The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that grading would be done in the Sinkin Township on Dent County Roads 551, 553 and 554.  Simpson also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 622 and gravel would be hauled into the crusher. Commissioner Simpson also wanted to report that the counties part in the IDA Project in the Industrial Park has been completed.  District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on various roads in the Anutt area and also in Boss on Dent County Road 532. Tune also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 258 and 260 and gravel would be hauled into the crusher. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that Ted Cunningham would be at Mondays meeting to introduce to the Commission the new Community Development Specialist. At 10:00, the Commission went into closed session to discuss real estate issues. At the previous meeting, Susan Cunningham from Spatial Data Research came in to update the Commission on rural addressing and Darrell Decker and Joe Martin with Gallagher Benefit Service came in to discuss the counties health insurance.  The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 High School will hold their football Homecoming tonight before the football game with Willow Springs. The sophomore attendant is Shala Plank, the junior attendant is Hannah Kettner, and the senior attendants are Sara Barton, Hannah Tilley and Lydia Thomas. This year’s escorts will be Justin Davis, Max Ball, Cass Jones, Tyler Washausen and Vincent Jackson.

The 21st annual Old Miners Days will be held today through Sunday in Viburnum. Today, there will be a Tiny Tot and Miss & Little Miss Viburnum contests. Saturday, Doe Run will conduct mine tours from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and there will be two parades, airplane rides, pony pulling, food and crafts booths and a whole lot more. On Sunday, October 7th, Old Miners Days will have a car show, kids games, horseshoe pitching, free entertainment, plus much more. Pirates of the Mississippi will be performing on Sunday at 6:30 pm. The annual University of Missouri Wurdack Field Day will begin with a lunch near the spring at 11:30 am this morning. There will be two wagon tours of the farm, the first at 1:30 and then one a 2:45. Nadia Navarette-Tindall will describe some of the native species of plants, Dr. Bob Weaver will discuss relationships between beef cattle, temperament and production traits on the forage beef tour. Dr. Justin Sexten will describe cowherd supplementation related to different forage qualities, Dr. Robert Kallenbach will provide information about how to allocate stockpiled tall fescue to fall-calving beef cows, and Dr. Hank Steizer will discuss Forestry Carbon Credits as an emerging program for timber owners. The Timber and Agro-forestry Tour will provide an update by Dusty Walter from the Agro-forestry Program at MU on Silvopasture Research Developments. The results show research plots on the farm timber that have been thinned encouraged higher quality timber and allowed forage production. The lunch, program and tours are open to the public and free.

The Salem Football Tigers will try to make it two in a row as they host the Willow Springs Bears in their homecoming game. The Tigers are 1-4 on the year while Willow Springs enters the game with a 2-3 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with Tiger Talk and Coach Bill Schuchardt at 6:25. The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers, both varsity and JV, will be in Lebanon this weekend for the Lebanon Tournament.

Mikael Tellqvist made 22 saves and Daniel Winnik's first NHL goal was the game-winner, as Phoenix edged St. Louis, 3-2, in the season-opener for both teams. Keith Tkachuk picked up a goal and an assist while Brad Boyes scored once for the Blues and Manny Legace stopped 31-of-34 shots in the loss. The Blues will face the Los Angeles Kings Saturday night at 9:30.

The St. Louis Blues signed veteran right wing Mike Johnson Thursday. The 6-foot-2, 202-pound forward played with the Montreal Canadiens last season and collected 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists) in 80 games.

The Missouri Tigers will host the Nebraska Cornhuskers tomorrow night at Faurot Field. Missouri goes into the game ranked 17th with a 4-0 record. You can hear the contest starting at 7:00 with the pre-game show on KSMO Radio.

The St. Louis Rams will miss four players for the team's contest Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Guard Adam Goldberg is out with a knee injury, running back Steven Jackson is sidelined with a partial tear of his groin, wide receiver Dane Looker has a thigh issue and linebacker Raonall Smith is nursing a right knee sprain. In addition, wide receiver Isaac Bruce and safety Corey Chavous did not practice on Wednesday.

A memorial service for Wayne Barrett, age 88, of St. James, formerly of Salem, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League.

Funeral services for Mary S. Holden of Rolla, age 84, will be held this morning at the Chapel of Memories at the Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Feed the Children. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Harry W. Johns of Salem, age 92, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for William “Bill” Burns of Bunker, age 91, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church or the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department.
