The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00. During the hearing of persons, Martin Watts of Ozark River Portable Sinks will update the Board on the current status of their business, and Sherry Lea from the Council for a Healthy Dent County will update the Board on a submitted grant proposal. In bids, the City requested sealed bids for a split load of utility poles: Class 2, 30-foot length and Class 2, 45-foot length; and the City requested sealed bids for three 48-foot x 12-foot liquid depth weir troughs with adjustable V-notches to be used at the Waste Water Treatment Facility. The bids will be presented by City Administrator Clayton Lucas. He will then update the Board other items concerning the city. Alderman Kenneth Nash, Jerry Randell, Hayden Powell and Philip Giacomelli will discuss items concerning the city before Mayor Gary Brown gives his report. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills and Resolutions, Bill #3264 will be read which is an ordinance required to annex the property known as 1504 Roberts Street, owned by Scott and Wilma McFarland. Their annex request was approved by the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Board of Alderman. Resolution #27-2012, a resolution required in order for the Mayor to sign any agreements concerning the grant through Delta Regional Authority, will also be presented. In new and miscellaneous business, City of Salem Chief of Police Keith Steelman is requesting the Board set the hours of 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for trick-or-treating for Halloween on October 31st. Waste Corporation is requesting approval from the Board to set the Fall Clean-Up Week for October 15th through October 19th. The Board will then vote to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing real estate, litigation, contracts and personnel. The meeting of the Board of Alderman is open to the public.
An accident occurred on Monday at 7:35 in the afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 49 one mile north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report a 1994 Dodge Ram, driven by 51 year-old Timothy M. Painter of Beaufort, traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a tree, and overturned. Painter suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by the Phelps County Ambulance. A passenger in the Dodge, 56 year-old Vicky L. Payne of Davisville, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan by Quad County Ambulance. The Dodge was totaled and was towed by Blackie’s Towing. According to the report neither Painter or Payne were wearing safety restraints.
The 49th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby at Montauk State Park was held this past weekend. Proceeds from registrations totaled $3,090.00; bake sale and auction raised $1,668.00; the sale of hearts, kids games, souvenir shirts, face painting, the Wilmer Wisdom donations and the Cruise-in Car Show raised $4,529.00 with a total of $9,307.00 in proceeds going to the American Heart Association. There were 769 tags sold on Saturday, another 499 sold on Sunday which brought the total tags sold to 1,268. There were a total of 77-tagged fish caught and 16 lunkers were also caught during the derby. The Men’s Heaviest Fish was caught by Bill King weighing in at 7 pounds; the Women’s Heaviest Fish caught by Barbara King weighing 6 pounds; and the Heaviest Brown caught by Doyle Hood of Licking weighing in a 4 pounds. Coming in 1st Place for the Kids Heaviest Stringer Contest was Gregg Headrick of Salem with a 8 pound stringer; 2nd Place was Patrick Potts of Licking with a stringer weighing in at 8 pounds; and in 3rd Place was Michael Cramer with a stringer weighing in at 4 pounds.
The 34th Annual Old Iron Works Day’s will be held on October 13th and 14th at the beautiful Maramec Spring Park located six miles southeast of St. James on Highway 8. Crafts will be demonstrated continuously during the two-day event. Displays, music and crosscut sawing will be ongoing activities each day. This big event gets started at noon on Saturday, October 13th. The Open Range Bluegrass Band will be performing from 1:00 to 2:00 and 4:00 to 5:00. The Ozark Spirit Cloggers will be on stage from 2:00 to 2:30 and 3:30 to 4:00. The Misty Mountain Bluegrass Band will perform from 2:30 to 3:30. Kid’s Games will be from 2:00 to 4:00. On Sunday, October 14th, activities open at noon. The Misty Mountain Bluegrass Band will be on stage from 1:00 to 2:00 and again from 4:00 to 5:00. The Ozark Spirit Cloggers will be performing from 2:00 to 2:30 and again from 3:30 to 4:00. The Open Range Bluegrass Band will be performing from 2:30 to 3:30. The children can have fun at the Kid’s Games between 2:00 and 4:00. There will be plenty of good country food and beverages on hand. That’s at the Meramec Spring Park and the cost is $15 a carload. Roadwork continues in our area this week. In Dent County, roadway maintenance will take place today through Thursday on Route BB between Route K and the end of state maintenance. Roadway maintenance will start today and continue through next week on Route DD between Route H and the end of state maintenance. In Phelps and Crawford Counties, roadway maintenance will take place on Wednesday and Thursday on Route YY between Highway 68 and Route M. Roadway resurfacing will take place on Eastbound I-44 between mile markers 179 and 185 in Phelps County in the overnight hours. The Salem Lady Tiger volleyball team got their first win of the year as they beat Plato in two sets on Monday. Salem will be in Willow Springs tonight to play the Lady Bears at 6:00.
Carlos Beltran belted two of four home runs for the St. Louis Cardinals as the defending World Series champions evened their National League Division Series with the Washington Nationals with a 12-4 Game 2 rout at Busch Stadium. Allen Craig and Daniel Descalso also went deep to help the Cardinals rebound from a 3-2 loss in Sunday's opener. Beltran and Jon Jay each knocked in three runs on two hits in the win, with Craig finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Descalso contributing a pair of RBI as part of a 2-for-4 performance. Lance Lynn was credited with the victory after striking out five in three innings in relief of an ailing Jaime Garcia, who was removed after just two innings due to an apparent injury to his shoulder. The Cardinals will travel to Washington to face the Nationals in Game 3 of the NLDS on Wednesday. You’ll be able to hear that game on KSMO Radio, starting with the pre-game show at 11:32.
John Davidson's days with the St. Louis Blues have come to a close. In a joint press conference, both he and new Blues owner Tom Stillman announced that the one-time broadcaster turned front-office success will move on from the organization to pursue other opportunities. Davidson came to the Blues in 2006 along with then-owner Dave Checketts. He helped keep the Blues competitive and was awarded the 2009 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his contributions to broadcasting.

Funeral services for Arthur Dale Schrader of Salem, age 72, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
