The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5650 and 6400 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5440. Purcell reported that repairs were being made to truck 115 and one man was screening brown rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4030, 4040, and 2330 and materials would be added to Dent County Road 2380. He said that crews were cutting brush on Dent County Roads 3233, 3235, 2630, 2640 and 2620. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management Executive Board meeting Tuesday and the Board reviewed fourteen applications for recycling and other waste reduction applications funds, which are raised from the tipping fees at landfills and transfer stations. All were approved and among those submitted was the Dent County University Extension for a Composting Education Program. He also attended a County Commissioners Association of Missouri meeting on Wednesday to review legislative priorities and discuss the training for the commissioners to be held in February of 2013. Skiles stated that legislative priorities identified to be presented to the Association members included budget law amendments, the Supreme Court ruling on vehicle sales tax, and electronic monitoring of jail inmates to reduce costs. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reminds everyone that the deadline to register to vote in the General Election is October 10th. She also said that if you have moved or had a name change to please contact her office at 729-4144. She stated that absentee voting continues at the courthouse but you must have a reason to vote absentee in the state of Missouri. Absentee voting is available Monday through Friday during regular business hours and will also be held on Saturday, November 3rd from 8:00 AM until noon. Curley also wants to remind people that they should review a copy of the sample ballot because of the number of issues on the ballot. She stated copies of the sample ballot would be available in her office two weeks prior to the election and also in the Salem News. Curley also stated that her office and the Treasurer balanced on all accounts for September and that the Collector and Assessor balanced on all ad-ons and abatements for September. She stated that she would be conducting a voter registration at Salem High School Friday. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in Sheriff’s Department expenses for approval. Skiles reminded everyone that the Court House will be closed Monday for Columbus Day. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding their next regular meeting on Tuesday, October 9th at noon at Southwest Baptist University located at 501 South Grand, beginning at noon. Dennis P. Pryor, Hospital Administrator, will be introducing the newest physician to join our community, Dr. Vicky Gulley, as well as other current health care issues. The hospital recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and Pryor will emphasize the hospital’s “Commitment to Caring” for our community. The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Wednesday, September 19th at 2:15 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted by Children’s Division in reference to a 33-year old Salem male injecting his 11-year old female juvenile daughter with bath salts. Later on that evening at 6:38, an officer made contact with a 59-year old Salem male in the 400 block of East Franklin who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County for possession of a controlled substance. He was taken into custody and incarcerated with a $20,000 cash only bond. On Thursday, September 20th at 12:37 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the high school in reference to a theft of fuel. That investigation revealed that someone took around 800 gallons of fuel stored on site valued at $3,900. Please contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242 if you have any information regarding the theft or the bath salt incident, which are still under investigation.

The Union Lady Wildcats scored seven runs in the first inning, and then four more in the third and fourth innings to beat the Salem Lady Softball Tigers in the district semi-final, 15-3. Samantha Parker hit a solo homer and Kristin Hemken had two hits for the Lady Tigers who finished the year with a 15-6-1 record.
The Salem Tiger football team will be in Mountain Grove tonight to face the Panthers at 7:00. Salem is 5-1 on the year 2-1 in the SCA. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio 1340 AM and online at ksmoradio.com.
Sam Bradford connected on a pair of touchdown passes and was aided by a stifling defense as the St. Louis Rams downed the Arizona Cardinals, 17-3. Bradford completed just 7-of-21 passes for 141 yards with an interception for St. Louis (3-2), which has won its last two games to push its record over the .500 mark for the first time since 2006. Robert Quinn collected three sacks to lead a defensive unit that racked up nine sacks of Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb. Steven Jackson carried the ball 18 times for 76 yards, while Chris Givens and Lance Kendricks each caught a touchdown in the win. The Rams play the Miami Dolphins next Sunday.
The St. Louis Cardinals will be in Atlanta today to face the Braves in the one game Wild Card playoff. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio at 3:32. The winner will move on to play the Nationals in the NLDS on Sunday.
The Missouri Tigers will host Vanderbilt on Saturday. Mizzou is 3-2 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio at 5:00.
The Kansas City Chiefs will host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Kansas City is 1-3 on the year and kick-off is at noon.
