The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Bernie English was in attendance and wanted to let the commissioners know that Mike Mills from Pro Energy was going to be at the Wurdack Farm Field Day to discuss the generation of electricity by Bio-Mass that the city of Salem is looking into as well and other areas of southeast Missouri. The Commissioners hope to be able to talk with Mr. Mills, but they plan on attending the funeral of Kegan Chamberlain at 11:00. Because of the funeral, the Dent County Courthouse will be closed from 10:30 until noon today to allow county employees to pay their respects. English also had some questions concerning the accuracy of the Plat Map about the location of a creek that should cross his property line, but the commissioners stated that the map is just a reference tool, not a legal document. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 5600 which is the Turtle Loop, plus roads 6280 and 6283. Purcell went on to say that materials are being added and a culvert is being installed on Dent County Road 4100, and that ditch work is being done to Dent County Road 6230. Purcell told the commission that brush was being cut in Dent County Roads 5015 and 5630. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2010, 4433, 5320 and 5323. Larson reported that the chip and seal on Dent County Road 3010 was being repaired and that a tree was being moved from Dent County Road 4437. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reminded the commission that the courthouse would be closed Monday for Columbus Day and there would not be a Commissioner’s meeting. He said that Commissioners Larson and Purcell would be attending the South Central Counties Commissioners meeting in Licking Wednesday, and he will be attending an MREPC meeting that same day in St. James. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that her office and the Dent County Treasurer balanced for the month of September. She also said that absentee voting is currently going on and the last day to vote absentee will be November 1^st. She also said that the last day to request an absentee ballot to be mailed out is October 27^th, and that the Dent County Clerk’s Office would be open on Saturday, October 30^th from 8:00 AM until noon for absentee voting. At the previous Thursday meeting, the Commissioners talked with Rebecca Friedrich with Davis, Lynn and Moots about the 2007 Federal Grant Award Audit. The firm is now finished with the audit. The Commissioners next meeting will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways will bring the Ozark past to life during the Haunting in the Hills event on Saturday, October 9^th and Sunday, October 10^th. The annual free event features two days of folkway demonstrations, reenactments, music, hands-on activities, food, and a Saturday evening filled with memorable tales and legends. Events go from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The talented local bluegrass band “Friends Pickin” will provide musical entertainment from 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Food, beverages, and snacks will be available by community vendors on the event grounds. When night falls on Saturday evening, a very different setting will emerge. Illuminated pathways will guide your way through six venues of Ozark legends, folktales, mysteries, superstitions, and natural wonders for spellbinding age-old storytelling. Storytelling runs from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring along flashlights. Alley Mill is located six miles west of Eminence on Highway 106. Do you have old tires beside the garage? Wondering what to do with that old computer and that television that are piled in the basement? There’s finally an answer. Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the City of Salem and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will offer a tire and electronics collection on Saturday, October 16^th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the utility/construction department’s parking lot at corner of Third and Grand Streets in Salem. The event is hosted by the City of Salem. Hard drives, printers, phones, VCRs, microwaves and most other electronics may be dropped off free of charge. Fees will be charged for televisions and monitors. Televisions will cost $5 for households and $10 for businesses. Each computer monitor will cost $5. Fees will also be charged for tires. Passenger tires will be $1.50 each; truck tires will be $5 each; and tractor tires will be $10 each. Tires from businesses are not accepted. You must unload the items yourself. The collection is open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties. The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste District is using its own grant program, funded through landfill user tipping fees, to sponsor these collections. MRPC is working with Midwest Recycling Center of Crystal City and Park Hills to recycle electronics, and tires will be recycled into tire-derived fuel. The solid waste management district will also have educational information available at the collection that will help residents deal with other types of waste, including household hazardous waste. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4^th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award. Criteria, eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office located at 200 S. Main St. or requested by e-mail from chamber@salemmo.com.
