The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done in District 1 on Dent County Roads 6610, 6630 and 6640 in the Montauk area, as well as on Dent County Road 4160. Simpson said that Dent County Road 5510 would have materials added and be graded, and that brush is being cut on Dent County Road 6470. Commissioner J.J. Tune stated that backhoe work on Dent County Road 2540 would be done to retrieve materials washed away during the heavy rains. The backhoe will then be used to remove debris from a number of low water crossings. He said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2315, 2395, 3200 and 4330. Two workers serviced the dump truck before crushing gravel. Brush is being cut on Dent County Road 4060. Gerald Black and Shirley Black came into the meeting to ask what could be done with an easement not being used on some property in Lenox that is keeping a convenience store from being built. Commissioner J.J. Tune told them that they would need to see who the easement serves and have them rescind the easement, but the Blacks did not know whom that is and would get a copy of the deed to see who is served by the easement. Tune said that if it does belong to the county, they would gladly rescind the easement. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles will be attending a TAC meeting, Operations meeting and the MRPC regular meeting Thursday in St. James. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley is reminding anyone that isn’t registered to vote that today is the FINAL day to get registered. If you have any questions, please call 729-4144. She said that absentee voting is currently going on and as of Monday morning, a total of 288 people have voted absentee. At the last meeting, the Dent County Assessor turned over the totals on real estate and personal property to the clerk who will pass these on to the collector. The county clerk and treasurer balanced on all accounts in September. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving assault, and disorderly conduct. On September 29th at 6:45 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report revealed that a 21-year old Salem female had assaulted a 27-year old Salem female. The 21-year old was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On October 2nd at 1:50 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to the 300 block of East Truman in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem female, and a 31-year old Salem female for disorderly conduct. Both were issued summons to appear in court and released.
An accident happened at 7:30 Tuesday morning in Phelps County on Highway 8 about two miles east of Highway 68 that took the life of a Steelville teen. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup driven by 16-year old Ksenia Bryan of St. James, was traveling westbound on Highway 8. The Ford crossed the centerline and struck a 2006 Toyota Tundra driven by 52-year old Kent Boyer of St. Louis. Following the impact, the Ford rotated and came to rest in the roadway and began to burn. The Toyota traveled off the right side of the roadway and came to rest in the ditch. Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinfard pronounced Bryan dead at the scene. Boyer suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the St. James Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Boyer was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. It is not known if Bryan was wearing a seat restraint. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman Towing of Rolla. The Toyota was totaled and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing of St. James.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a drug violation at the Salem Jr. High School and a fraudulent attempt to obtain a controlled substance. On Friday, October 3rd at 11:20 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to the Salem Jr. High in reference to a drug violation. The investigation led to the detention of a 15-year old male for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was released to his parents and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Officer. At 4:43 that afternoon, an officer was sent to the Country Mart Pharmacy in reference to an individual fraudulently attempting to obtain controlled substances. Investigation led to the arrest of a 30-year old Salem woman. The subject was released pending the issuance of a warrant. The report is still under further investigation.
The Missouri Department of Conservation will conduct a public auction of surplus property at the Salem Maintenance Center located at the Junctions of Highways 32 & 72. Pre-registration will be held on Friday, October 17th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Registration the day of the sale, Saturday, October 18th, begins at 7:30 am. The surplus property sale will then begin 10:00 am. Items can viewed on Friday, October 17th between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. For a listing of the surplus items or for more information call 729-3182.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to the Owensville Dutchgirls Tuesday night, 2 games to 1. Salem won game one, 25-20, then dropped two straight 25-19 decisions. Salem dropped to 8-7-3 on the year and will play in the Licking Tournament this weekend.
The “S-CLUB” sponsored Macho-Mania Boys Volleyball game will be held Thursday, October 9th in the High School gym. The first game will start at 7:00 PM as the sophomores, coached by Kristy Bermudez and Alayna Sellers, will take on the juniors, coached by Rachel Sirois and Jenna Cartwright. The winner will then play the seniors, coached by Hannah Kettner and Jessica Brand, for this year’s “braggin’ rights.” Come on out and support the Tigers. The admission for the event is $1.00 for everyone.

Funeral services for Bessie L. Chamberlain of Salem, age 78, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation willl be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
A memorial service for Rosabel Belt of Rolla, age 92, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James a Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or Golden Age Center.
A memorial mass for Ksenia Kimberly Bryan of St. James, age 16, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. James. Visitation will be held Friday from 3:30 to 8:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the Immaculate Conception Church with a Prayer Service Friday at 3:30. Memorials may be made to the Ksenia Bryan Scholarship Fund at the Phelps County Bank in St. James. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
Funeral services for Bernard Bernier of St. James, age 56, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
A memorial service for Arthur B. Johnson of St. James, age 56, is incomplete at this time. All the Arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Motuary in St. James.
