The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting in the City Hall Council Chambers Monday night. At the meeting, the board heard from Linda Mielke who felt her rights and privacy have been violated by a person taking pictures of her property thinking it is not up to standards. Alderman Riley made it clear that the person taking the pictures does NOT represent the city, only Code Officer Rick Raw represents the city in making that determination. The board approved the request from the Grace Community Church to close the 600 block of Water Street on Halloween from 4:00-9:00 PM. The board then approved the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Board on the annexation of 1409 West Rolla Road and 900 East Rolla Road into the city and an ordinance will be drawn up for that for the next meeting. The Planning and Zoning Commission motion died for a second to provide a conditional use permit to sell cars at the 4^th Street Mall, but Alderman Jim McDaniels asked to vote on the issue anyway. He and Alderman Jackson voted to approve the permit while Alderman Riley and Nash voted against with Mayor Gary Brown breaking the tie against allowing the conditional use permit. Alderman Riley brought in signatures from citizens who would like to have Roberts Street paved on the next go around from the asphalt company, but there are not currently enough funds to cover the streets that have been budgeted. He also asked about the sidewalks on Askins Street and what the city is going to do: bid them out or do it themselves. The board decided to confer with City Engineer Bill Huffman at a special meeting to be held later this week. Alderman Jim McDaniels was extremely upset that the insurance company is not going to pay for the city’s message sign at the junction of Highway 32-72 and 19 that was blown down a month ago. Mayor Brown is still negotiating with the insurance company, but Alderman McDaniels wants their representative at the next meeting. He said that the community wide yard sale was again a huge success; and he wants a report on the street sweeper at every meeting listing the streets swept, as well as hours and days worked. Mayor Brown reported that the sewer lines to be lined with PVC have been cleaned out and that the company should be in town next week to do the work. He reminded everyone about the electronic recycling day to be held on October 18^th at Third and Grand where they will accept tires and TVs for a fee, as well as take other electronics such as microwaves, computers, cell phones, etc. for no charge.  He also said he met with the tree board and they have divided up the city into four sections. He said they are looking for grant money for tree replacement. Brown also reported that the students from Missouri Science and Technology in Rolla would be concentrating on eight different projects each with a local person as their contact. The board approved Bill #3141 that allows the mayor to execute a lease agreement with MODOT for the city to take over the Highway 19 Roadside Park. The board approved the issuance of a wholesale solicitor license to Counts Hollow Vineyard, LLC to distribute their product, and they approved moving the next meeting to October 21^st so that the mayor and Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs could attend the Missouri Community Betterment Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony. The board was then told that they would have to adopt a Red Flag Rule to develop a written Identity Theft Prevention Program by November 1^st and City Clerk Mary Happel is working on that. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.

The 45^th Annual 2008 Rose Holland Trout Derby was held this past weekend at Montauk State Park near Salem. There were 1,020 daily tags sold on Saturday and 920 on Sunday. A total of 786 entered the derby and there were 64 fish and 37 lunkers caught. Cash donations totaled $2,175.00; the store, bake shop and auction raised a total of $3,629.40; registrations totaled $3,573.00; memorials totaled $850.00; and all other events including kids fun, shirts and the car show brought in another $2,651.50 for a grand total of $12,878.90, which is $65 more than last year. All the proceeds collected go to the American Heart Association. Awards were given on Sunday at noon. Winning 1^st place in the men’s heaviest trout was Todd Johnson of Fredericktown with a 10 pound, 6 ounce trout, and in 2^nd place was Dale Williams of Salem weighing in with a 10 pound, 4 ounce trout. Winning 1^st place in the women’s heaviest trout was Jamie Barthel of Troy, Illinois with a 3 pound, 1 ounce trout and in 2^nd place was Shirley Harrison of Valle Mines weighing in at 2 pounds, 9 ounces. In the kid’s heaviest stringer was Lawson Toman of Salem at 7 pounds, 14 ounces, Garrett Wilfong from Bonne Terre with 6 pounds and in 3^rd place was Austin Spears with 3 pounds, and 12 ounces. Robert Hood of Licking weighed in the heaviest brown trout at 8 pounds and 5 ounces, and the heaviest fish caught went to Todd Johnson of Fredericktown with a rainbow trout weighing in at 10 pounds, 6 ounces.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will perform pavement repairs on Route 72 in Phelps County today and tomorrow, weather permitting. Work will begin at Rolla and end at the Dent County line. Crews and equipment will be on the road between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. Motorists traveling this route are urged to exercise caution.

The 9th grade football team fell to the Mountain View-Liberty J.V. team Monday night, 38-6. Liberty scored once in the first quarter, three times in the 2^nd quarter, and twice in the fourth quarter.  Salem's score came late in the fourth when J.R. Rictor scored from 5 yards out. The 9^th graders will face Borgia next Monday.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Owensville Dutchgirls tonight at 6:00 with the JV teams in action. KSMO will air the varsity contest at about 7:00.

The “S-CLUB” sponsored Macho-Mania Boys Volleyball game will be held Thursday, October 9^th in the High School gym. The first game will start at 7:00 PM as the sophomores, coached by Kristy Bermudez and Alayna Sellers, will take on the juniors, coached by Rachel Sirois and Jenna Cartwright. The winner will then play the seniors, coached by Hannah Kettner and Jessica Brand, for this year’s “braggin’ rights.” Come on out and support the Tigers. The admission for the event is $1.00 for everyone.
