This week is Fire Prevention Week. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), along with local fire departments and other safety advocates nationwide are urging people to Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned. Fire departments responded to an estimated 1.5 million fires in 2008. These fires resulted in 3,320 civilian fire fatalities, 16,705 civilian fire injuries and an estimated $15.5 billion in direct property loss. This year’s campaign, Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned focuses on ways to prevent fires, and the deaths, injuries, and property loss they cause. Home fires caused 84 percent of all fire deaths. By providing valuable information on fire and burn prevention and safety tips, the campaign aims to help the public keep their homes and the people who live there, safe from fire and burns. NFPA has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during that week every year since 1925. NFPA has been a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, building, and life safety to the public since 1896. The mission of the international nonprofit organization is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.

An accident happened at 8:40 pm on Monday, October 5^th in Phelps County on Highway 68 about seven miles south of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Trail Blazer driven by 39-year old Kristian Flett of Salem was traveling southbound on Highway 68. The Chevy went off the right side of the road, returned to the roadway and traveled off the left side of the road. The Chevy returned to the road, skidded across the centerline, off the right side of the roadway and overturned. Flett suffered minor injuries and sought her own treatment. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Trail Blazer sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred on at 3:39 in the afternoon on Monday, September 28^th on the Salem High School parking lot. According to the Salem Police report, a 1996 Chevrolet S-10 driven by Nathanial Boxx, a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Courtney Ray and a 1994 Jeep Cherokee driven by Leonard Parks all of Salem, were leaving the parking lot at the Salem R-80 school. The Pontiac Sunfire and the Jeep Cherokee were stopped and waiting for traffic to pass by on Third Street. The Chevrolet S-10 didn’t notice that the Pontiac and Jeep were stopped, causing contact to be made with the Pontiac, which caused the Pontiac to make contact with the Jeep. One injury was reported. The Chevrolet S-10, the Pontiac Sunfire and the Jeep Cherokee all sustained minor damage.

“A Haunting in the Hills” Brings the Past Back to Life at Alley Spring Ozark National Scenic Riverways will host this year’s "A Haunting in the Hills" on the weekend of October 10th and 11th, 2009, at Alley Spring near Eminence.  The event will have two full days of exciting activities as well as the usual nighttime storytelling program on Saturday evening. Daytime activities will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, as scenes from the past come to life with early Ozark settlers and residents of the Alley community. Demonstrations will include basket weaving, apple butter making, blacksmithing, coopering, broom making, soap making, shingle riving, rope making, wool spinning and weaving, candle making, period cooking, wood carving, and much more.  Talented local musicians will provide musical entertainment each day.  Children can try their hands at making candles and rope, and play with toys and games popular over 100 years ago! After sunset on Saturday, a very different setting will emerge.  Candlelit pathways will guide your way through Ozark legends, folktales, mysteries, superstitions, and natural wonders as the age-old tradition of storytelling comes back to life.  On Saturday night only, get ready to be “spellbound” at five different storytelling venues. Storytelling sessions begin at 7:00 and run through 9:00 p.m. Visitors are urged to bring along lawn chairs and flashlights, especially for the Saturday evening activities. A food vendor will be available on-site both days.  “A Haunting in the Hills" is a free event and will be held at Alley Spring, located 6 miles west of Eminence, MO on Hwy 106.  For more information on this free program, please contact the Ozark National Scenic Riverways at (573) 226-3945.
