An accident occurred at 5:10 Saturday morning in Crawford County on Birds Nest Road in Steelville that took the life of a Steelville man. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2001 Chevrolet driven by Kenneth R. Setzer of Steelville, was traveling north on Birds Nest Road. The accident occurred as the Chevy failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a mailbox. The Chevy then struck a tree and came to a rest on its wheels. Setzer was pronounced dead at the scene by the Crawford County Coroner Paul Hutson. Setzer was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and was removed from the scene by Miles Towing.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at 7:00 in the City Hall council chambers. After the roll call and the consent agenda, City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will discuss the current existing pole agreements and franchise fees. Then the liquor license for Cozumel Mexican Restaurant will be discussed. At the previous meeting, no vote was taken on the issue. Mayor Gary Brown will then report on the storm water grant, the recycling grant, hear aldermen reports, and he will discuss the setting of a one hour time limit at the City Hall’s east parking lot. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present Bill #3208 and Resolution number 2-2010 for approval. Bill #3208 would create an ordinance to authorize the Mayor to execute a contract between the City of Salem and the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission to provide for construction of a sidewalk along Route J form the park to the Salem bike/hike trail. Resolution #2-2010 is required in order for the Mayor to sign documents required for the City to receive the Storm Water Grant funding. After the bills are presented for approval, the Board will then adjourn. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.

The Dent County Health Center has received flu shots, and they will be available daily Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The shots will cost $25. They will bill Medicaid and Medicare Part B, but you will need to bring your cards with you. The Dent County Health Center is located 601 South MacArthur and for more information you can call 729-3106.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving shoplifting and a theft. On Wednesday, September 29^th at 11:50 a.m. an officer was detailed to K&H Auto Supply in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report led to the arrest of a 22 year-old male of Salem for stealing $8.00 in merchandise. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a purse and contents valued at $115.00 from a vehicle parked in the US Post Office parking lot. The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will conduct their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 5^th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, the Board will address the financial report, pay bills, discuss the 2011 budget and a signature card update. There will be a calendar review and the monthly reimbursement report. In old business, the Board will discuss propane bids, strategic planning and the status of the garage doors. In new business, there will be an updated inventory list and the Board will address Chief Brad Nash’s evaluation and his pay evaluation is due in November. Chief Nash will then updated the Board regarding October being fire safety month. The Board will then set their next monthly meeting for November 2^nd.

Ben Adams scored on a ten-yard run in the first quarter and Jonathan Hambacker grabbed a 21-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Smith just before half as the Salem Tigers held on to beat Ava Friday night, 14-6. Adams rushed for 90 yards in the defensive struggle as Salem improves to 4-2 on the year and in the SCA. The Tigers will host Cabool Friday night.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers will be at Mountain View today to face the Liberty Lady Eagles in the final regular season softball game. Salem enters the game with an 11-9 record and the game will begin at 4:30 today.

Matt Pagnozzi drove in two runs and Jeff Suppan tossed six scoreless innings, as the St. Louis Cardinals handled the Colorado Rockies, 6-1, in the season finale. Joe Mather and Brendan Ryan each had an RBI for the Cardinals (86-76), who ended the year with a five-game winning streak. Suppan (3-8) gave up five hits to go with five strikeouts and one walk.

Rocco Baldelli scored the game-deciding run on a fielding error by Wilson Betemit, giving AL East champion Tampa Bay a 3-2 victory over Kansas City in the season-finale for both clubs from Kauffman Stadium. Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer for the Royals (67-95), who finished with a losing record for the seventh straight year. Royals starter Sean O'Sullivan turned in six-plus scoreless frames, yielding two hits with three strikeouts and as many walks. Dusty Hughes (1-3) was charged with the deciding unearned run over 1 2/3 relief frames.

Sam Bradford passed for 289 yards and two touchdowns, as the St. Louis Rams snapped a 10-game losing skid to the Seattle Seahawks with a 20-3 win at the Edward Jones Dome. Bradford completed 23-of-41 throws with a pick while Brandon Gibson and Kenneth Darby each had a touchdown grab for the Rams (2-2), who defeated Washington last Sunday. The Rams won consecutive games for the first time since October 12-19, 2008.

Jonathan Toews finished with a goal and an assist, as the Chicago Blackhawks held off the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, in the preseason finale last night. T.J. Hensick and Patrik Berglund had third-period goals for St. Louis, which hosts Philadelphia on Saturday in its opener. B.J. Crombeen also lit the lamp in the loss, while Ty Conklin allowed all four goals on 24 shots.

Funeral services for Steven R. Cowan of Bunker, age 54, will be held today at 1:00 at the Bunker Tabernacle. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the West Fork Cemetery in Boss. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for John William Inman of Salem, age 57, will be held Tuesday morning at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Sons of the American Legion.

Funeral services for Kenny Setzer of Steelville, age 43, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 9:00. Interment will be in the Martin Cemetery in Cherryville.

Funeral services for Billie Gene (Bill) Casey of Salem, age 61, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the DCAI.

Funeral services for Kegan Derek Chamberlain of Salem, age 21, will be held Friday at 11 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 to 9:00. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for funeral expenses.
