The 49th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby will be held on Saturday, October 6th and Sunday, October 7th at Montauk State Park. Participants will have the opportunity to fish for tagged trout during this popular fishing derby. Anglers catching tagged trout will receive prizes awarded on Sunday just after the derby ends at 12:00 (noon). An Old Time Cruise-In Car Show will be held at the Searcy Building on Friday night at 4:00 pm and Nature Bingo for prizes, will be held on Friday at 6:00 pm at the campground amphitheater. "Hikes for your Heart" will be held on Saturday plus other activities will fill the weekend with fun, entertainment and excitement for all. The City Wide Yard Sale will be held this Saturday, October 6th. Yard sales will occur all over town and maps are available at convenience stores, the City Administration building and the Chamber Office located in the Visitors Center. Maps were also printed in the Salem News. A central sale will be held behind the City Administration building downtown.
In partnership with the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways has brought the traveling Lincoln: The Constitution and The Civil War exhibit to Salem, one of the park’s gateway communities. Superintendent Bill Black stated that this exhibit is a win-win situation for both organizations as the park wanted to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Camp Lincoln on the Current River with the exhibit, but we lacked the space necessary for display. The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center was approached and agreed to house the exhibition for the park. The Lincoln: The Constitution and The Civil War exhibit is free and open for public viewing now through November 10th, at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Center located at 202 South Main Street in Salem. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. More viewing times and group visits are available by appointment. From Salem, the exhibit travels to the White House Visitor Center in Washington D.C., one of its many stops during the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and the Crawford County Commission, in partnership with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District (ORSWMD) and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), will offer a free waste tire collection from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 6th at the Crawford County Road Department Shed located at 107 Euclid Road in Steelville. Waste tires of all kinds will be accepted at this collection, and no fees will be charged. Participants must unload all tires themselves. Tires will not be accepted from businesses. The collection is open to any households in the Ozark Rivers District, including Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski, and Washington counties. Samantha Parker's diving catch with two out in the top of the 7th inning on a line drive by KayCee Orlando ended the St. James comeback and allowed the Salem Lady Softball Tigers to advance to the district semi-final with a 9-8 win over St. James. Parker was 2-4 with 2 RBI, Emily Moser went 3-4 with two RBI, Kaytlyn Wells went 3-4 with an RBI, and Taylor Frizzell also had a 3-4 night. Ashlyn Cook had two hits and RBI for Salem who improved to 14-5-1 on the year. The Lady Tigers will face Union today at 4:30 at Sullivan in the semi-final game and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. The game can also be seen on a delayed basis on Fidelity Cable Local 6. The cost of admission to the game is $4.00 for those six years of age and above.
Matt Carpenter's go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the regular season finale. Shelby Miller threw six scoreless innings while only giving up one hit and striking out seven. The defending-champion Cardinals (88-74), who clinched the National League's second wild card spot on Tuesday, will travel to Atlanta to take on the Braves on Friday and you’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO starting at 3:32. The winner will advance to the division series and take on the Washington Nationals in the opening game on Sunday.
Detroit won the final game of the season against Kansas City, 1-0, but the real story of the night was Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera becoming the first player in 45 years to win a Triple Crown, as he finished the season with a batting average of .330 along with 44 home runs and 139 RBI. Alcides Escobar and Johnny Giavotella each had two hits for the Royals, who finished a ninth straight losing season. Luis Mendoza (8-10) gave up the one run on six hits over seven innings. The Royals finished third in the AL Central with a 72-90 record.
The St. Louis Rams will take on the undefeated Arizona Cardinals tonight. The Rams are 2-2 on the year and kickoff is scheduled for 7:20.
The Kansas City Chiefs placed tight end Kevin Boss on injured reserve on Wednesday. Boss suffered a concussion in the second game of the season at Buffalo. He caught three passes for 65 yards and a touchdown in two games this season. The Chiefs used the roster spot to sign Bryan Kehl, a linebacker out of BYU.

Funeral services for Glenna Enloe of Festus, age 82, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Festus and the March of Dimes.
