The 47th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby has held over the weekend with a goal of $8,000. Proceeds from registrations totaled $4,132; the store, bake shop and auction raised $1,835; shirts sold totaled another $1,986; the cruise-in car show brought in $1,110; and with donations there was a total of $9,263 raised with proceeds going to the American Heart Association. There were 971 tags sold on Saturday, another 787 sold on Sunday which brought the total tags sold to 1,758. There were a total of 34-tagged fish caught and 25 lunkers were also caught during the derby. Don Stroburg of Salem caught a 7 pound 14 ounce lunker, Chris Terrill of Salem caught a 5 pound 14 ounce and Dennis Medlock weighed in with 4 pounds 4 ounce lunker.  Also weighing in on the lunkers was Robert Hood of Licking with 4 pounds 15 ounces and Chris Hood with 4 pounds. The men’s heaviest stringer went to Drew Roemmich of St. Louis with 9 pounds 12 ounces and the women’s heaviest stringer went to Brandy Mae of Houston. The kids’ heaviest brown trout went to Kyle Dudley of Columbia and in the kid’s heaviest stringer there was tie between Chase Ringwald of Wentzville and Bradley Gaines of Wood River weighing in at 4 pounds 8 ounces each. There were a total of 26 kids that registered stringers.

The Dent County Coroner’s Office released a report involving a man from Indiana. On Thursday, September 30th at 12:58 in the afternoon, 41-year old John W. Bippus of Mt. Vernon, Indiana was pronounced dead by Dent County Coroner Gina White as a result of suicide. Bippus was reported missing from his home on September 22nd. After finding his truck parked on Dent County Road 6530, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department and Park Rangers investigated and found Bippus in a wooded area near his truck with a self inflicted gunshot wound to his head.  The Mt. Vernon Police notified the Bippus family and funeral arrangements were made with the Schnider Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Indiana by his family.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce board is requesting nominations to honor businesses and individuals at this year’s awards banquet. The banquet and auction will be held on Thursday, November 4th beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. Awards will be given in six categories: Business of the Year, Non-Profit Organization of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Customer Service Award, Citizen of the Decade and Youth Visionary Award. Criteria, eligibility and nomination forms for these awards can be picked up at the Chamber office located at 200 S. Main St. or requested by e-mail from chamber@salemmo.com. Nominations will be accepted through Thursday, October 14th. Completed nominations can be mailed, faxed or brought to the Chamber office. Banquet tickets can be purchased for the evening’s festivities at the Chamber office for $20 each. For more information, please call Genie, the Salem Chamber Director, at 729-6900.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a disturbance, a traffic violation, an intoxicated driver, and trespassing. On Saturday, October 2nd at 11:30 a.m. an officer was detailed to the 200 block of West Rolla Road in reference to a disturbance that led to the arrest of a 32-year old man from Boss for burglary, assault and resisting arrest. He was incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. Also arrested was a 27-year old Salem man for the possession of synthetic narcotics, possession of marijuana and the possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also incarcerated pending the issuance of a warrant. At 10:35 p.m. that same evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem man for driving while his license was suspended and other traffic violations. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Sunday morning, October 3rd at 3:30, an officer was notified of a possible intoxicated driver. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22-year old Salem woman for driving while drugged and driving while having her license suspended. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released to a family member. Then at 12:50 that afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a subject that was trespassing. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem woman. She had previously been arrested for shoplifting at Wal-Mart and was issued an order by Wal-Mart not to be on their premises. She was issued a summons to appear in court on the trespassing charge and was released. At 3:00 later that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East Hawkins in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the detention of a 13-year old juvenile for throwing rocks at a residence. The juvenile was released to a parent and the report will be forwarded to the juvenile authorities.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will travel to Union to face the Owensville Dutchgirls in the first round of District play. Salem is seeded 4th in district while the Dutchgirls are seeded 5th. The game begins at 4:30 on the south field. The cost of admission is $4.00. If you can’t make it to the game, you can hear the contest on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The winner of the game will face #1 seed Sullivan Thursday at 5:00 on the North Field at Union

Cameron Howard scored on runs of 20 and 66 yards to lead the 7th Grade Football Tigers over Cabool, 26-12. Derek McClain also scored for Salem as well as Trystan Dubois who caught a six-yard TD pass from Dylan Wisdom.

The 8th Grade Tigers football team beat the Cabool Bulldogs 14-0. Justin Appleberry scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter and a 2-yard run in the third quarter. Both the 7th and 8th grade teams will finish out their season on Thursday, October 14th at home against West Plains.

Funeral services for Billie Gene (Bill) Casey of Salem, age 61, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held today from 5:00 to 7:00. Memorials may be made to the DCAI.

Funeral services for Kenny Setzer of Steelville, age 43, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Kegan Derek Chamberlain of Salem, age 21, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses.

Memorial services for Bessie “Jackie” Mae Leonard of Rolla, age 60, will be held Friday night at 7:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Animal Shelter.
