A reception for Clayton E. Lucas II, the newly appointed City Administrator will be held tonight at the Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their regular meeting following that reception at the TCRC. After approval of the agenda and during the hearing of persons, the Salem United Methodist Church and the Grace Community Church will be requesting temporary closing of streets for upcoming church events. The Board will then address bids for a tone wire rope heist. After approval of the consent agenda, there will be reports from the Director of Public Works & Engineering; the City Administrator and Mayor Gary Brown will also address issues concerning the City of Salem. During the introduction and reading of bills, the board will hear Bill #3243 which is an ordinance to repeal section 2-129 of Article III, Division 6 of the Code of the City of Salem; and Bill #3244 which is an ordinance to amend Sections 2-124 and 2-128 of Article III, Division 6 of the Code of the City of Salem will be presented. In new and miscellaneous business, the Board will set the Halloween Hours in the city and discuss an electric rate study. The Board will then approve bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel and will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel and litigation. The reception and regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman are open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving a stolen vehicle and items stolen from a vehicle. On Monday, October 3^rd at 11:30 in the morning, an officer spoke with a victim in reference to a stolen vehicle. The victim stated that between 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 2^nd and 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3^rd, a 1991 Black soft top Geo Tracker with green tracker lettering was stolen from a residence located in the 700 block of Dent County Road 5130. Also taken were a beat compound bow, a collector tree stand, and a Blackberry Touch phone. The value of the items stolen is $600. At 2:12 that afternoon, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department had a victim walk in to the station to report a burglary that occurred in the 500 block of Dent County Road 5130. The victim stated that when he went to his truck to retrieve money he had left the night before, he noticed the money and other items missing. Anyone with any information regarding these reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department at 729-4231.

The State Homeland Security Advisory Committee (HSAC) approved eight local agencies for funding, totaling $67,552.93 for the FY 2008 State Homeland Security Reallocation Grant. The Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee, which is comprised of representatives from Crawford, Dent, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Laclede counties, recommended that reallocated 2008 grant monies be awarded to FY 2010 unfunded grant applicant projects, rather than accept new grant applications. The Region I HSOC recommended and the state HSAC has approved the following projects for funding: The Phelps County Sheriff’s Department for 15 portable radios for a total of $23,250; the Leasburg Fire for three portable radios and four pagers, which totals $4,035.45; the Edgar Springs Rural Fire Department for five mobile radios and five portable radios at a total of $11,289.94; and the St. James Police Department for one mobile radio at a cost of $1,534.25. This is the sixth year that a local committee has made funding recommendations, a task previously handled by SEMA staff. After the local HSOC made the recommendations at the April 21^st, meeting, each agency submitted an application that MRPC staff collected to prepare the final application and submit it to the Department of Public Safety Missouri Office of Homeland Security by the June 6^th deadline. The State Homeland Security Advisory Committee granted its approval in July. As was the case last year, MRPC will be responsible for the procurement of approved items. Under a contract with SEMA, MRPC acts as the HSOC’s administrative entity and fiscal agent. All items will be distributed by October 31^st.

Ben Adams ran for 144 yards and a score as the Salem Tigers beat the Cabool Bulldogs Friday night 20-13. Johnnie Boyd added 119 yards and a touchdown on the ground as Salem moves to 4-3 on the year. The Tigers open up District play this Friday, as they will host Owensville starting at 7:00.

Prince Fielder and Yuniesky Betancourt both homered during a six-run fifth inning to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 9-6, in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. David Freese hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals, who shocked the baseball world by taking out the 102-win Phillies in the NLDS with a heart-pounding 1-0 win in Game 5 on Friday. The Cardinals got an RBI apiece from Lance Berkman and Matt Holliday. Jaime Garcia (0-2) allowed six runs on six hits over four-plus innings to take the loss. Game 2 of this best-of-seven series is set for tonight at 6:30. St. Louis' Edwin Jackson will be opposed by Shaun Marcum.

David Legwand tallied two goals, one an empty netter, and two assists for the Nashville Predators as they defeated St. Louis, 4-2, in the home opener for the Blues Saturday. Patrik Berglund and Jason Arnott lit the lamp for the Blues, while Jaroslav Halak struggled in net, saving just 12-of-15 shots. The Blues play again this afternoon against Calgary at 1:00 on KSMO.

Collin Klein rushed for 45 yards and three touchdowns and threw for 112 yards, leading No. 20 Kansas State to a 24-17 victory over Missouri Saturday afternoon. James Franklin completed 19-of-35 pass attempts for 214 yards and one interception for the Tigers (2-3, 0-2). He ran 11 times for 46 yards and one score. Henry Josey rushed 12 times for 55 yards and one touchdown, while Michael Egnew snagged eight passes for 73 yards. Mizzou plays Iowa State Saturday.

Steve Breaston's 11-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter Sunday lifted the Kansas City Chiefs to a 28-24 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Breaston caught two touchdown passes from Matt Cassel, who also hooked up with Dwayne Bowe for a couple of scores as the Chiefs (2-3) scored 21 unanswered points to end the game.

The Rams had this week off and will take on Green Bay on Sunday.

Funeral services for Velma Lucile Conway of Birch Tree, age 84, will be held today at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to family.

Funeral services for Bobby Bryan Young of Salem, age 78, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edward Duncan of Salem, age 77, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:00 until service time.

Funeral services for Richard Lee McWhorter of Fulton, formerly of St. James, age 59, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Wednesday. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Patrick Marion Layton of Newburg, age 69, are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
