The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that conditions are too dry for grading. Commissioner Simpson said that a crew would be pulling ditches and hauling material to Dent County Roads 637 and 640. Simpson also said that crews would be cutting brush and installing a culvert on Dent County Road 408 and hauling gravel and cutting brush in the Custer area. Commissioner Tune reported that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 238 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 254. Tune also said that a crew would be replacing road signs throughout District 2. Presiding Commissioner Jim Biggs reported that the Commission would be meeting MRPC Monday morning at 9:00 in the City Council Chambers. Many concerned citizens attended the meeting to discuss with the Commission their concern over the proposed FEMA plan, such as how it would affect the citizens of Dent County and their property, and is the plan really necessary since an emergency plan already exists. All three Commissioners stated that Dent County has not adopted the plan, nor have they discussed it with MRPC. Commissioner Biggs said the Commission would not adopt a plan that would not be beneficial to the citizens of Dent County. The Commission said they would know more about this topic after Mondays meeting. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County 4-H members are holding their Annual Recognition Night program, Saturday, October 14th beginning at 6:00 in the Youth Building at The Commons. The evening will begin with a dinner followed by the Awards Ceremony. All 4-H families are asked to bring two covered dishes and table service. Meat, bread and drinks will be provided. This is a great time to celebrate the year's accomplishments and honor those who have worked so hard in 4-H. For more information call 729-3196.

The Dent County Sheriff's Department released their report involving five separate reports of stealing from a motor vehicle between September 30th and October 2nd. Three of the reports were from residents located off of Dent County Road 411, one was located off of Dilworth Street and one was a business located off of Highway JJ. Reported taken from various vehicles were cash, 12-inch JL audio speakers in a custom box with gray carpet, compact discs and cases, a HP digital camera with SD card, a black camera case, a Realistic portable scanner, a compact disc titled New & Old Testament, a compact disc round black case, a portable compact disc player, a compact disc to cassette player adapter power supply, a hunting knife with a leather case, two tool boxes, a radar detector and a radio. Anyone with any information regarding any or all of the reports of stealing from motor vehicles is asked to please contact the Dent County Sheriff's Department at 729-3241.

The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce their 1st Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest. Entries will be checked in on October 30th and displayed Halloween night at the Farmers Market. Entry forms are available at the Chamber Office located at 200 South Main. For more information you can stop by or call the Chamber Office at 729-6900. Trick of Treating will be on Tuesday, October 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The Dent County License Bureau and some other state offices will be closed on Monday, October 9th in observance of Columbus Day.

The Salem Football Tigers will be at Willow Springs tonight to face the Bears. The Tigers are 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in the SCA. Albert Pujols went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-0 shutout of the San Diego Padres in Game 2 of the National League Division Series at Petco Park. St. Louis has won the first two games of the best-of-five set and will have a chance to eliminate San Diego from the playoffs in Game 3. Jim Edmonds had an RBI while Preston Wilson scored for the Cardinals. Jeff Weaver (1-0) picked up the win, giving up two hits while walking three and striking out three in five scoreless innings. St. Louis will send Jeff Suppan to the mound against Chris Young in Game 3 starting at noon on Saturday and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Curtis Brown's return to the Sharks was a slamming success, as he scored the winning goal 2:12 into overtime in a 5-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Bill Guerin scored the tying goal with 5.6 seconds left in the third period for the Blues. Lee Stempniak, Dan Hinote and Jamal Mayers all scored for the Blues while manny Lagace stopped 29 of 34 shots in the OT loss. The Blues will be in Los Angeles Saturday night and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Alta Marie LeFever of Los Angeles, California, formerly of Edgar Springs, age 74, will be this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Rolla. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery.

Funeral services for Jimmy J.Arthur of Rolla, age 79, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the Highway 63 Church of Christ Building Fund.

Funeral services for Caroline M. (Corley) Elgin of St. James, age 92, in be Sunday at 1:00 at the Trinity Episcopal Church In St. James. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Episcopal Church in St. James.

Funeral services for Opal Irene Ard of Salem, age 89, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Empire Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Empire Cemetery.
