It’s October, when leaves blaze yellow, orange and red. Foresters with the Missouri Department of Conservation say this should be a good year for autumn color. Warm, sunny days and cool nights favor the development of brilliant foliage. Trees stop producing green pigment when nighttime lows fall into the 50s and 60s, and sugars stored in leaves undergo chemical changes that turn them every outrageous shade in the rainbow. Fall color almost always peaks around October 15
th in Missouri, and this year appears to be typical. Trees in the northern and southern parts of the state may change colors a week earlier or later. Certain local weather conditions can cause fall colors to be less vivid. For instance, heavy rains at this time of year can flush pigments out of leaves, reducing color. Foresters in northeast Missouri say wet, cool conditions there and increased prevalence of leaf diseases could make colors more bronze than gold in some areas. Drought or strong wind sometimes causes premature leaf drop. But barring such conditions, Missouri’s fall color outlook is bright. For fall color updates, visit mdc.mo.gov/nathis/seasons/fall/.
A jury from the 25th Circuit Court in Phelps County returned a verdict in less than a day for the University of Missouri last Wednesday in a lawsuit filed in April of 2008 by Twila Riley of Salem for personal injuries suffered at the University of Missouri. Riley claimed she fell at a Smackdown Wrestlemania Revenge event held at Missouri S&T at the Gale Bullman Multipurpose Building in May 2007 after a loose railing in the bleachers caused her to trip and fall. She alleged the university was negligent by not maintaining, repairing or warning the public about the loose railing on the bleachers, and asked for an award of more than $25,000 to cover the cost of her medical expenses and loss of wages. A co-petitioner in the case, William Riley of Salem, also asked the court to award him more than $25,000 to cover his wife’s medical expenses, loss of wages and the personal loss of his wife due to her injuries.
In the Netcoming Ceremony held Tuesday night at the Salem High School Gym, Andy Kissir was crowned as the king of the court which featured seniors Jake Schafer and Bret Hagler, junior Levi
Starkey and sophomore Sammy Ibrahim. The Homecoming festivities are scheduled for Friday night at the Salem High School Football Field prior to the game between Houston and Salem. That court features sophmore Bailey Barnes, junior Sam Riley and seniors Janelle Conway, Houlie Ibrahim and Jessica Dean.
An accident happened in Dent County at about 3:00 Wednesday afternoon on Dent County Road 6190 about five miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 73-year old Joan M. Hinman of Salem was driving a 2006 Chevy pickup when she swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway and traveled off the right side of the road and struck a ditch. Hinman suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. The Chevy pickup sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. Hinman was wearing a seat restraint when the accident occurred.
An accident happened at the intersection of Highways 8 and 68 south of St. James Wednesday about 12:10 in the afternoon. According to the highway patrol report a 2006 Ford driven by 50-year old John R. Frazier of Steelville, pulled from the stop sign on Highway 68, crossed the centerline and struck a 2000 Ford driven by 55-year old Vick E. Trout of Steelville. Suffering minor injuries was Trout and a passenger in the 2006 Ford, 33-year old Laura L. Turner of Steelville. They both sought their own treatment. The vehicles were driven frm the scene with minor damage. Everyone involved was wearing seat restraints.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers defeated the Mountain View-Liberty Lady Eagles at Ava, 11-9 to get their first district win EVER in Lady Tiger history. The Lady Tigers will now face the #1 seeded Logan-Rogersville Lady Cats at 6:00 tonight in semi-final action in Ava, weather permitting. If rained out, the game will be moved to Friday night at 6:00 in Ava. The Championship game is scheduled for Saturday morning at 11:00 at Ava.
Matt Kemp belted a two-run homer and the Dodgers received a yeoman effort from the bullpen, as Los Angeles posted a 5-3 win over St. Louis in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at Chavez Ravine. Rafael Furcal collected three hits, including a triple, and knocked in a run for the Dodgers, who captured their second straight NL West crown. Casey Blake finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Mark DeRosa went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the NL Central champion Cardinals, who have dropped nine of their last 11 games dating back to the regular season. Chris Carpenter (0-1), the NL Comeback Player of the Year, looked like anything but a Cy Young contender for St. Louis, surrendering four runs on nine hits and walking four in five innings of work. The clubs established a postseason record by stranding a combined 30 men on base -- 16 for Los Angeles -- in a nine-inning game. Game 2 of this best-of-five series is scheduled for today at 5:07 p.m. in Los Angeles. Clayton Kershaw will toe the rubber for the Dodgers, while St. Louis counters with Adam Wainwright. The Missouri Tigers and Nebraska will battle it out in a Big 12 game tonight at Faurot Field starting at 7:00 with the pre-game show followed by the game at just after 8:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Cardinal baseball.
The St. Louis Blues will be back in action tonight starting at 7:00 against the Atlanta Thrashers. The Blues are 2-0 on the year with the wins coming in Sweden over the weekend against Detroit. The game will not be heard on KSMO due to Cardinal’s baseball and then Missouri Football.
St. Louis Blues have assigned center Derek Armstrong to Peoria (AHL).
The Kansas City Royals have announced hat first base coach Rusty Kuntz has been reassigned as a special assistant to the general manager/field instructor. They also named Eddie Rodriguez first base coach and announced the contract of bullpen coach John Mizerock will not be renewed.

Funeral services for Alice Floyd of Alton Missouri, age 91, will be held today at 12:00 at the Central Community Church of God in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:30 until time of service. Interment will be in the Rolla Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Michael T. Brinkman of West Carrolton, Ohio, age 43, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
Graveside services for James Conrad Morton of Salem, age 66, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Forever Oak Hill Cemetery in St. Louis. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
Funeral services for William O. “Bill” Whitaker of Troy, formerly of Salem, age 36, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the McCoy-Blossom Funeral Home in Troy. Interment will be in the Troy City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Whitaker Children’s Fund.
Funeral services for Betty Lou Stricklin of Cherryville, age 69, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Home Cemetery in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the Gibbs Care Center.
