The Dent County Commissioners met for their meeting Monday morning at the courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Road 5440, and grading would also be done on county roads 6485 and 6505. He also stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2410 and 2420. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 2159 and 2360, while only grading would be done on county road 4010. He did indicate that brush would be cut on county roads 3220 and 4380. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he has continued to check river access in Dent County and found that the pit toilets have now been locked up at Baptist Camp and at Cedar Grove that will force people who are there to defecate and urinate on the grounds. He said that, in his opinion, instead of trying to minimize the impact of the government shutdown, the National Park Service is trying to maximize its’ impact on the general public. Skiles said that the commission received a letter from Russell Allen, the Chief Juvenile Officer of the 42
nd Judicial District, indicating that the district does not have adequate funds to process new and existing cases and would need an additional $15,000 from the member counties. The additional allocation would be based on a pro-ration of the population of each county to the district and would cost Crawford County $5,250, Dent County $3,300, Iron County $2,250, Reynolds County $1,350 and Wayne County $2,850. Dent County already budgeted $48,918.88 this year after actual expenses in 2012 of $46,989. The commission will get in touch with Mr. Allen wanting more information about the additional monetary request. Preston Kramer from MoDOT and Bonnie Prigge from the MRPC were in attendance to review transportation concerns on local roads from the previous year and see if they should remain on the list. Removed from the list were adding of shoulders on Highway 19 north from Salem, the steep hills on Route H about a quarter of a mile from Salem, a pedestrian overpass on Highway 32 east to the Salem Upper Elementary School and the adding of shoulders on Highway 32-72 East from Salem. Added to the list were sidewalks on the east side of Highway 19 from the Highway 32-72 and 19 junction to the Dent County Firehouse, stoplights at the intersection of Highway 19 and 4
th Street, plus the bridge over Dry Creek and the bridge over Holt Creek, both on Route F. Kramer also says there is a desire to increase public transportation for the area, but he does not have the answer on how to get that accomplished with the lack of funds available. At the last meeting, the commissioners accepted the bid from Rommell Alarm and Lock for $14,521 regarding the security system at the courthouse. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
