An accident happened at 2:15 Tuesday evening in Iron County on Route KK about a mile and half south of Highway 32. According to the highway patrol report, 45-year old Ladonna Waller of Boss was driving a 1997 Ford Taurus southbound on Route KK when she lost control while attempting to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side to the roadway and struck several trees and overturned ejecting the driver. Waller suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac to St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford Taurus was totaled and removed from the scene by Abney’s Wrecker Service.

Do you have old tires beside the garage? Wondering what to do with that old computer and that television that are piled in the basement? There’s finally an answer. Meramec Regional Planning Commission, in partnership with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the City of Salem and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, will offer a tire and electronics collection this Saturday, October 16^th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the utility/construction department’s parking lot at corner of Third and Grand Streets in Salem. The event is hosted by the City of Salem. Hard drives, printers, phones, VCRs, microwaves and most other electronics may be dropped off free of charge. Fees will be charged for televisions and monitors. Televisions will cost $5 for households and $10 for businesses. Each computer monitor will cost $5. Fees will also be charged for tires. Passenger tires will be $1.50 each; truck tires will be $5 each; and tractor tires will be $10 each. Tires from businesses are not accepted. You must unload the items yourself. The collection is open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties. The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste District is using its own grant program, funded through landfill user tipping fees, to sponsor these collections. MRPC is working with Midwest Recycling Center of Crystal City and Park Hills to recycle electronics, and tires will be recycled into tire-derived fuel. The solid waste management district will also have educational information available at the collection that will help residents deal with other types of waste, including household hazardous waste. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill announced that the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Community Facility Direct Grant and Loan program would provide two Missouri counties and four Missouri community organizations with a total of $491,152 in federal funding. According to the USDA, the funding can be used to provide essential community facilities and improve the quality of life in towns and small cities throughout the country. The Salem Library Improvement Board received a $7,505 grant and $6,147 loan to purchase new equipment for use at the Salem Public Library.

Intercounty Electric Cooperative is hosting the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce October Meeting and providing the meal at no cost on Thursday, October 14^th at the Southwest Baptist University, Room 110 beginning at noon.  General Manager Dwayne Cartwright will be speaking on “Energy Assurance” - how the co-ops are positioned with the energy needs and challenges for the future. The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of September. During the month, they wrote 15 traffic tickets, five warning tickets, two equipment repair orders and they also served 35 summons to appear in court. The Salem Police Department investigated 16 accidents, four assaults, one domestic assault, and two reports of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 23 reports of stealing, eight reports of property damage, five burglaries, four reports of disorderly conduct, one report for open containers, one report of animal cruelty, five reports of counterfeiting, one report of driving while drivers license revoked, one report of a lost or stolen plate, one report of a missing or runaway juvenile, one report of trespassing and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated one report of possession of drug paraphernalia, and one report of synthetic drugs.  The Salem Police Department also conducted one death investigation. The police department received 1,639 calls for service during the month and handled 148 walk-ins to the station and redirected 64 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 16 hours in court testifying, 12 hours as court bailiff and spent 12 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in September included 10 calls for escorts, four 9-1-1 calls, eight intoxicated driver investigations, one call for a suspicious person or vehicle, one call for a peace disturbance, seven ambulance assist calls, seven calls for alarms sounding, six calls for fights in progress, seven domestic dispute calls, three calls for an intoxicated pedestrian, one call for a vehicle lookout, and one fire call. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,062 miles during the month of September. The Salem Police Department arrested 13 males and eight females during the month of September.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4^th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award. Criteria, eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office located at 200 S. Main St. or requested by e-mail from chamber@salemmo.com.
