An accident happened in Dent County on Dent County Road 568 about five miles from Bunker Saturday afternoon at 2:45. According to the highway patrol report, 80-year old Edna M. Happel of Bunker was driving a Yamaha Moto 4 southbound when she lost control of the vehicle and overturned. Happel suffered serious injuries and was taken by Air Evac to the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. The Yamaha sustained minor damage and was taken back to the residence by relatives.

An accident happened in Dent County on Dent County Road 325 about four miles from Salem Saturday afternoon at 2:55. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Ford driven northbound by 17-year old Lisa Hart of Salem, lost control on the gravel county road and traveled off the road and overturned. Hart and a passenger in the Ford, 29-year old Dwight Williams of Salem, suffered moderate injuries. Both were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. Niether were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident and the Ford sustained extensive damage. It was removed from the scene by Knight Towing of Salem.

An accident happened in Crawford County on Hobo Road about four miles from Davisville Sunday afternoon at 3:45. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Honda CRF Motorcycle driven by 23-year old Colette Woodfin of Steelville, drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Woodfin suffered moderate injuries and was taken by the Viburnum Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. There was little if any damage to the motorcycle and it was left at the scene.

Captain Randy Becker, Commanding Officer of Troop I, Rolla, of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded three traffic fatalities during the month of August 2006. Captin Becker wants to remind everyone that inattention, speeding and drinking are some of the major contributing circumstance for traffic crashes in Missouri. Everyone needs to adjust their speed to road and weather conditions as well as the amount of traffic persent. Do not drink and drive and never get into a vehicle with someone who has been drinking. Since we never know when we are going to be involved in a traffic crash, be prepared by buckling up. In Crawford County for August, there were 42 accidents with 17 injuries. In Dent County, there were 18 accidents with 14 injuries and one fatality. In Phelps County, there were 62 accidents with 36 injuries. Troop I, recorded three traffic fatalities during August 2006, which is the same as August 2005. The total fatalities for 2006 is 29 compared to 42 for the same time period as last year.

Damon Huard passed for two touchdowns, including a 34-yard strike to Eddie Kennison, and Dante Hall returned a punt 60 yards for another score as the Kansas City Chiefs hammered the San Francisco 49ers 41-0 at Arrowhead Stadium. Huard was 18-of-23 passing for 208 yards with a pair of scores and Larry Johnson added 101 yards rushing on 30 carries and two touchdowns in the win. The Chiefs (1-2) will travel to Arizona to play the Cardinals on Oct. 8.

Marc Bulger's five-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Bruce with 1:56 left gave St. Louis a 41-34 victory over Detroit at Edward Jones Dome. Bruce, who finished with 100 yards receiving on seven catches, also hauled in the two-point conversion to give the Rams a seven-point cushion. Bulger threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns on 26-of-42 passing and Steven Jackson rushed for 81 yards on 22 carries and one TD for the Rams (3-1), who have won two straight. Torry Holt had six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
Billy Jackson scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion as he rushed for 121 yards as the Salem Tigers shutout the Houston Tigers, 35-0. Salem finished with 282 rushing yards and held Houston to total of 91 yards in offense. Salem is now 4-1 and 2-1 in the SCA. They will be at Willow Springs Friday night.

Geoff Jenkins went 3-for-3 with a home run as the Milwaukee Brewers ended the season with a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. However, with Houston's 3-1 loss to Atlanta, St. Louis won the NL Central for the third straight season. The Cardinals open the postseason with a Tuesday contest in San Diego against the Padres. San Diego beat Arizona 7-6 on Sunday to win the NL West. Albert Pujols hit his career-best 49th homer while Chris Duncan and Scott Spiezio also hit long balls for the Cardinals, who ended the regular season with an 83-78 record. Anthony Reyes (5-8), who took the spot of Chris Carpenter on three days rest, lasted just two-thirds of an inning, yielding four runs on five hits. Carpenter is expected to start the first game of the playoffs for St. Louis on Tuesday at 3:00 against the San Diego Padres.

Esteban German played spoiler and the woeful Kansas City Royals blocked Detroit from capturing its first American League Central crown since 1987 by besting the Tigers, 10-8, in extra innings to complete a three game sweep. The loss, combined with Minnesota's 5-1 win over Chicago gave the Twins their fourth AL Central title in five years. Jimmy Gobble (4-6) finished things in the home half of the 12th to earn the win. The Tigers will enter the AL playoffs as the wild card and open the divisional series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night in the Bronx. German was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in for the Royals to end a disappointing 62-100 season. Brown was 2-for-5 with three RBI while Keppinger was 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Chase Daniel threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns, as 25th-ranked Missouri beat Colorado, 28-13, to remain unbeaten on the season. The Tigers (5-0, 1-0 Big 12) have won their opening five games of the season for the first time since 1981. Their six-game winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest in Missouri history. Daniel connected on 23-of-35 passes and was intercepted once, while Tony Temple rushed for 70 yards for Missouri. The Tigers play at Texas Tech next Saturday.

Funeral services for George Paul Lay of Scottsville, KY formerly of Bunker, age 73 will be held this morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Reynolds-Corridon Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Funeral services for Dollie M. Henry of Cook Station, age 67, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be from noon until service time today. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery in Phelps County.

Funeral services for Alta Marie LeFever of Los Angeles, California, formerly of Edgar Springs, age 74, will be held Friday morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Rolla. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemeterty. Memorials are suggested to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson Research Foundation in New York.
