An accident occurred in Dent County Friday evening at 6:35 six miles north of Salem on Highway 19 at the intersection with Highway JJ.  According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2003 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 43 year-old James P. Steeples of Quincy, IL, was making a left turn onto Highway JJ and failed to negotiate the turn. The Freightliner traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. According to the report, Steeples was wearing a safety restraint and sustained minor injuries, but refused treatment at the scene. The tractor-trailer sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will conduct a public hearing and meeting, called by Chairman Jerry Craig, tonight at 6:30 pm in the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 North Washington. The public hearing and meeting is for the purpose of discussing the rezoning of 1600 Doss Road from Residential R-1 to Commercial; owner Salem Crisis Center, and 900 South MacArthur from Residential R-1 to Commercial; owner Ora V. Campbell Trust. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then start their meeting at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, during the hearing of persons, W.H. Thomas, Jr., Attorney has requested, per City Zoning regulations, to forward the rezoning application for the Ora Campbell Trust to the Board. In bids, the City of Salem requested sealed bids for hot mix asphalt overlay for an estimated 1,734 tons of asphalt and three bids were received. City Attorney William Camm Seay will report on the public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission along with Chairmen Jerry Craig. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will address items concerning the city and Mayor Gary Brown will update the Board on various issues in his report. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, the Board will be presented with Resolutions #11-2013 thru 15-2013 respectively, authorizing the Mayor to execute agreements between the City of Salem and the Salem Telecommunication Resource Center; the Salem Area Community Betterment Association; the Dent County University of Missouri Extension Council; the Dent County Museum; and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Then Resolution #16-2013 will be presented and is required in order for the Mayor to sign the contract with Clayton E. Lucas II. Lucas will then be requesting approval of bills over $3,000 and Salem City Police Chief Steelman is requesting the Board approve the hours of 6:00 to 8:00 pm be set as Halloween Hours for trick or treating on October 31^st.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports. On Saturday, September 28^th at 2:20 in the afternoon, 22-year old Eion Agers of Salem was arrested in Dent County on several Salem Police Department warrants failure to appear. The warrants were for failing to appear for original charges of failure to register a motor vehicle, no insurance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. On Sunday, September 29^th at 5:05 in the evening, 28-year old David Nash of Rolla was arrested in Crawford County for felony theft of a motor vehicle, felony possession of a controlled substance – Crystal methamphetamine, and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. He also had four felony Pulaski County warrants for resisting arrest, resisting officer, theft of a motor vehicle, and 2^nd degree domestic assault. Additionally, he had felony Dent County warrant for resisting arrest and felony Phelps County warrants for failure to appear on domestic assault, 1^st degree property damage, and theft. He was taken to the Crawford County Jail and held on no bond. On Monday, September 30^th at 6:05 in the evening, 55-year old Daniel Watkins of Salem was arrest in Dent County and charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to drive of the right half of the roadway, ad no proof of insurance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and released. Later that night at 8:20, 22-year old Cassandra Loney of Licking was arrested in Phelps County on a felony warrant for forgery of checks and theft from the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department. She was taken to the Phelps County Jail and held on bond.

Gabby Sanderson was crowned the 2013 Football Homecoming Queen Friday night at the Salem Football game. The 2013 Net Coming King will be crowned between the JV and varsity volleyball game with Rolla this Tuesday at the Salem High School Gym. The Net Coming Court is comprised of Freshman Jon Arts escorted by Breanna Sellers, Sophomore Noah Sapp escorted by DeAndra Sullins, Junior Logan Pogue escorted by Hannah Jadwin, and the Senior King candidates include Zach Schafer escorted by Morgan Hailey, Josh Plank escorted by Cheyanne Moore and Tucker Conley escorted by Kelsey Michno.
