The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. Commissioner Dennis Purcell was not in attendance due to a previous commitment. In the road report, District 1 Road Supervisor Rusty Chamberlain said that brush would be cut in Dent County Road 2450, grading would be done on Dent County 6245 and material would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 4180. Chamberlain also said that maintenance would be done around the shop. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 4380, grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 2340, 4330, 6130, 6140, 6160 and material would be added and a pipe would also be installed on county road 4330. Larson also reported that the county did one chip and seal road in each district this week with the over-lay machine purchased from Iron County and they turned out very well. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles reported that he was notified on Monday that the Missouri Association Councils of Government were withdrawing from the Sustainable Development Planning Grant Application. Therefore, consequently the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MPRC) and other regional planning organizations are also no longer involved in the planning grant program for this round. The Dent County Commission had recently sent a letter to the MRPC stating their opposition and expressing that Dent County would not participate and that letter was also aired this week on the Common Sense Coalition program heard on KSMO Radio. Presiding Commissioner Skiles and Commissioner Larson attended the South Central Commissioners Association meeting in Houston on Wednesday and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley attended the South Central Clerks meeting as well. Curley then reported that she and the treasurer balanced on all accounts for September of this year. She also reported that the Commission was going to be reviewing the Dent County Collector’s abatements, add-ons and, monthly collections for September of 2011. Curley wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Courthouse would be closed on Monday, October 10^th in observance of Columbus Day. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held on Thursday, October 13^th at the courthouse beginning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police released their reports involving a driving while intoxicated, shoplifting, and a theft. On Friday, September 28^th at 10:34 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped to investigation an assault. The investigation led to the arrest of the driver, a 43-year old male of Salem, for driving while intoxicated. He was incarcerated and was issued a summons to appear in court. On Saturday, September 29^th at 1:40 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen debit card. The investigation revealed that person or persons unknown took a debit card and completed two transactions totaling $205.90. Later that night at 10:24, an officer was dispatched to Dollar General in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 29 year-old female of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $72.50. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. This year’s Wurdack Farm Field Day today will include a demonstration of a portable sawmill as well as talks on forage, beef production, timber management, and agroforestry. The field day begins at 8:00 a.m. with coffee and breakfast snacks. At 8:30 a.m. brief introductory remarks will be made, and at 9:00 a.m. tours of research and demonstration projects on the farm will begin. The tours will conclude at noon with a steak sandwich lunch at the spring. The Salem TCRC is sponsoring the Tuesday, October 11^th Chamber Members luncheon meeting. This meeting will be held at Salem TCRC located at 1200 West Rolla Road. Sherry Lea and Ray Walden will share an update on the Salem TCRC including the transition since the Extension's announcement last fall. As a result, the Council for a Healthy Dent County has joined the Salem TCRC partnership and will replace MU Extension as the employer of Salem TCRC staff going forward. Information from a facilitated focus group discussion held in April, will explain future program and service needs and priorities for the Salem TCRC. There is no cost to members for lunch; but members need to RSVP today to chamber@salemmo.com, by calling 729-6900 or stop by 200 South main. 

The public is invited to a ‘Welcome Reception’ on Monday, October 10^th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm to meet the new City Administrator, Clayton Lucas and his family. The Welcome Reception will be held at the Salem TCRC in the Freedom Activity Center located at 1200 West Rolla Road. The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Community Betterment Association and the City of Salem are sponsoring the reception. Light refreshments will be served. Clayton and his family just moved to Salem and he started work on Monday, October 3^rd. The public is invited to stop by to help welcome Clayton and his family to the community. The Board of aldermen will hold its regular city council meeting following the reception in the TCRC meeting room.

The Salem Football Tigers will be in Cabool tonight to face the Bulldogs at 7:00. Due to contractual requirements, the game will be heard on KSMO Radio and on-line at ksmoradio.com on a tape delay basis immediately following the St. Louis Cardinal’s game. Salem enters the game 3-3 on the year.

The 7^th and 8^th grade Salem Football Tigers each had decisive victories over the Houston Tigers Thursday night as the 7^th graders won 56-0 and the 8^th graders won 38-0. Zak Eplin scored twice for the 7^th graders while Derek McClain caught a touchdown pass and returned a fumble for a score for the 8^th graders. Both teams will be in West Plains next Thursday to finish the season.

Game five of the National League Division Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies will be played tonight. Chris Carpenter will go against Roy Halladay in the elimination game. You will be able to hear this game on KSMO with the pre-game show starting at 7:02. If the Cardinals win this game, they will play Game one of the NLCS on Sunday, and that game will also be broadcast on KSMO.

The Missouri Tiger football team will be at Bill Snyder Stadium in Manhattan Saturday to face the Kansas State Wildcats. You can hear that game on KSMO Radio with the pregame show getting started at 1:30.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Nashville Predators on Saturday night to open up the 2011-2012 season. Game time will be at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Chiefs will travel to Indianapolis Sunday to play the Colts at noon. The St. Louis Rams have the week off.

Funeral services for Shirley M. Mach of Salem, age 58, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be held Saturday night from 6:00 until 9:00. Interment will be in the Cooksey Cemetery in Salem.

Funeral services for Velma Lucile Conway of Birch Tree, age 84, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Bunker Cemetery. Memorials may be made to family.

Funeral services for Bobby Bryan Young of Salem, age 78, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Jadwin Cemetery.

Funeral services for Patrick Marion Layton of Newburg, age 69, are incomplete at this time but under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
