The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on a new state park being proposed along the Current River north of Eminence in Shannon County. The process will begin with open houses the weekend of October 12
th – 14th. The new park is being proposed on property known as the historic Alton Club/Jerry J. Presley Conservation Education Center, which is currently owned by the Missouri Department of Conservation. In 2008, the Alton Club complex and its land will be transferred to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Governor Matt Blunt encouraged the departments of Natural Resources and Conservation to work together to create a new state park on the property. As with any new state park or historic site, the Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input to determine what facilities and services the public would like to see offered. The Department of Natural Resources staff will be seeking input at an Open House at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center, located at 202 South Main Street in Salem, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12th and Saturday, October 13th. There will be an Open House at the Scenic Riverways Arts and Crafts Show and Sale being held at the Circle B Campground on Highway 106 West in Eminence from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14th. You’ll also have an opportunity to offer you comments at the Open House being held at the dining lodge of Montauk State Park from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th and from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 14th. In addition to the open houses, the public may comment on the proposed park through an online survey, which will be available October 10th at
www.mostateparks.com/survey.html. Input will be accepted through October 31st. Department staff will use the input from the open houses and surveys to develop several alternative plans for the park. These plans will be presented to the public for further discussion. Missouri has not had a state park along the Current River since 1968 when Big Spring, Round Spring and Alley Spring state parks were transferred to the National Park Service to serve as the cornerstones of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The 44th Annual Rose Holland Trout Derby, with all proceeds going to benefit the American Heart Association, is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Montauk State Park. Derby registration will be held tomorrow from 5:00 to 9:00 pm, along with the “Cruise in at Montauk” Car Show from 4:00 to 9:00 and Trout Bingo beginning at 6:00. Then on Saturday, derby registration will be from 6:30 am to 9:00 and fishing will be from 7:30 to 6:30 pm. Also on Saturday, there will be a free health screening from 9:00 to noon by the Salem Memorial District Hospital, the Country Store and Bake Shop will be open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, face painting will be done from 10:00 until 1:00, the Radical Rompers will be there from 10:00 until 5:00, hikes will be held throughout the day, you can hear live entertainment from noon until 5:00, and the auction will begin at 5:30 in front of the lodge with Bill Edwards and Eudell Taylor. On Sunday, derby registration will be from 6:30 to 11:30 am and fishing from 7:30 to 11:30 am. Prizes awarded will begin at noon in front of the Lodge. Montauk State Park is located on Highway 119, 22 miles south of Salem.
On September 24th, the Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney and the Rolla Police Department requested the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop I Unit of the Division of Drug and Crime Control (D/DCC) initiate an investigation of possible sexual misconduct involving 31-year old Leonard J. Cook Jr., of Rolla. At the time, the University of Missouri Rolla Police Department employed Cook. Investigation by Patrol Investigators revealed that Cook had deviate sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old female and had downloaded child pornography on his personal computer. On October 2nd, members of the Troop I Division of Drug and Crime Control unit arrested Cook for second-degree statutory sodomy and possession of child pornography. Cook is being held in the Phelps County Jail pending the issuance of warrants. Any future information concerning this investigation will be disseminated by the Phelps County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Varsity Tigers lost to Lebanon Tuesday night in two straight games, 7-25 and 11-25. Salem was without Kirsten Stephens in the contest who was ill. Salem falls to 10-5-1 with the loss. The Salem Lady JV also fell in two straight games, 7-25 and 19-25. The Lady Volleyball Tigers will be back in Lebanon for the varsity and JV tournament this weekend.
St. Louis Blues will open their regular season tonight when they face Phoenix at 9:00 on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Cardinals and general manager and senior vice president Walt Jocketty have parted ways, the club announced Wednesday. Assistant general manager John Mozeliak has been named interim GM, and is in the running to earn the full-time job. The Cardinals, just a year after winning the World Series, stumbled to a 78-84 campaign in 2007. Hired in 1994, Jocketty has seen the Cardinals turn into perennial winners during his 13-year reign. During his time on the job, the Cardinals won six NL Central Division titles and one NL wild card, had two World Series appearances and the one win last season. He had one year left on his contract. It is unclear what effect, if any, Jocketty's departure will have on Tony La Russa's future as Cardinals manager. La Russa's contract expired after this season and, though he's been asked by St. Louis management to return in 2008, he has not made a decision.

A memorial service for Wayne Barrett, age 88, of St. James, formerly of Salem, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice or the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League.
Funeral services for Mary S. Holden of Rolla, age 84, will be held Friday morning at the Chapel of Memories at the Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Feed the Children. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Harry W. Johns of Salem, age 92, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services for William “Bill” Burns of Bunker, age 91, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Ohlman Missionary Baptist Church or the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department.
