An accident occurred at 9:00 Sunday evening in Phelps County on Private Drive 11380 just east of County Road 3030. According to the highway patrol report, 38-year old Christopher Jackson of Rolla was driving 2005 Ford Explorer north when the 8-year old occupant, Brooklyn Jackson of Rolla, jumped onto the rear passenger running board and the fell from the moving vehicle, striking the ground. Brooklyn suffered serious injuries and was flown by Mercy Lifeline to the University Hospital in Columbia.

An accident happened at 3:00 Sunday afternoon in Crawford County about four miles north of Viburnum on Arlie Barr Cutoff Road. According to the highway patrol report, 28-year old Kammy Christie of Viburnum was backing up a 1997 Chevrolet 1500 west when the 2-year old occupant, Tucker Christie of Viburnum, fell out of the bed of the truck. Tucker suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis.

An accident occurred Saturday morning at 12:15 in Texas County on Route CC about 8 miles north of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1985 GMC Sierra driven by 44-year old Michele R. Weaver of Lenox, failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the roadway and overturned. Weaver sustained moderate injuries and a passenger, 40 year-old James L. McCoy of Lenox, sustained minor injuries.  Both were transported by ambulance to the Texas County Memorial Hospital. According to the report, Weaver and McCoy were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The GMC Sierra sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Jays Towing.

An accident occurred at 8:30 Thursday morning in Phelps County on I-44 about 13 miles west of Rolla. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Toyota pickup driven westbound by 60-year old James Flint of St. James, lost control on the wet pavement and ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Flint suffered moderate injuries and taken by the Phelps County ambulance to the Phelps County Medical Center. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Toyota pickup was totaled and removed from the scene by Ron Dishman’s Towing of Rolla.

Roadwork continues in Dent County this week. Roadway resurfacing continues on Highway 19 between Highway 32 and Route KK in Shannon County. The contractor will begin installing shoulders this week. One lane is open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area. The project is scheduled for completion in November. And pavement and drainage improvements continue on Route J between Highway 72 and Highway 32. The road is closed between Highway 32/72 and 3rd Street during the work. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route around the work area. There are a number of driving routes through Mark Twain National Forest to enjoy fall color. Fall colors in southern Missouri, where most of 1.5 million acres of Mark Twain National Forest is located, usually in October. Spring and summer weather conditions can impact the variety and the length of time of when fall colors are visible. In the past, fall colors started in northern Missouri and moved south starting mid-September and lasting through early November, depending on weather. From Rolla travel south 8 miles on Highway 63 to the Lane Spring Recreation Area. From Salem, check out the area on Route A between Highway 19 and Bunker. From Houston, travel north on Highway 63 to Licking. Travel west on Highway 32 and cross the Big Piney River heading towards Success and then south on Highway 17 back to Houston. Or travel North from Houston on Highway 63 and head west on Highway 32 to Route N and then Route AF towards the Big Piney River. Enjoy the river bluffs along the Big Piney River at the Slabtown Access.

The swarming Mountain Grove Defense was too much for the Salem Tiger offense limiting the Tigers to just 52 total offensive yards, and the Panther offense used a strong running game and very effective passing game enabling them to dominate the Tigers Friday night, 43-0. Quarterback John Healy and running back Trystan Short each scored twice as Short finished with 128 yards rushing on 21 carries. Salem falls to 2-5 on the year and 1-4 in the SCA. Salem will host the Mountain View/Liberty Eagles Friday night and it will be Homecoming.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers beat Rolla 6-5, then lost to Marshfield, 9-2, on Friday in pool play of the Rolla Invitational. On Saturday the Lady Tigers would play in the second place bracket in pool play. Salem would beat Sullivan 11-1 in four innings before falling to Waynesville 9-2. Kirsten Strebe would finish the tournament with 3 RBI while Savannah Hanning added 2 RBI. The Lady Tigers are now 15-5 on the year and will play at Mt. View Liberty today at 4:30.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers played in Licking Tournament over the weekend. They fell just short to Houston in two sets, 18-25 and 21-25, before losing to Cabool, 17-25 and 8-25. The Lady Tigers would then play Mt. View and Eminence, falling in two sets in both games. Makayla Cahill and Moriah Cramer finshed with 4 kills apiece while Amelia McGuirk and Brooke Shults added 3 kills each. Salem will host Plato tonight at 6:00 for Netcoming and Autograph Night and then they will host Cabool on Tuesday for Senior Night.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will host the L.A. Dodgers tonight for Game 3 of the NLDS tonight at Busch Stadium. John Lackey will take the mound for the Cardinals while the Dodgers send up Hyun-Jin Ryu. The series is tied 1-1 and you can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 7:32.

Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer homered as the Kansas City Royals beat the L.A. Angels, 8-3, in Game 3 to gain their first American League Division Series berth in 29 years. James Shields (1-0) gave up two runs on six hits while striking out six over six innings for Kansas City, which will travel to Baltimore to face the Orioles in Game 1 of the ALCS on Friday.

The Eagles' offense was once again contained to pedestrian levels, but touchdowns on defense and special teams helped Philadelphia hold off the St. Louis Rams, 34-28, in Week 5 action. The Rams scored the final 21 points but two dropped passes and an incompletion on fourth down spoiled a chance at a comeback. The Rams will host the 49ers next Monday.

Phil Dawson made five field goals and the 49ers spoiled Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith's return to San Francisco with a 22-17 victory. Jamaal Charles carried the ball 15 times for 80 yards. He moved into second place on the Chiefs' all-time rushing list behind Priest Holmes. Charles can pass Holmes with 53 yards in Kansas City's next game on October 19th against the Chargers in San Diego.

Funeral services for Salina Rene-Ann (Hellmer) Young of Salem, age 30, will be held on Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Young family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Geneva A. (Reese) Wisdom of St. Louis and formerly of Bunker, age 87, will be held Tuesday at noon at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Greeley Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 99.

Funeral services for Glen “Fudd” Eaton of Steelville, age 77, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

A memorial service mass for Carolyn Ann (Deeken) Cahill will be at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the Riverways Pregnancy Center.
