The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that conditions are too dry for grading, so the District 1 crew would be cutting brush on Dent County Road 622, hauling gravel to the crusher and catching up on routine maintenance. Commissioner Simpson also wanted to mention that District 1 crew members helped haul the old computer monitors and keyboards from the courthouse to the city’s recycling collection this past weekend. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that even though conditions are dry, grading would be done on Dent County Roads 212 and 213 and brush would be cut in the Lenox area. Tune also said that crew members would be hauling rock to the crusher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that on Friday he attended the Open House for American Tool Works in Jadwin and he plans on attending a Central Region Workforce Investment Board meeting in Boonville on Tuesday. Skiles had a few questions about the counties budget concerning the Road and Bridge Fund and the General Revenue Fund, due to the fact that expenses for the Road and Bridge Department had been paid out of General Revenue. Simpson and Tune said that the Road and Bridge Fund needs to have a surplus of money in it at all times in case of a disaster, and by paying the expenses out of the General Revenue Fund, the department would not go over budget and would have enough money in case of an emergency. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she received the tentative outline for the 2008 budget and the Annual Budget Hearing is set for January 24
th. Ted Cunningham, the County Program Director and Livestock Specialist from the Extension Office, came by the meeting to introduce to the Commission the new Community Development Specialist, Sarah Hultine. Cunningham also updated the Commission on the 4-H Program, the Food and Nutrition Program and other areas of the Extension Office and he said that the Dent County Pasture Walk is scheduled for October 23
rd. The location will be announced at a later date. At 10:00 the Commission went into closed session to discuss real estate issues and at 11:00 they met with Judge Seay to talk about office and space needs. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The 44th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby raised a total of $12,813.00 over the past weekend. Funds were derived from cash donations of $725.00, fishing registrations totaled $4,483.00; the store brought in $1,112.50, the bake shop sold $403.00 in merchandise, the auction netted $1,706, memorials accounted for $1,455.00 and all the other events like face-painting, hearts, the slide, shirts and hats and the car show added another $2,928.00. There were 56-tagged fish caught and 42-lunkers were harvested by the fishermen. The daily trout tags sold were 1,163 for Saturday and 916 on Sunday. Last year the trout derby collected $10,665.25. All the proceeds collected are donated to the American Heart Association in memory of the late hatchery manager Rose Holland.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving juveniles, property damage, an accident and a forgery. On September 28th at 8:50 in the evening, a Salem officer observed a 14-year old male juvenile attempting to assault another juvenile. He detained the juvenile for disorderly conduct and released him to his parents. The report will be forwarded to the juvenile officer. On October 1st at 8:29 in the morning, an officer was sent to the 800 block of East Third in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown damaged a 1999 Chevrolet Bluebird school bus belonging to Oak Hill R-I. The damage is estimated at $400. At 8:52 the same morning, an officer was dispatched to the 800 block of South Askins in reference to a traffic accident. Investigation of the accident led to the arrest of a 42-year Salem female for driving while drugged. She was issued a summons for careless and imprudent driving and released pending lab results. On October 2nd at 10:05 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a forgery. The report revealed that person(s) unknown forged checks on two accounts for approximately $1,565. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Dent County Democrat Club will be meeting tonight at 7:00 at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room. The meeting is open to all interested persons.

The Salem 9th Grade Football Team scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to comeback and beat Mountain Grove, 20-16. Mt. Grove scored once in the first quarter and once in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 16-0 lead. Salem came roaring back in the third quarter with Jonathan Hambacker scoring from 6 yards out, and then receiving a 43-yard pass from Ryan Smith to put Salem within 2. Smith added a two-point conversion on the first touchdown, but the second two-point conversion failed. In the fourth quarter, Kevin Presley scored from six yards out to put Salem up for good, 20-16. Salem forced 5 turnovers in the second half including 3 interceptions. Hambacker, Jared Shorey, and Cody Ard all had interceptions while Kevin Presley and Alex Bay both recovered fumbles. Salem was led in rushing by Presley with 18 carries for 69 yards.
The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will travel to Mountain Grove tonight for a key SCA contest. The JV will start things out followed by the varsity contest. Salem is 4-0 in SCA play.
Grady Sizemore led off the game with a homer and it was all downhill from there for Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang, as the Cleveland Indians beat New York, 6-4, winning their American League Division Series in four games and likely causing a shake-up of George Steinbrenner's team. Paul Byrd threw into the sixth inning for the win and Victor Martinez had a two-run single for the Indians, who scored four runs over the first two innings and advanced to the AL Championship Series to play Boston, starting Friday night at Fenway Park.
St. Louis Rams safety Jerome Carter broke a bone in his right foot and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. He broke the fifth metatarsal in his right foot which is about an 8-to-10 week recovery. Carter suffered the injury in Sunday's 34-31 home loss to Arizona. The Rams are 0-5 and are within one loss of their tying their worst start ever.
Nick Folk connected on four field goals, including a game-winning 53-yarder with no time remaining, to help the Dallas Cowboys stun the Buffalo Bills, 25-24, in a wild game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The banged-up Bills intercepted Tony Romo five times, with four of them coming in the first half, and also got a 103-yard kickoff return from Terrence McGee in the third quarter, but couldn't hold on against Dallas (5-0), which scored nine points in the final 20 seconds.

Graveside services for Toni "Patricia" Hall of Tucson, Arizona, age 50, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Boss Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
