The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their report for the month of September. During the month, there were 76 9-1-1 calls of which all were responded to with eight of the calls being prank calls. The Department served 175 papers consisting of 117 civil papers, 50 criminal papers and eight notices to vacate, plus they served 21 felony warrants and 12 misdemeanor warrants. During the month, there were six drug arrests and 16 domestic disturbance calls were addressed. The Sheriff’s Department issued 28 tickets, conducted 56 traffic stops, made five DWI arrests, and assisted on 20 traffic accidents. For the month of September, the Sheriff’s Department investigated three burglaries, one assault, 11 thefts, five property damage reports, one crime against a child, and four trespassing or property line disputes. The Department spent 12 hours working in court, 27.75 hours testifying and 24 hours in training. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department handled a total of 212 calls during the month and made two community policing appearances. In the Dent County Jail Report for September, there were 44 prisoners incarcerated for the month with an average daily total of 13. There were two transfers to or from other departments and three transfers to a mental facility. During the month of September, the sheriff’s department drove a total of 15,567 miles on criminal investigations, patrolling and prisoner transportation.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold a special meeting tonight at 6:30 to discuss sidewalks and streets at the city hall council chambers. The meting tonight is open to the public. The meeting was called by Mayor Gary Brown at the request of Aldermen Riley.

The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission will be held tonight at the MRPC office located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James beginning at 7:30 pm. After approval of the consent agenda, Molly Malone of Verkamp and Malone CPA’s will present the MRPC’s audit for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2008, which includes the MRB, MREPC, RLF & IRP. MoDot and its planning partner have developed a list of transportation priorities and the price tag is nearly $1 billion per year for 20 years and this is money that MoDOT doesn’t have. Roger Schwartze, MoDOT district 5 engineer will seek input from the Board on whether MoDOT’s plan is sound and whether the priorities are appropriate and gather input on what transportation users want. Connie Willman will report on grants submitted and funded since the last meeting along with application deadlines and funding availability. Tammy Snodgrass will report on solid waste activities and on the Homeland Security Oversight Committee activities. Kraig Bone will report on MREPC activities, Tom Klebba will report on business loan activities, and Donald Dodd will report on the Transportation Advisory Committee meeting. Connie Willman will then report on the Meramec Community Enhacement Corporation meeting held September 24th, T.R. Dudley will report on workforce development activities and Chairman Antolak and Director Richard Caverder will report on issues of interest in their reports. The regular monthly meeting of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission is open to the public.

The Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host this year’s "A Haunting in the Hills" on Saturday, October 11th and Sunday, October 12th at Alley Spring near Eminence. The event will have two full days of exciting activities as well as the usual nighttime storytelling. Daytime activities will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, as scenes from the past come to life with European fur traders, early Ozark settlers, and the Alley community circa 1900. Demonstrations will include Native American finger weaving, blacksmithing, coopering, soap making, shingle riving, rope making, wool spinning, candle making, basket weaving and much more. Musical entertainment will be provided by talented local musicians from 1:00-3:00 p.m. each day. Children will be able to attend school in an authentic one-room schoolhouse, and play with toys and games popular over 100 years ago! The patriarch of the old "Alley community", the Alley Spring Roller Mill, will also spring to life during this event! After sunset on Saturday evening a very different setting will emerge. Candlelit pathways will guide your way through Ozark legends, folktales, mysteries, superstitions, and natural wonders as the age-old tradition of storytelling comes back to life. Beginning at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night only, get ready to be “spellbound” with several very different storytelling venues. Visitors are urged to bring along lawn chairs and flashlights, especially for the Saturday evening activities. A food vendor will be available on-site both days. “A Haunting in the Hills" is a free event and for more information, please contact the Ozark National Scenic Riverways at (573) 226-3945.

The “S-CLUB” sponsored Macho-Mania Boys Volleyball game will be held tonight in the High School gym. The first game will start at 7:00 pm, the sophomore’s, coached by Kristy Bermudez and Alayna Sellers will take on the juniors coached by Rachel Sirois and Jenna Cartwright. The winners will then play the seniors coached by Hannah Kettner and Jessica Brand, for this year’s braggin rights. Come on out and supports the Tigers. Admission is $1.00 for all.

 The National League Championship Series begins tonight between Los Angeles and Philadelphia and will air on Fox-TV. The American League Championship Series begins tomorrow between Tampa Bay and Boston It will be broadcast on the TBS Network.

The Salem Football Tigers will be at Houston tomorrow night to face the Tigers in their final SCA game. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and www.ksmoradio.com starting at 6:25 with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt. Salem enters the game with a 5-1 record and 4-1 in the SCA.

The St. Louis Blues begin their 2008-2009 season tomorrow night against the Nashville Predators. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Tiger Football.

The Missouri Football Tigers face Oklahoma State Saturday night at 7:00 Faurot Field. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:00 with the pregame show.

Funeral services for Bessie L. Chamberlain of Salem, age 78, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial service for Rosabel Belt of Rolla, age 92, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James a Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or Golden Age Center.

Funeral services for Eula Irene Shelton of Salem, age 77, will be held Friday at 11:00 at Grace Community Church. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

A memorial mass for Ksenia Kimberly Bryan of St. James, age 16, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be held Friday from 3:30 to 8:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the Immaculate Conception Church with a Prayer Service Friday at 3:30. Memorials may be made to the Ksenia Bryan Scholarship Fund at the Phelps County Bank in St. James. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
