The Dent County Commission met Thursday morning for their regular meeting at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6070, 6110, 6210, 6320 and 6575 while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 5460. Purcell said materials would be added to Dent County Roads 2480 and 5450 while brush would be cut on county road 5630. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Road 2370 while materials would be added to and grading done on county road 4290. He also said the back-up generator at the Oak Grove Baptist Church was tested Tuesday and everything was good. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported he attended the Industrial Development Authority meeting Wednesday night and Bill Phipps from CenturyLink was in attendance to discuss the Connect America Fund that would expand broadband Internet access. This program is being launched through the FCC and if approved, would provide CenturyLink 70 million dollars a year to expand Internet services. Currently, it is a five-year plan, but there has been some discussion of extending the program to 10 years, and it would begin in 2015 to provide service to customers with download speeds of 10 MB with an upload speed of 1 MB. Phipps said that currently 93% of CenturyLink customers have access to broadband Internet Services. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said her office and the commission reviewed the Dent County Collector’s monthly financial activities and they balanced on all collections and abatements. Curley said if you have had a name or address change, please stop by or call her office and update your voter registration before November 4th. Absentee voting continues at the clerk’s office and her office will be open on Saturday, November 1st from 8:00 until noon for absentee voting. The last day to mail out an absentee ballot will be October 29th. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the sales tax money just received by the county in October. Year-to-date, the county’s general Revenue Fund and the LEST Fund are up around $55,000 each from last year and that comes out to just over an 8.6% increase in sales tax receipts. At the last meeting, Beth Frizzell from the Senior Citizens Service Fund would like to amend their budget to include $5,000 in Grant Revenues and approve $5,000 for Grant Expense. The Commission approved to make the budget available to the public on October 14th and the budget hearing has been set for October 27th at 10:00 in the morning. Emergency Management Director Brad Nash came in and reported the civil defense radio needed to be replaced due to the power supply. The total cost to replace the radio would be $1,850 and the commissioners approved to purchase a new radio to replace the old one. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be next Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 as the courthouse will be closed on Monday for Columbus Day.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Thursday, October 2nd at 2:50 in the afternoon, an officer was conducting a narcotics investigation regarding the sale of methamphetamine. During the investigation, the officer located a 43-year old Salem male who was in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was taken into custody for unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Also related to the investigation a vehicle stolen from Rolla, Missouri was recovered in the 700 block of William Avenue. On Friday, October 3rd at 2:08 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 600 block of East Missouri Highway 32 in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed a 62-year old Salem female had assaulted a 55-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, October 4th at 12:14 in the early morning, an officer transported a 36-year old Salem male to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in lieu of a mental commitment order. At 12:31 that same morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 35-year old St. James female for driving while intoxicated, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was issued summonses to appear in court and released. Minutes later at 12:48, an officer responded to the 1600 block of Odom Drive in reference to an assault. Investigation of the report revealed 53-year old Salem female had assaulted a 37-year old Salem female. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same day at 3:20 pm, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of William Avenue in reference to a gunshot. That investigation revealed a 65-year old Salem male had fired a shot from a pistol. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for unlawful use of a weapon. He was incarcerated pending a warrant.

