An accident occurred at 5:50 Monday evening in Dent County on Highway P about three miles east of Salem that resulted in one individual being flown out and left several area teens with injuries. According to the highway patrol report, 17-year old Jacob Plank of Salem was driving a 1998 Ford Ranger northbound when he crossed the centerline in a curve and struck a 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale, driven southbound by 45-year old Michael Morago of Salem, head-on. Morago suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Plank and two 16-year old occupants in the Ford from Salem, Zakary Eplin and Aaron Hodges, suffered moderate injuries and were taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Two occupants in the Chevrolet from Salem, 23-year old James Dakin and 24-year old Rex Dakin, suffered minor injuries and were also taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Eplin, Morago, and Rex Dakin were the only ones wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Commission met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams reported the US Forest Service sent a check for $22,727.90 for Title 2 work done by the county in District 1. The work completed was forest roadwork that was completed between May and August of this year that was approved back in 2013. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 6640, while only grading would be done on county roads 5515, 6250 and 6255. Purcell went on to report that brush would be cut on county roads 5650 and 6320. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2180, 2183, 2185, 2190 and 4330. He did indicate materials would be added and grading done on county road 4030, and brush would be cut on county road 2380. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that all three commissioners attended the South Central County Commissioners Association meeting held last week in Houston. He also said the audit report from the state auditor’s office for Dent County has been released that gives the county an overall “good” rating with a few deficiencies being noted that were addressed by the office holders that were affected. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind anyone who is not registered to vote that they must register by this Wednesday to vote in the General Election on November 4th. She also wants to remind anyone who has had a name change or address change within Dent County to please contact her office before the election to make sure they are voting in the right location. She also reported absentee voting continues at this time at her office. The Commission voted 3-0 to solicit bids for the 3,500 gallons of propane to be delivered between mid October and mid-May to the courthouse. They will open the bids next Thursday at 10:00. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The 51st Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby was held this past weekend at Montauk State Park that raised $11,874 for the American Heart Association. The goal this year was $11,000. Even though it was cool, a good time was had by all who attended with more than 1,500 anglers participating in the derby. On Friday, October 3rd, the Current River Cruisers Car Show was held at Montauk that included 37 cars that raised $455. There were 1,031 tags sold for Saturday, October 4th, and another 835 were sold on Sunday, October 5th. The Country Store, auction and the bake shop raised $2,600 toward the cause. The Men’s Heaviest Stringer went to Denzil Hills of Rolla with 7 pounds, 5 ounces, while the Women’s Heaviest Stringer went to Marti Beckoff of St. Louis with 11 pounds, 12 ounces. Shelby LaChance of Cedar Hills at 7 pounds had the Kid’s heaviest stringer. Winning some of the major prizes this year were Paul Smart of Newburg as he took home the Stained Glass Clock, Jeanine Miriani of St. Louis won the Bear Rod Rack, Diane Baalman was awarded the kayak, Steve Jackson took home the quilt, the cedar shelf was won by Mark Salvage of St. Louis, the food saver went to Simone Carr and the Elk picture was presented to Jennifer Robs. This year’s committee wants to send out a big thank you to the American Legion Post 99 for their cash donation of $500 to help them exceed their goal!

The Lady Tigers traveled to Mountain View to face the Lady Eagles on Monday night with a third consecutive SCA title already clinched, but had their eyes set on back-to-back undefeated SCA seasons. Salem jumped out to an early 8-0 lead after three innings and then cruised on to a 14-8 victory. Kirsten Strebe finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Trista Heavin and Shaylee Harrison added 2 RBI apiece. The Lady Tigers finish the season 16-5 overall and 5-0 in the SCA. They are seeded 2nd in the Class 3 District 9 Tournament and will face the winner of the Sullivan/St. Clair game on Thursday at 4:30.

The Salem Lady Tiger Volleyball team will host Cabool tonight for Senior night. JV will start things off at 6:00 with the varsity to follow. You can hear the varsity game on ksmoradio.com and Fidelity Local 6 will film the game.

Kolten Wong knew his deciding home run in Game 3 was gone when it left his bat. The rookie second baseman smacked a no-doubt, two-run blast in the seventh inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-1 victory and a National League Division Series lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. John Lackey (1-0) struck out eight over seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits while Matt Carpenter hit his third home run of the series for St. Louis. Game 4 of the NLDS will be tonight at Busch Stadium with St. Louis leading the series 2-1. You can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 3:32. The Cardinals will send up Shelby Miller while the Dodgers will have Clayton Kershaw starting on short rest.

Funeral services for Salina Rene-Ann (Hellmer) Young of Salem, age 30, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Young family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Geneva A. (Reese) Wisdom of St. Louis and formerly of Bunker, age 87, will be held today at noon at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 99.

A memorial service mass for Carolyn Ann (Deeken) Cahill will be at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Riverways Pregnancy Center.

Funeral services for Glen “Fudd” Eaton of Steelville, age 77, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
