The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 4160, 5480 and 6230, and that materials were being hauled to county roads 6420 and 5450. Purcell went on to say that he had a crew changing the tires on truck #117.  Commissioner Purcell reported that someone had dumped approximately one half pickup load of outdated Post Dispatch newspaper bundles in the middle of Dent County Road 5015, also known as the Doss Road. He pointed out that a grader had to go to the location and move the bundles into the ditches and that a backhoe and truck would have to go back and remove them from the ditches.  Purcell noted that citizens should call the sheltered workshop at 729-6264 to dispose of papers and if anyone had information about the dumped papers to please call the Dent County Sheriff’s Department.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Road 5330 and that brush was being cut on county roads 4380, 3233 and the City of Salem walking trail. Larson went on to say that materials were being hauled and crossover pipes were being installed on county roads 3290 and 2510. Commissioner Larson reported that Jenny Jones with MoDot had called and she was sending out letters indicating that the money had been secured for replacement of the low water bridge on county road 3210. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that on Tuesday he attended the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management Executive Board meeting where thirteen applications were reviewed and scored. Application requests totaled $289,536 and ranged in amounts from $7,500 to $32,685. The Board had $198,000 in grant monies to award. The City of Salem had the highest scoring grant application and was awarded $20,480 for a third recycling trailer and a full time employee to work with the recycling program.  kiles went on to say that he personally felt it was ridiculous that the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and the Park Service were closing off the Current River for public use. He said the river is still running and the trout are still biting so why is the public use being denied. Skiles went on to say that on Wednesday he had driven the Current River from Montauk to Round Springs. At that time he found the only barricades and signage announcing the closing were up on the roadway to Pulltite and at Round Springs. Signage notification was up at Sinkin, but no barricade.Skiles said that the Park Service is making every effort beyond their authority to inflict pain to the public due to the government shutdown. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she and Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams balanced on all accounts for September. Curley went on to say that she balanced with Dent County Collector Dennis Medlock and Dent County Assessor Tina Whitaker on all collections, abatements and add-ons for September.  Curley added that the Commissioners had reviewed all reports and that they were paying bills today. At 10:00 the Commission went into closed session to discuss the security system. At 11:00 Darrell Decker and Joe Martin with the county’s insurance consortium were in to discuss the latest contract bids from Cox Health. The Commissioners approved the contract renewal with an increase in premiums of 9.0%. However, due to the Affordable Care Act, there is an additonal 3.6% in taxes and fees that the county must pay to make the total increase in cost to the county of 12.6% for health insurance. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
