The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning in the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that materials would be added to and grading done on Dent County Road 6640, while grading only would be done on county road 5520. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6350 and 4220.  District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Road 2510, while materials would be added to and grading would be done on county road 4330. He also said that two men were working on truck #110 and one man was working on the pavement roller. Larson stated that he had a work crew taking down the road signs in the former Gano Trailer Court. Larson said that the girders were set on Wednesday for the bridge on Dent County Road 3210 and that next week they should be pouring the floor, weather permitting.  Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the Commission needed to act on the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s letter relative to the “County Survey Re-monumentation Program.” The Department would reimburse $250 of the $500 fee to have the fifteen Dent County corners re-surveyed. The Commissioners agreed 3-0 to enter into the agreement. Skiles said the Commissioners needed to decide about signing up to be a “Military Order of the Purple Heart County.” The Commissioners agreed 3-0 to make the necessary contacts and prepare a resolution to become a Purple Heart County. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that she balanced with the County Treasurer on all accounts for the month of September. Curley also reminded citizens that October 8th is the deadline to register to vote for the November 4th General Election, and that absentee voting continues. She went on to say that anyone with a new address, a name change or that is in need of a new voter identification card should call or come by her office. Curley added that bills were being paid today. The next meeting of the Commissioners is at 9:00 Monday morning in the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Monday, September 22nd at 10:10 that night, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation revealed that a subject took an item valued at $21.30. On Tuesday, September 23rd at 8:30 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a problem with harassment between juveniles at the Salem Upper Elementary. That investigation revealed two juveniles were continually harassing another juvenile. The report had been hot lined and will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office for further review. That same morning at 10:00, an officer read an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem to a 36-year old Salem male who was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. He remained in custody until a court appearance. On Thursday, September 25th at 10:45 in the morning, an officer read an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem to a 19-year old Rolla male who was incarcerated in the Dent County Jail. There are a number of driving routes through Mark Twain National Forest to enjoy fall color. Fall colors in southern Missouri, where most of 1.5 million acres of Mark Twain National Forest is located, usually in October. Spring and summer weather conditions can impact the variety and the length of time of when fall colors are visible. In the past, fall colors started in northern Missouri and moved south starting mid-September and lasting through early November, depending on weather. From Rolla travel south 8 miles on Highway 63 to the Lane Spring Recreation Area. From Salem, check out the area on Route A between Highway 19 and Bunker. From Houston, travel north on Highway 63 to Licking. Travel west on Highway 32 and cross the Big Piney River heading towards Success and then south on Highway 17 back to Houston. Or travel North from Houston on Highway 63 and head west on Highway 32 to Route N and then Route AF towards the Big Piney River. Enjoy the river bluffs along the Big Piney River at the Slabtown Access.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers game with Union Thursday was postponed due to wet weather and will not be rescheduled. The Lady Tigers will participate in the Rolla Tournament today and tomorrow. Today, Salem will be facing Rolla and Marshfield in pool play today.

The Salem Lady Softball Tigers have been seeded 2nd in the Class 3, District 9 playoffs which gives them a bye in the first round. The Lady Tigers first game will be at 4:30 Thursday afternoon at Sullivan against either Sullivan or St. Clair. The championship game is scheduled for Friday, October 10th at 5:00 at Sullivan.

The Salem Football Tigers will be in Mountain Grove tonight to face the Panthers in SCA Conference play. The Tigers go into the game with a 2-4 record while Mountain Grove is 5-1.

The Salem Lady Volleyball Tigers coming off a two game loss to Rolla Tuesday night, 7-25 and 6-25, will participate in the Licking Tournament on Saturday.

The St. Louis Cardinals will face the Los Angeles Dodgers today in the first game of the NLDS and the first pitch will be at 5:37. Adam Wainwright will face Clayton Kershaw in the opener. The pre-game show begins at 5:02. The second game will start Saturday night at 8:02 on KSMO with the first pitch at 8:37 in Los Angeles.

Mike Moustakas greeted Fernando Salas with a leadoff blast in the 11th inning as the Kansas City Royals edged the LA Angels of Anaheim, 3-2, in the opener of the ALDS. Alcides Escobar and Omar Infante had the other RBI for Kansas City who will face the Angels again tonight in Anaheim.

The Missouri Football Tigers will have this weekend off before facing Georgia next Saturday.

The St. Louis Rams will be in Philadelphia to face the Eagles at noon Sunday while the Kansas City Chiefs will be at San Francisco to face the 49er’s at 3:25. The Rams enter play with a 1-2 record while the Chiefs enter the game with a 2-2 record.

Funeral services for Earlene Mae Steelman of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 2:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Baptist Children’s Home.

Funeral services for Salina Rene-Ann (Hellmer) Young of Salem, age 30, will be held on Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Monday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Young family for funeral expenses.
