The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board approved a request from the Grace Community Church to close the 600 block of Water Street on October 15th for a church fellowship event from 3:00 to 8:00. They also approved the request from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce to close Fourth Street between Highway 19 and Washington Street on November 10th from 5:00 to 8:00 for the holiday Open House festivities. Richard Swank then addressed the board and asked that something be done about the speeding vehicle traffic at Center and Park Street. He said there is a four way stop there, but virtually no one stops and there are 13 young children in that area that play. Police Chief Clifford Jadwin said that the police would survey the area and issue tickets to violators. Don Shipley and Gary Larson from the Dent County Fall Festival Association Board asked the board for some assistance with the large water bill they have received from the city since July.

The July bill was $913, the August bill was $3,759 and the September bill was $4,135. They have repaired the leak that they say could have possibly been done by a city mower for the Independence Day celebration, but can't afford these high bills. The city has already put them on a payment plan, but will look into seeing if something else can be done at the next meeting. Larson also asked the board to give him in writing exactly, the areas that the board needs to cut away from the old festival grounds so that he can present it at the next board meeting and the work can be done. The board approved the installation of the digital sign for the Salem Freedom Activity Center, and the replacing of the bulbs at the digital sign at the Highway 32-72 and 19 junction from Missouri Neon Sign Company for $2,235.30. They approved the purchase of six 8-foot tables from Automated Business Systems for the city hall at a cost of $570, and they approved the bid from Vandevanter Engineering of Fenton for the Al Brown Lift Station, pump and accessories for $20,296.00. The city will install the lift station and pump. Alderman Bill Riley then asked about the gate at the city park and it has not yet been installed. Mayor Gary Brown said they hope to have that completed in a couple of weeks. Riley also said that there have been more complaints about the language and nudity at the skateboard park, and Chief Jadwin suggests that the police close the skateboard park at 8:00 during the winter to see if that will stop the problem. Alderman Jim McDaniels asked about the city park grant and Brown said that DNR has been contacted and should be here by the end of the month to inspect the project. McDaniels also asked about the generator for the city hall and Brown said that holes have been drilled for the electric and a concrete pad for the generator should be poured this week. McDaniels asked City Attorney Mark Weaver about extending the city limits to the hospital and Weaver said that couldn't be done unless the statute had changed and he will check on that. McDaniels also added that the city sent a chipper and two men to help St. James after the tornado hit a couple weeks ago. Mayor Gary Brown reported that city received a check from the insurance company for $60,000 for the lightning damage to Well #2 from this time last year, and that he is looking into an Apprentice Line Worker Program offered through the Missouri Public Utility Alliance that trains linemen on site at a cost of $1,370 per person for members. The city is not a member. Brown also discussed the Monday morning meeting with the Dent County Commissioners, the MRPC and city to discuss the draft FEMA Hazard Mitigation. Alderman Riley said that he did not want the city to be involved in this especially if the county would be dragging the city into it, which he didn't even know if the county was for or against the idea. Alderman McDaniels also thought it would be a bad idea. Riley wanted to make a motion that the city not be involved in the program, but since the item was not on the agenda, it will be brought up at the next meeting on Monday night. The board approved to review an ordinance to change the name of Alberta Drive to Red Bud Lane, approved the Halloween hours of 6:00 to 8:00 on October 31st and this year McArthur Street will remain open to traffic, and they approved the bills. The board then went into closed session to discuss real estate and litigation.

The National League Championship Series begins tonight in New York with the Mets taking on the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets blasted their way to a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Division Series, while the Cardinals were pushed to four games by San Diego before advancing. St. Louis is in the NLCS for a third straight year. These two teams met in the NLCS in 2000 with the Mets winning in five games. Jeff Weaver gets the start for St. Louis in the opener versus Tom Glavine. You can hear the game on KSMO starting at 6:55 with the Dugout Show with the game starting at 7:15.

Nate Robertson joined the win parade Tuesday night, tossing five scoreless frames as Detroit's Cinderella ride reached McAfee Coliseum and continued with a 5-1 triumph over Oakland in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. Robertson (1-1) scattered six hits and three walks while striking out four, including three in a row to stifle an Athletics threat in the bottom of the fourth. Fernando Rodney, Joel Zumaya and Todd Jones completed the victory. Detroit pitchers combined to coax an ALCS record four double plays and held the Athletics to 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. While Robertson showed the stuff postseason legends are made of, Barry Zito (1-1) did not rise to the occasion. The southpaw was pummeled for five runs on seven hits with three walks in 3 2/3 frames. The second game of this series will be tonight.

New York Yankees manager Joe Torre announced at a Tuesday press conference that he would return to the bench for the 2007 season. Amid wide speculation that he would be fired, Torre, who has one year remaining on his contract, made it clear that he wants to manage the All-Star caliber club. The Yankees captured their ninth consecutive AL East crown, but New York was embarrassed by the Detroit Tigers 3-1 in the ALDS. Torre just completed his 11th season as New York's skipper, the longest uninterrupted tenure of any Yankee manager since Casey Stengel's 12-year run from 1949-60. Torre managed the Cardinals back in the late 80's.
