The 47^th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby has held over the weekend with a goal of $8,000. Proceeds from registrations totaled $4,132; the store, bake shop and auction raised $1,835; shirts sold totaled another $1,986; the cruise-in car show brought in $1,110; and with donations there was a total of $9,263 raised with proceeds going to the American Heart Association. There were 971 tags sold on Saturday, another 787 sold on Sunday which brought the total tags sold to 1,758. There were a total of 34-tagged fish caught and 25 lunkers were also caught during the derby. Don Stroburg of Salem caught a 7 pound 14 ounce lunker, Chris Terrill of Salem caught a 5 pound 14 ounce and Dennis Medlock weighed in with 4 pounds 4 ounce lunker.  Also weighing in on the lunkers was Robert Hood of Licking with 4 pounds 15 ounces and Chris Hood with 4 pounds. The men’s heaviest stringer went to Drew Roemmich of St. Louis with 9 pounds 12 ounces and the women’s heaviest stringer went to Brandy Mae of Houston. The kids’ heaviest brown trout went to Kyle Dudley of Columbia and in the kid’s heaviest stringer there was tie between Chase Ringwald of Wentzville and Bradley Gaines of Wood River weighing in at 4 pounds 8 ounces each. There were a total of 26 kids that registered stringers.

The Dent County Coroner’s Office released a report involving a man from Indiana. On Thursday, September 30^th at 12:58 in the afternoon, 41-year old John W. Bippus of Mt. Vernon, Indiana was pronounced dead by Dent County Coroner Gina White as a result of suicide. Bippus was reported missing from his home on September 22^nd. After finding his truck parked on Dent County Road 6530, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and Park Rangers investigated and found Bippus in a wooded area near his truck with a self inflicted gunshot wound to his head.  The Mt. Vernon Police notified the Bippus family and funeral arrangements were made with the Schnider Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Indiana by his family.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4^th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award. Criteria, eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office located at 200 S. Main St. or requested by e-mail from chamber@salemmo.com. The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a disturbance, a traffic violation, an intoxicated driver, and trespassing. On Saturday, October 2^nd at 11:30 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 200 block of West Rolla Road in reference to a disturbance that led to the arrest of a 32-year old man from Boss for burglary, assault and resisting arrest. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. Also arrested was a 27-year old Salem man for the possession of synthetic narcotics, possession of marijuana and the possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. At 10:35 p.m. that same evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem man for driving while his license was suspended and other traffic violations. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Sunday morning, October 3^rd at 3:30, an officer was notified of a possible intoxicated driver. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem woman for driving while drugged and driving while having her license suspended. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released to a family member. Then at 12:50 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a subject that was trespassing. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem woman. She had previously been arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart and was issued an order by Wal-Mart not to be on their premises. She was issued a summons to appear in court on the trespassing charge and was released. At 3:00 later that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East Hawkins in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 13-year old juvenile for throwing rocks at a residence. The juvenile was released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile authorities.
