The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams was at the meeting to let the Commissioners know that she will try to have paychecks done around 3:00 on payday, but not later than 3:15 on payday after she has had some complaints. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 6280, 6285 and 6400, and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5630. Purcell also said that workers went to get a load of oil for chip and seal repair. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3150, 3160, 3305, 4290 and 4430, while materials will be added and grading will be done on Dent County Road 2120. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3180. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he requested to be on the agenda at the Missouri Conservation Commissioners meeting on October 15^th in Kirksville to discuss the elk restoration. He also set the commissioner’s quarterly meeting for Monday, October 18^th at 7:00 at the Judicial Building. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind anyone who wants to register to vote that they must do so by this Wednesday. At the last meeting, the Dent County Commission agreed to purchase a used 2007 Chevy Tahoe from Oklahoma with the law enforcement package and four-wheel drive for the Sheriff’s Department for $21,500. The commission accepted bids for the purchase of the Tahoe from Progressive Ozark Bank, US Bank and the Bank of Salem. The bid was awarded to the Bank of Salem for a three-year lease for $22,000 at 3.04%. Also at the meeting, the Commissioners talked with Billy Walker about a sewer odor in the Assessor’s office and agreed to have him check the problem out over the weekend while the courthouse is closed. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the city hall council chambers. The board postponed discussion on the existing pole agreements and franchise fees until the next meeting at the request of City Attorney Nanci Wisdom. The board then approved the liquor license for the Cozumel Mexican Restaurant that does not allow Sunday sales by a 3-1 vote with Alderman Brad Nash voting against the issuance of the license.  Mayor Gary Brown said that 45 letters for property cleanup were mailed last week and the nuisance officer issued four tickets and was to issue four more on the north side of town only. He will check the south side of the city today. Brown said that the city received a recycling grant for $19,000 that will provide another trailer and bins, and also provide for part time labor for up to a year. He also said that he talked with the elementary school principal about teachers parking in the City Hall East Parking lot taking away parking spaces for the license bureau and other businesses. Nanci Wisdom said that a one-hour parking limit is not the solution because many employees of those businesses on 4^th Street have to park there. The mayor reported that Verkamp and Malone have started their annual city audit, and that the Yard Sale this past Saturday was a success. He indicated that some of the streets were paved with asphalt last week while Hunt Street was not. That street will be done this week. Brown also said that cleanup week will be held next week on your regular pick-up date where people can put out your appliances and trash at the curb, but not tires, oil, paint and batteries. A tire and electronic recycling day will be held on Saturday, October 16^th from 9:00 to 1:00 at Third and Grand Streets. The board voted unanimously against Bill #3208 that would have provided for a sidewalk on the south side of Route J from the City Park to the hiking and biking trail as it would have cost the city at least between $10,000 and $14,000 and the alderman feel that it would not be used enough since there is a sidewalk already on the other side of the street. The board did approve Resolution 2-2010 that allows the mayor to execute the agreements for the community development block grant for the storm water grant. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.

Friday night at the Homecoming festivities at the Salem High School football field, senior Ashley Greenshields was crowned the 2010 Homecoming Queen. Her court consisted of seniors Rachel Arts and Ashley Jadwin, junior Katy Vaughn and sophomore Olivia Elliot. Congratulations Ashley Greenshields!!
