The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. Commissioner Dennis Purcell was not in attendance due to a previous commitment. In the road report, District 1 Road Supervisor Rusty Chamberlain said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4220 and 5530, and that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 6580. He also stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2440. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 2315, 2403, 4350, and 4353. He also stated that materials would be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2313, 2510, and 4300. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that two people from Dent County would be honored for their volunteer work in Dent County at the MRPC Annual Dinner to be held in November in Maries County. He said that Jacob Kettner would be honored for his contributions as a youth to the community, and that James Coffman is also going to be honored for his voluntary work for many years. There was a question presented to the commissioners about the potholes on Dent County Road 3260. Commissioner Larson stated that the county just purchased a new overlay machine from Iron County and the road crew is going to try it out on that road next week. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports of shoplifting, thefts, a disturbance, and a fight. On Friday, September 23^rd at 9:02 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of North Pershing in reference to a theft from an RV. The investigation revealed that person or persons unknown entered the RV and took an RV power cable valued at $195. At 8:51 that evening, an officer was detailed to the 1200 block of West Franklin in reference to a fight in progress. The investigation revealed an 18-year old male and a 46-year old male, both of Salem, had been assaulted by an unknown male that came and knocked on the door of the residence. After assaulting the two, the suspect was seen walking east on Franklin with another unidentified male. On Saturday, September 25^th at 12:38 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Gateway at 403 West Fourth in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that person or persons unknown took coins out of a display case. The value of the coins is unknown at this time. At 1:27 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation led to the arrest of a 54 year-old female of Salem for stealing merchandise valued at $22.45. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Moments later at 1:42 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 400 block of East Acuff in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 26-year old male of Salem for disorderly conduct and failure to obey a lawful order of a police officer. He was issued summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with information regarding the thefts and the fight, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind drivers to watch for deer, which are more active this time of year. Drivers should be especially vigilant during evening and early dawn hours. Deer behavior changes due to mating season, which may cause an increase in roadway crossings. Hunting and crop harvesting may result in these animals being in places they aren’t usually seen. Drivers are urged to remain alert. Last year, drivers in Missouri experienced 3,420 traffic crashes where deer-vehicle strikes occurred. One deer strike occurred every 2.6 hours in the state. In these crashes, two people were killed and 352 injured. When you see deer, slow down and proceed with caution. Deer often travel in groups, stay on guard after a close call or when you see one deer. In areas where there are streams or wooded corridors surrounded by farmland, look for more deer to cross roadways. Remember: Rural areas are not the only place where deer/vehicle strikes occur. The majority of deer strike crashes occur from October through December each year, with the largest number taking place in November. Most deer strikes occur between the hours of 5:00 pm and 6:59 am. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reminds drivers that an attempt to avoid striking a deer could result in a more serious crash involving oncoming traffic. Try to remain calm. Panicking and overreacting usually lead to more serious traffic crashes. Please stay alert, and make sure you and the occupants of your vehicle buckle up.

MacKenzie Wulff went 4 for 4 and had an RBI as the Salem Lady Softball Tigers beat Mountain View/Liberty 11-5 in the final game before District play. Darian Grogan pitched 5 1/3 innings to get the win as Salem moves to 17-7 on the year. The 3^rd seeded Lady Tigers will face St. Clair in the first round of District play on Wednesday in Sullivan.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers will host the Rolla Bulldogs tonight at the Salem High School Gym with the JV contest at 6:00 followed by the varsity. The varsity game can be heard on KSMO Radio, online at ksmoradio.com, and can be seen on Fidelity Local 6 cable channel. 

The 7th Grade Football Tigers got in the win column Thursday night against the Cabool Bulldogs with a score of 22-0. Eli Floyd scored twice and Zak Eplin added another touchdown. The 8^th grade team also beat Cabool with a score of 28-6 to even. Derek McClain caught a touchdown pass and ran for another to help them even up their record at 2-2 on the year. Aaron Hodges and Tristan Dubois also scored for Salem who will play at Houston on Thursday.

The National League Division Series shifts to St. Louis for Game three as the Cardinals host the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. Jaime Garcia and Cole Hamels will be the pitching match-up as the series is tied at 1-1. The pregame show will start at 3:32 on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for Kimberly Ann Rimes of Boss, age 47, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Viburnum. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Memorials may be made to the Kimberly Ann Rimes Memorial Fund.