The Blue Oval Rally, formerly known as the Current River Cobra Rally, will be in Salem this Saturday from 9:00 in the morning until 6:00 in the afternoon for a “Show and Shine” style car show around the Dent County Courthouse square. Participants can bring their special interest vehicle to the square, hang out and have fun. There is no judging and only three trophies are given: the Police Chiefs Choice, the Mayor’s Choice and the Marching Blue Band’s choice. The show area will break up around noon for a lunch break and then participants can regroup at the Crossroads Shopping Center parking lot to begin the cruise to Current River. There will be scenic stops at Akers Ferry, Round Spring Park and at Alley Spring. The cost to participate is $25 per car and that includes the show and cruise. Money raised from this event will be donated to the Salem Tiger Marching Blue Band Parent Association. For more info, contact Randy at 816-719-5157. A representative from the Central Missouri Agency on Aging will be available to assist during the Med D open enrollment period.  The Salem Community Center @ the Armory Computer Lab will be used to help participants review their current plan and shop for the Part D plan that best meets your personal needs and financial situation. Appointments are available on: Thursday, October 23rd, Friday, October 24th then again on Thursday, November 6th and Friday, November 7th and the final one will be held on Thursday, November 13th. The 2014 Trees and Trains Exhibit will again be at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Street in Salem and will run from November 24th through December 24th this year. Continuing the 50th Anniversary celebration, Ozark National Scenic Riverways will bring the Ozark past to life during the Haunting in the Hills event to be held Saturday, October 11th, 2014 at Alley Spring.  The FREE event features folkway demonstrations, re-enactments, hands-on activities, food vendors, and traditional dancing, bluegrass and folk music. Local skilled crafts people will demonstrate from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Experience Ozark pioneer folkways and traditions such as basket weaving, bobbin lace making, spinning, woodcarving, blacksmithing, chair caning and the making of household supplies of soap, candles, rope, brooms, and apple butter.  Learn about Ozark history through the Fur Trapping Rendezvous,exhibited by the Ozark Long Rifle Association. Then when night falls, a very different setting emerges during the Tales from Ozark’s Dark Side on Saturday evening, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.  Illuminated pathways will guide your way through Ozark legends, folktales, mysteries, superstitions, and natural wonders for spellbinding age-old storytelling. Visitors are encouraged to bring along flashlights.  Tales and legends include Ozark Tales and Superstitions, the search for the Ozark Karkaghne Monster, the struggles of the Civil War: one woman’s true story, and shallow graves and lives remembered in Stone:  A Graveyard Tour. The Salem Lady Tigers Softball Game for Friday was postponed. District play was held Saturday at Union.

UPDATE: The Lady Tigers lost to Sullivan in eight innings by the score of 5-4 to end their season.

The Salem Tiger Football team will host Mountain View/Liberty tonight at 7:00. Salem is 2-5 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The game will also be filmed by Fidelity Local 6. (Salem lost 41-6.)

Rick Nash netted a pair of goals, including a tie-breaking score with just 1:50 remaining that lifted the New York Rangers to a 3-2 season-opening victory over the St. Louis Blues. Jaden Schwartz had a gial and an assist and Brian Elliott came up with 22 saves in the loss. The Blues will host the Flames on Saturday and you can hear the first period on KSMO at 5:30.

The Kansas City Royals will be in Baltimore tonight to face the Orioles in Game One of the ALCS at 7:07. James Shields will take the mound for the Royals while Chris Tillman will be pitching for Baltimore. (UPDATE: Royals won Game 1 in the 10 innings, 8-6, and won Game 2 by the score of 6-4. They lead the ALCS, 2 games to none.)

The St. Louis Cardinals will host the San Francisco Giants on Saturday in Game One of the NLCS at Busch Stadium at 7:07. Adam Wainwright will pitch for St. Louis opposite the Giant’s Madison Bumgarner. (UPDATE: Cards lost, 3-0. Play tonight at 6:32 in Game 2)

The 23rd ranked Missouri Tigers will host 13th ranked Georgia on Saturday. Missouri is 4-1 on the year and you can hear it on KSMO starting at 10:00 in the morning on KSMO. (UPDATE: Missouri lost, 34-0.)

Funeral services for Glen “Fudd” Eaton of Steelville, age 77, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

A memorial service mass for Carolyn Ann (Deeken) Cahill will be at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Riverways Pregnancy Center.

Funeral services for J.C. McCarthy, Sr. of Steelville will be Tuesday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Alan Dewayne Skaggs of Salem, age 40, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dewayne Skaggs Memorial Fund at the Bank of Salem.
