The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 6220 and 6470, and a crew would be patching various chip and seal roads throughout the district. Commissioner Simpson also reported for District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune who was not in attendance. He said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3060, 3070 and 3150 and material would be hauled to Dent County Road 2110. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting yesterday afternoon in St. James and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that since October 1st, 230 people have registered to vote and the clerk’s office has received 385 requests for absentee ballots. Absentee voting will continued through November 3rd at the Dent County Clerk’s Office, including on Saturday, November 1st.  The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held a special meeting Thursday evening to discuss sidewalk construction and repair, as well as the paving of streets. City Engineer Bill Huffman stated that the city workers could construct sidewalks at a cost of about $3.00 a square foot, and about $12 per lineal foot for curb and guttering. This includes the salaries, benefits, rental of equipment, etc. He said the city could bid the jobs out and that would cost about $9.00 a square foot from a contractor with not much difference in the curb and guttering cost. The board decided to hire two people for concrete work that will not only build new sidewalks such as the one for Askins Street, but repair the many sections of sidewalks throughout the town that need to be repaired. These two new workers are to have their hourly wage come out of the capital  improvement fund while any benefits would have to come from general revenue. An ad will be placed in the paper for the positions. The board agreed that Huffman should have input on who the new two workers will be. The mayor said that budget adjustments would have to be made to cover the additional expenses. The board also asked Huffman to put together a list of his top priority projects so that they can go over it at the next meeting. The board then discussed the paving of streets and everyone agreed that Forest Hills Drive and South Pershing is going to be done. They also budgeted paving on North and South Hickory, and after the first round of paving, there is only about $140,000 left in the budget. The board’s budgeted numbers came from estimates based on $56 per ton. Street Department Supervisor Benny Bryson reported that the cost per ton of asphalt as of Thursday was at $80 per ton. He said that the asphalt company expects that cost to decline in the next 60 days. City Engineer Bill Huffman also reported that work is going to have to be done next Spring on North Pershing so the board may want to hold some money back for that project. A petition had been submitted for the paving of Roberts Street, but since the road has not been annexed into the city, the board thought that paving should wait until the annexation can be completed. The board made no definitive decision except to get as much work as they can get done with the money budgeted. The meeting then adjourned.

The evening will begin with dinner followed by the Awards Ceremony. All 4-H families are asked to bring two covered dishes and table service. Meat, bread and drinks will be provided.
