The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent Courthouse for the regular meeting. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5410, 6040, 6190, 6200, 6575 and 6590. He also said that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 6493 and 6495, and that a driveway culvert was going to be installed on Dent County Road 4240. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that the District 2 road crew would be repairing the chip and sealed Dent County 4240 which was damaged in the May 8th storm and is a FEMA project. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the commissioners would be meeting with Jamie Jadwin of the Dent County Health Center Wednesday at noon to discuss health concerns associated with the flu. He will also be attending a number of MRPC meetings on Thursday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that another FEMA project worksheet has been signed off by FEMA in the amount of $17,771.96 bringing the total to $248,075.28. At the last meeting, Sheriff Rick Stallings and Larry Goldberg from GS & M came in to discuss the jail needs of Dent County. Stallings is concerned with the jail capacity and the conditions of the current jail, and Goldberg made a proposal for GS & M to do a study of the current jail situation, future needs and alternatives for funding. Commissioner Larson made a motion to go ahead with the study if the proposal follows what was discussed at the meeting and the commissioners approved his motion. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Dent County Commissioners held their quarterly meeting in front of a small audience Monday night. At the meeting, they reviewed where the county stands after three quarters of the year. Much of what has happened has been the work to repair the damage from the May 8th storm and the commissioners saluted their road crews as well as Charlie and Rusty for being on top of the paperwork. The general revenue fund is down, and the road and bridge department has kept down expenses and are under budget.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for the week. On Tuesday, September 29th at about 5:20 p.m. an officer was contacted at the Salem Police Department in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report revealed an 18 year-old male of Salem had assaulted a 19 year-old male of Salem. On Thursday, October 1 at approximately 8:30 p.m. an officer contacted a 45-year-old Salem man in the 200 block of S. Warfel in reference about a warrant for his arrest. The investigation led to his arrest on a felony warrant from the State of California. He was incarcerated pending his extradition to California. On Saturday, October 3 at approximately 8:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 600 block of E. Fourth St. in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed sometime between 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., a person or persons unknown removed a small table valued at $10.00 from the yard of the residence. Later that night at approximately 9:00 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of S. Henderson in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that on September 26th between 7:00 and 11:00 p.m., a person or persons unknown removed an I-POD valued at $150.00 from the residence. On Sunday, October 4 at approximately 9:20 a.m. an officer was sent to the BP Convenience Store in reference to shoplifting. The investigation revealed that two male subjects took a bag of chips valued at $1.50 without paying. The subjects left the area in a blue car. A total of $4,380.00 was raised during the Rose Holland Trout Derby over this past weekend. A total of 76-tagged fish were caught. Jeff Woodson of St. Peters caught the men’s heaviest trout weighing in at 9 pounds and 12 ounces. Sharon Eudy of Wood River, Illinois caught a 3 pound 14 ounce trout for the women’s heaviest and Shannon Sutton of Potosi caught the heaviest brown trout over 15inches weighing in at 3 pounds. In the kids category, Carson Gaines of Washington, DC came in first with a stringer totaling 4 pounds and 12 ounces, Nick Sharp of St. Louis came in second with 4 pounds and 10 ounces and coming in third in the kids category was Terry Pelczynski of Ashley, Illinois with 4 pounds and 8 ounces. Gene Toman of Salem caught a 7-pound lunker of the nine lunkers caught during the Rose Holland Trout Derby.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Rolla Lady Bulldogs in their Netcoming contest tonight. The festivities will take place between the junior varsity and varsity matches. You can hear the varsity contest on KSMO Radio and about 7:20.
Major League Baseball announced on Monday that Chris Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals won the National League 2009 Comeback Player of the Year Award. Carpenter, who made just four starts combined in 2007 and 2008, went 17-4 with an NL-best 2.24 earned run average over 28 starts in 2009 to re-establish himself as a Cy Young Award candidate. The 34-year-old recorded three complete games and one shutout while helping St. Louis capture the NL Central title for the first time since 2006. With 192 2/3 innings pitched this season, Carpenter has allowed just 156 hits and 38 walks while striking out 144 batters. During the months of July and August, Carpenter, who captured the 2005 NL Cy Young Award, went 9-0 with a 2.00 ERA. He dominated divisional opponents in 15 starts, going 11-0 with a 1.58 ERA.
The St. Louis Cardinals will be at Los Angeles for the first two games of the divisional series with game one set at 8:25 Wednesday night. Game 2 will be Thursday afternoon at 4:50 or Thursday night at 8:25.
St. Louis Blues have assigned goaltender Ben Bishop to Peoria (AHL).

Funeral services for Elsie L. Camden of Salem, age 94, will be held today at 1:00 at the Dent County memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 10:00 this morning until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Relay for Life.
A memorial service for James Lloyd (Buddy) Bacon of Salem, age 68, will be held tonight at 7:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Stone Hill Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Liberty Baptist Church.
Funeral services for Flora Short of Maryland Heights Missouri, age 101, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 2:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.
Funeral services for Alice Floyd of Alton Missouri, age 91, will be held Thursday at 12:00 at the Central Community Church of God in Rolla. Visitation will be from 10:30 until time of service. Interment will be in the Rolla Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Michael T. Brinkman of West Carrolton, Ohio, age 43, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.
