An accident occurred in Dent County Friday evening at 6:35 six miles north of Salem on Highway 19 at the intersection with Highway JJ.  According to the Highway Patrol Report a 2003 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 43 year-old James P. Steeples of Quincy, IL, was making a left turn onto Highway JJ and failed to negotiate the turn. The Freightliner traveled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. According to the report, Steeples was wearing a safety restraint and sustained minor injuries, but refused treatment at the scene. The tractor-trailer sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The City of Salem Planning & Zoning Board of Commissioners will conduct a public hearing and meeting, called by Chairman Jerry Craig, tonight at 6:30 pm in the City Hall Council Chambers at 202 North Washington. The public hearing and meeting is for the purpose of discussing the rezoning of 1600 Doss Road from Residential R-1 to Commercial; owner Salem Crisis Center, and 900 South MacArthur from Residential R-1 to Commercial; owner Ora V. Campbell Trust. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then start their meeting at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, during the hearing of persons, W.H. Thomas, Jr., Attorney has requested, per City Zoning regulations, to forward the rezoning application for the Ora Campbell Trust to the Board. In bids, the City of Salem requested sealed bids for hot mix asphalt overlay for an estimated 1,734 tons of asphalt and three bids were received. City Attorney William Camm Seay will report on the public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission along with Chairmen Jerry Craig. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will address items concerning the city and Mayor Gary Brown will update the Board on various issues in his report. During the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, the Board will be presented with Resolutions #11-2013 thru 15-2013 respectively, authorizing the Mayor to execute agreements between the City of Salem and the Salem Telecommunication Resource Center; the Salem Area Community Betterment Association; the Dent County University of Missouri Extension Council; the Dent County Museum; and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. Then Resolution #16-2013 will be presented and is required in order for the Mayor to sign the contract with Clayton E. Lucas II. Lucas will then be requesting approval of bills over $3,000 and Salem City Police Chief Steelman is requesting the Board approve the hours of 6:00 to 8:00 pm be set as Halloween Hours for trick or treating on October 31st.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their arrest reports. On Saturday, September 28th at 2:20 in the afternoon, 22-year old Eion Agers of Salem was arrested in Dent County on several Salem Police Department warrants failure to appear. The warrants were for failing to appear for original charges of failure to register a motor vehicle, no insurance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. On Sunday, September 29th at 5:05 in the evening, 28-year old David Nash of Rolla was arrested in Crawford County for felony theft of a motor vehicle, felony possession of a controlled substance – Crystal methamphetamine, and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. He also had four felony Pulaski County warrants for resisting arrest, resisting officer, theft of a motor vehicle, and 2nd degree domestic assault. Additionally, he had felony Dent County warrant for resisting arrest and felony Phelps County warrants for failure to appear on domestic assault, 1st degree property damage, and theft. He was taken to the Crawford County Jail and held on no bond. On Monday, September 30th at 6:05 in the evening, 55-year old Daniel Watkins of Salem was arrest in Dent County and charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to drive of the right half of the roadway, ad no proof of insurance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and released. Later that night at 8:20, 22-year old Cassandra Loney of Licking was arrested in Phelps County on a felony warrant for forgery of checks and theft from the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department. She was taken to the Phelps County Jail and held on bond.

Gabby Sanderson was crowned the 2013 Football Homecoming Queen Friday night at the Salem Football game. The 2013 Net Coming King will be crowned between the JV and varsity volleyball game with Rolla this Tuesday at the Salem High School Gym. The Net Coming Court is comprised of Freshman Jon Arts escorted by Breanna Sellers, Sophomore Noah Sapp escorted by DeAndra Sullins, Junior Logan Pogue escorted by Hannah Jadwin, and the Senior King candidates include Zach Schafer escorted by Morgan Hailey, Josh Plank escorted by Cheyanne Moore and Tucker Conley escorted by Kelsey Michno.

J.J. Cox of Willow Springs recovered a fumble that set up a 4th quarter Bears field goal, then intercepted and returned a Dylan Wisdom pass 40 yards for a touchdown in the 4th quarter that proved to be the difference at the Bears beat the Tigers, 24-20. Zane Kyser rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown, and Dylan Wisdom was 8-17 for 145 yards and a touchdown plus an interception. Salem is 3-3 on the year and 1-2 in the SCA. The Tigers will host Mountain Grove Friday night at 7:00 and it will be Senior Night.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will host the Mountain View Liberty Eagles this afternoon at 4:30 in going for the second consecutive SCA Conference title outright in the final regular season game at the Salem City Park Field. Salem is 13-8 on the year and 6-0 in the SCA. KSMO will join the game in progress after Cards Baseball, and play the entire game back on a delayed basis following the Cards game at 7:00. The game will be streamed live on ksmoradio.com.

Pedro Alvarez hit a go-ahead RBI single in a two-run eighth inning on Sunday and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-3 in Game 3 of the NL Division Series. The Pirates now have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series with Game 4 set for this afternoon in Pittsburgh. You’ll be able to hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 1:37.

Jaroslav Halak recorded his 1st shutout of the year and his 17th as a Blue to set a new franchise record, as the Blues defeated Florida, 7-0 Saturday night. The Blues received goals from seven different players including a penalty shot from Alexander Steen. The Blues continue their long home stand against the Chicago Blackhawks Wednesday night at 7:00. 

James Franklin threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns as the Missouri Tigers took down the Vanderbilt Commodores, 51-28. Missouri will play seventh ranked Georgia on Saturday.

Sam Bradford tossed three touchdown passes to lead the St. Louis Rams to a 34-20 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars at Edward Jones Dome. The Rams will play the Texans on Sunday.

Jamaal Charles scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter and the Chiefs beat the Tennessee Titans 26-17 on Sunday. The Chiefs play the Raiders on Sunday.

Funeral services for Jeffrey Warner of Salem, age 44, will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the Salem Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
