 16^th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the utility/construction department’s parking lot at corner of Third and Grand Streets in Salem. The event is hosted by the City of Salem. Hard drives, printers, phones, VCRs, microwaves and most other electronics may be dropped off free of charge. Fees will be charged for televisions and monitors. Televisions will cost $5 for households and $10 for businesses. Each computer monitor will cost $5. Fees will also be charged for tires. Passenger tires will be $1.50 each; truck tires will be $5 each; and tractor tires will be $10 each. Tires from businesses are not accepted. You must unload the items yourself. The collection is open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties. The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste District is using its own grant program, funded through landfill user tipping fees, to sponsor these collections. MRPC is working with Midwest Recycling Center of Crystal City and Park Hills to recycle electronics, and tires will be recycled into tire-derived fuel. The solid waste management district will also have educational information available at the collection that will help residents deal with other types of waste, including household hazardous waste. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4^th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award. Criteria, eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office located at 200 S. Main St. or requested by e-mail from chamber@salemmo.com.
