The 48^th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby was held this past weekend. Proceeds from registrations totaled $3,798; the store, bake shop and auction raised $1,996.05; the sale of hearts, souvenir shirts, face painting, and the Cruise-in Car Show raised $3,571.91; and with donations there was a total of $10,065.96 raised with proceeds going to the American Heart Association. There were 956 tags sold on Saturday, another 764 sold on Sunday which brought the total tags sold to 1,720. There were a total of 49-tagged fish caught and 10 lunkers were also caught during the derby. Doyle Hood of Licking caught two lunker’s weighing in at six pounds, 13 ounces; and two pounds, three ounces. Keven Rudy of Montauk also caught a lunker that weighed five pounds, five ounces. The Men’s Heaviest Fish was caught by Doyle Hood of Licking weighing in at 6 pounds, 13 ounces; the Women’s Heaviest Fish caught by Shannon Earhart of Columbia weighed one pound, 9 ounces; and the Heaviest Brown Trout was also caught by Doyle Hood of Licking and it weighed in at two pounds, three ounces. A total of 34 kids entered the Heaviest Stringer Contest. Coming in 1^st Place was Patrick Potts of Licking with a stringer weighing in at five pounds, eight ounces; 2^nd Place was Anthony Robbs of Bonne Terre with a five pounds, seven ounce stringer; and in 3^rd Place was Greg Headrick of Salem with a stringer weighing four pounds, 14 ounces.

The Salem Police Department released their reports. On Monday, September 26^th at 8:15 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Calloway County to work in a joint investigation to recover stolen property. During the investigation, numerous household items including an air conditioner, surveying equipment, golf clubs, and a U-Haul truck were recovered. Many other items were also recovered. The value of the items recovered is unknown at this time but is believed to be at least several thousand dollars. On Tuesday, September 27^th at 11:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a 30-year old male had took a Husqvarna chainsaw valued at $700 from an outbuilding in the 100 block of West Hunt. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. At that same time at 11:00 in the morning, another officer made contact with a 28-year old male of Laquey and a 27-year old female of Newburg, both of whom had active fugitive warrants from the Rolla Police Department. They were taken into custody and later released on bond with a court date. At 12:37 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Walnut Motel in reference to a disturbance. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 32-year old male of Salem for trespassing. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At the same time at 12:37 in the afternoon, another officer was detailed to the Walnut Motel in reference to children wondering in the parking lot unattended. The investigation led to the arrest of a 32-year old female of Salem for endangering the welfare of a child. She was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant. The Dent County Health Center will be holding a Flu Vaccination Clinic on Thursday, October 6^th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  The clinic will be held at the Salem Freedom Activity Center and is open to the general public. The Centers for Disease Control is recommending that everyone 6 months and older be vaccinated against the flu. The price of the flu vaccinations is $25. They will bill Medicaid and Medicare, but you must bring your card.

Three students from Salem made the All-District Honor Choir and they are Mitch Lo, Sarah Watts, and Adam Wood. Six students also made the All-District Concert Choir and they include Josh Brown, Haley Cason, Canyon Goodbar, Zach Greenwood, Ray Ritchey, and Cassidy Wood. Congratulations!

On Saturday, October 8^th, visitors will have two opportunities to explore the wonders of nature at Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg. During the day, they can enjoy Nature's Canvas and Recycled Art in the Park, and in the evening they can take a historical tour of Onondaga Cave. Nature’s Canvas and Recycled Art in the Park, which will be from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., is co-sponsored by Onondaga Cave State Park and the Onondaga Friends Association and is free. Activities include instruction in designing art from material found in nature, from recycled materials and from other found-object art. At 7:00 p.m. that evening, visitors can take a historical lantern tour of Onondaga Cave. This theatrical tour, co-sponsored by the Onondaga Friends Association, will be enhanced with characters from Onondaga Cave's past as they highlight the history of the cave. Space for the tour is limited and advance reservations are required. A fee of $22 for adults and $12 for children 11 to 14 will apply. While small children are welcome, this tour is designed for an adult audience. Proceeds will be used by the Onondaga Friends Association to enhance interpretive services at the park. Onondaga Cave State Park is located seven miles southeast of the Leasburg exit off of Interstate 44 on Highway H. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers lost to the Rolla Bulldogs Tuesday night in two straight games, 25-9 and 25-18. The Lady Tigers remain winless, as they will host Thayer next Tuesday.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will face St. Clair tonight in the first round of District play in Sullivan at 6:30. You can hear that game on a delayed basis after the Cardinals game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Ben Francisco's pinch-hit, seventh-inning three-run home run snapped a scoreless contest as the Philadelphia Phillies claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of this NL Division Series from Busch Stadium. Albert Pujols finished 4-for-5 with three doubles, and David Freese knocked in a run for the Cardinals. Jaime Garcia was tagged in defeat for three runs on six hits over seven full frames. Funeral services for Kimberly Ann Rimes of Boss, age 47, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Memorials may be made to the Kimberly Ann Rimes Memorial Fund.
